Madara
Hello, my name is Madara. My animal id is #213753. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/2/2024.
Madara is at risk due to behavior concerns. Madara arrived at the care center as a stray. Police reported that Madara was anxious, growling and barking when he was found. Upon intake Madara, hard barked, stared and bared teeth at staff. In the care center, Madara continues to display fearful defensive behaviors through whale eyeing, growling and baring teeth at staff. Madara allows to be leashed when offered wet food but remains hypervigilant on his walks. Medically, Madara was treated at intake for an ear infection but is otherwise healthy.

Quickly escalating to growling, baring teeth, and snapping towards handlers and the leash. Madara has allowed minimal handling during his stay. He has been observed to be receptive to high value treats. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend a home with no children.

Summary:: Madara has shown improvement with select handlers at the care center over time. While a handling assessment was completed and Madara has shown the potential to do well with certain people, the below handling assessment is not a sole indicator of the behaviors they will display once they leave the care center as this assessment was done by a handler who has spent large amounts of time with Madara over the course of their stay. Based on Madara's history and their behavior at the care center, we recommend giving them ample time to decompress in a new home, always using a slow approach, and positive reinforcement when introducing them to new and unfamiliar situations and people. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is also advised for guidance to safely manage and modify any behavior they may present with outside of the care center. Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Moderate Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: N/a- Did not see any Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Highly social Call over: Approaches readily Sociability comments: Receptive to treats Soft handling: Seeks contact Exuberant handling: Accepts contact Comments: Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler readily Knock Knock comments: No approach Toy Toy comments: Grips light moves away with neutral body
Summary:: 11/12/24: Madara greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and hackles raised. Once off leash, he continues to soften and engages in play, slapping the other dog at times. 11/19/24: Madara is soft bodied with wagging tail when greeting other dogs off leash. He will solicit play by slapping the other dog with his paws.
Summary (6):: 11/15/24: Madara is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and is brought to the street for his walk. While outside Madara walks alongside handler and checks in with handler occasionally, he accepts treats from handler softly. He walks past people on the street without issue and uses the bathroom while outside. When Madara spots a dog walking down the street towards them, handler and Madara move to the side. Handler then asks Madara to sit and uses treats to remain focused on them as the other dog passes by. Madara remains generally focused but looks at the dog as they pass, refocusing when called by handler. They continue to walk for a while more before being brought back to kennel, Madara baulks briefly before being coaxed into kennel without further issue. 11/14/24: Madara is at the front of the kennel laying down when handler approaches. He readily approaches the front when the leash is presented. Madara pulls mildly to the play yard where he is put on a dragline. Madara is tense with the handler and does not respond to treats or squeaky sounds. When seeing another dog Marada growls lightly, he is not able to be redirectly easily. When returning to kennel Madara pauses in front of the kennel and has to be muscled into kennel.
Summary (7):: 11/12/24: Madara is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. As the door is opened, he begins to wag his tail low and rapidly. He is leashed without a lure and brought out to the pens. Initially when doing a gate greet, his hackles from his withers to the base of his tail are all raised, but once in the pen, he was very loose, wiggly, and bouncy. He continuously attempted to exuberantly jump on / push off second handler in pen when not engaged with the other dog. He was easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 11/7/24: Madara is laying down in the back of kennel as handler approaches. He approaches slowly and with a low head as handler offers wet food through kennel bars. Handler utilizes wet food as a lure and is able to leash him. Handler takes Madara outside to the street for a walk. His body becomes slightly more soft, his tail is untucked, more so relaxed and low. He pulls on his walk and relieves himself. When handler reaches the end of the street and begins to turn around, Madara leans away from handler, lowers his body, and whale eyes up at handler. Handler aborts return and walks a couple steps further and attempts to turn around again. Madara displays the same behavior and begins to walk backwards whilst pulling on the leash. Handler decides to cross the street and attempt and walk back to care centers, and with some light coaxing, Madara began walking back. He was returned to kennel without further issue. 11/6/24: Madara is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is tense and his ears are low, so handler offers wet food as a distraction. He licks the food through the kennel bars and takes from handlers hand before being leashed and brought out to the yard. Once outside in the yard Madara remains slightly tense and tucks his tail while walking around the yard. He is hyper vigilant and will attempt to baulk if there is a dog in a play yard he has to pass. Handler brings him to the back of the play yard far from the other dogs to allow Madara to decompress but as more dogs begin to enter the yard, handler decides to walk him in the driveway where it is more quiet for him. Once out in the driveway Madara sniffs around for a while and stares at passing dogs being walked into the street. He walks around for a while more before being brought back and returned to kennel without issue. 11/4/24: Madara is laying at the front of the kennel when handler approaches. Madara begins to loudly growl when spotting the handler. Handler kneels down and speaks in a soft tone. Madara shows whale eye and continues to growl. Madara is receptive to canned wet food and takes it softly from the handler. When the handler presents the leash Madara begins to growl again. When attempting to leash Madara moves to the back of the kennel. When the handler attempts to lasso Madara he bares his teeth towards handlers. Interaction is ended to lower FAS.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Madara so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to growling, baring teeth and snapping we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Madara has been observed to jump up on familiar handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Madara has been observed to be highly fearful during his stay in the care center. He has been noted to growl, bare teeth and snap towards handlers. When handlers have attempted to handle him, Madara has been noted to snap at the leash. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Madara to new and unfamiliar situations. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Madara has been observed to become tense and growl when seeing another dog on leash. He will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
