Animal Profile

Big Bubba

Hello, my name is Big Bubba. My animal id is #244296. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 6 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/23/2025.

Big Bubba is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Big Bubba has been social with handlers in care after warming up, enjoys splashing in the pool, and playing with toys. Despite this, he has been displaying high levels of kennel stress, despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He screeches and barks at other dogs when they pass his kennel, persistently jumping to the top of his kennel, causing him to hit his head, and crashing into his water bowl. Attempts to reduce visual stressors by covering his kennel have been attempted, but he tears them down. Medically, Big Bubba has alopecia.

Attempts to reduce visual stressors by covering his kennel have been attempted, but he tears them down. Medically, Big Bubba has alopecia. Meet Big Bubba! Big Bubba arrived as a stray on 12/30/25, and while his past is unknown, he's been steadily showing staff what a gentle, thoughtful boy he is as he recovered from some prior injuries. He's grateful for care, moves at his own pace, and is now hoping to find a calm forever home where he can truly settle in. Personality Big Bubba is a soft, polite boy who tends to keep a neutral, calm presence in the room. He often stays close to his handlers, sitting beside them and choosing quiet companionship over chaos. When he's comfortable, he gently accepts treats and offers sweet, subtle affection like lip licks and staying nearby. Craves affection, leans into your legs for pets, and stretches his neck out for throat scratches. Absolutely loves the water! He happily hops into plastic pools to splash and play around. Rolls around on his back in the grass like a "funny little sea creature" when he is happy. Loves chasing tossed toys and will shred them with "utter glee" once he catches them. Out and About Big Bubba walks with a loose leash and generally explores at an easy, unhurried pace. He is more focused on sniffing and taking in his surroundings than reacting to distractions, making him a steady walking companion in calm environments. Social Behavior Big Bubba is neutral to social in new spaces and tends to stay near his people once he feels settled. He sits calmly for treats and accepts gentle handling, though he can be sensitive in certain areas, especially where he has had previous injuries. Home Life Big Bubba will do best in an adult only home that can respect his need for space, patience, and gentle handling. He's not a pushy dog and thrives when allowed to approach on his own terms and adjust at his own pace. Things to Know Big Bubba is recovering from prior wounds and has some sensitivity around handling, so a calm, understanding home is important for his continued healing and confidence building. He also benefits from slow introductions and a predictable environment. Fun Fact Big Bubba may be a quiet observer at first, but once he decides you're his person, he'll quietly choose your side and stick with you like a loyal little shadow.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Big Bubba fearfulness/ handling sensitivity, we recommend he be placed in a home with No children (under 13). Recommend no dog parks: Due to Big Bubba's behavior in the playgroup and in the kennel, we recommend for him to not attend dog parks

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Medical noted wound on body and when touch his skin will ripple and display lip licking behavior. These signs indicate discomfort and stress during handling, requiring a slow, gentle approach and desensitization to touch. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During intake he was wheeled to medical and he growled when being vaccinated. The vet tech opened the crate door for him to walk in on his own, but he refused to, still whining and cowering down. He began growling as he was being tilted into the kennel and would continue to growl, snarl, and bark while being encouraged to come out. These behaviors suggest high fear and potential for defensive aggression when pressured, requiring low-stress handling techniques, confidence-building exercises, and positive reinforcement for voluntary movement. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
