Luna

Hello, my name is Luna. My animal id is #243395. I am a female blue dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Luna is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Luna has shown a high level of fearfulness and frequently refuses to walk and pulling back toward the building, requiring assistance from multiple staff. She has also displayed kennel-based stress behaviors, including slamming her kennel door and water bowls, jumping, hypersalivation, and soiling her kennel. Medically, Luna is apparently healthy.

A volunteer writes: Luna is a big shy girl with a tough exterior. As they say, don't judge a book by its cover; though Luna looks intimidating, she's just a big baby at heart. And when I look into her big, dark eyes, I just melt. Luna walks nicely by my side, glancing up occasionally to check in with me. She loves treats and is highly food motivated. She's been quiet and gentle and in her short time in the shelter has really grown on me. Luna was surrendered with her housemate, Ace #243396 , when her owner no longer had time to care for three dogs (one dog was not surrendered). She spent most of her time outdoors. She's noted to be friendly with familiar dogs but hasn't spent time around dogs she doesn't know. She barks at small animals. She's been tolerant around children, though due to some fearfulness and touch sensitivity, she's recommended to an adult home. Luna is described as an independent girl who needs time to adjust to new things but once she's familiar, she is very tolerant. Luna is currently available to foster through rescue.

No cats: we recommend Luna be placed in a home without small animals due to her growling/barkling at squirrels and birds. Place with a New Hope partner: Luna came into the care center as an owner surrender due not having the time and resources to care for luna and another dog in the home.In the prior home Luna is noted to be independent shy girl that needs time to adjust to new people and new things. Once she is familiar with you, she is tolerant. In the care center Luna is hesitant to be leashed and will retreat when handlers approach. In the behavior room, she maintained a tense body posture, avoided interaction, and backed away from touch.Luna will require a slow-moving, patient placement that can provide continued confidence-building and gentle handling in a low-stress environment. Luna is available for rescue through one of out new hope partners.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior: Luna has tendencies to be destructive with things left out like shoes and household items. This indicates a need for environmental management and enrichment strategies to redirect her energy toward appropriate outlets, such as chew toys and structured activities. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Fearful/Handling/touch sensitivity: During Luna medical exam it is noted that she does not like being touched around ears, calm, likes snacks, gentle, nervous, but no growling or signs of aggression. In the prior home it is noted she is also fearful when being groomed. she is noted to be nervous around new people and needs time to warm up.These observations suggest that Luna would benefit from gradual desensitization to handling and grooming, paired with positive reinforcement to build trust and confidence. Please see the handout on the decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Luna will sometimes growl/bark at strangers on walks and at small animals like. This behavior indicates a need for focused training on leash manners and impulse control, using counter-conditioning and desensitization techniques to reduce reactivity and improve her ability to remain calm in stimulating environments. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
