Crew
Hello, my name is Crew. My animal id is #215222. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/13/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormCrew is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Crew has not acclimated well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He has displayed handling/touch sensitivity and a concerning level of anxiety and arousal. When in kennel Crew whines, paces, bounces off the kennel walls, and will dodge the lead when attempting to remove him from his kennel for walks or socialization. Crew has escalated to becoming aroused on walks or when off-leash, grabbing at a handler's arms, stomach, and side multiple times during a walk. the handler attempting to separate themself from Crew, he was only able to grab at their clothing. Crew then redirected and attempted to go for their hands. Medically, Crew has been receiving treatment with CIRDC.

Summary:: Crew was brought to the care center by his owner, who had to surrender him because of the owner was experiencing medical issues. Crew has exhibited Fearful behavior in the care center, He has allowed minimal handling due to touch sensitivities, displaying tense body language and lip curling when attempts are made to collar him, which led to an assessment not being completed. Crew also exhibits frustration in his kennel, evidenced by excessive barking and a self-inflicted nose injury from pressing against the kennel door. He also is reluctant to enter his kennel, requiring intervention from staff, and displayed head-whipping and thrashing during the process. Crew's behavior outside of the care center has been challenging. During a walk, he pulled strongly across the street before redirecting his focus onto the handler. Crew grabbed at the handler's arms, stomach, and side multiple times, though he only caught their clothing. Despite attempts to use a stiff-arm technique and avoid his advances, Crew continued to jump and target their hands. The situation required the intervention of two additional handlers to secure him and return him safely to his kennel. Given these behaviors, Crew is not considered a suitable candidate for further assessments at this time.
Summary:: Although Crew was surrendered by their previous owner, there is no information available regarding their interactions with either familiar or unfamiliar dogs. 12/27/24: When off leash at the Care Center Crew is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Crew approaches practicing avoidance as he displacement marks, ears back. After scenting the novel female, Crew loosens up and displays toe taps. The novel female is moved to the back of the pen to make space for Crew to enter. Once in the pen Crew lets out a bark before returning to displacement scenting. The novel female approaches and both Crew and the novel female greet face to face scenting one another. The noel female begins bouncing around the Crew. The novel female is persistent in initiating play although Crew continues to be avoidant. He begins to mirror her behavior bouncing around her before quickly disengaging. Both dogs are separated, When apart the novel female checks in the handler. Crew rushes over in an attempt to scent her genitals. When she turns around they bounce around one another again. Crew returns to displacing. Due to the Crew's discomfort and being conflicted interaction was ended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling- Crew is reported in the prior home that he Will have accidents a few times a week in the home. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Basic manners/poor impulse control- Reported to jump on people and staff. It is also reported that he will react to strangers that approach owner/family, children, and moving objects by trying to jump on them. To address Crew's basic manners and poor impulse control, start by teaching him to sit and stay on command, rewarding him with treats and praise only when he remains calm and seated. Use a consistent command like "off" to discourage jumping, and turn away or ignore him until he settles down. Practice impulse control exercises, such as waiting for a treat or toy until given permission, to help him learn patience. Reinforce good behavior with positive reinforcement, and redirect his attention to appropriate activities when he becomes too excited. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- In his previous home, it was reported that he would lunge if restrained. When attempting to collar him, he displayed wide, dilated eyes, a tense body, and a curled lip. He is also known to thrash when being put back into his kennel. To address his handling and touch sensitivity, as well as his fearfulness and potential for defensive aggression, start by creating a calm and predictable environment. Use desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques to gradually get him comfortable with handling. Begin with gentle, non-threatening touches, rewarding him with high-value treats for calm behavior. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of handling as he becomes more comfortable. Practice collaring exercises by associating the collar with positive experiences, such as treats and praise, without initially putting it on. Slowly progress to touching him with the collar and eventually putting it on, always rewarding calm behavior. Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key to building his trust and reducing his anxiety. Regularly monitor his progress and adjust the training plan as needed to ensure his comfort and safety. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety- Crew began to display heavy panting and vocalizing in kennel. Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety.
