This behavior was not easily redirected, and multiple handlers were needed to place him into a kennel. Medically, Victor has unspecified dermatitis. While in care,Victor did well receiving medical treatment for his dermatitis. He repeated the leash biting behavior once treatment was complete.

Victor arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During intake Victor was observed to jump up high and bite the leash, almost catching the handler's hand. This behavior was not easily redirected, and multiple handlers were needed to place him into kennel. While in care, Victor was removed from kennel for medical treatment. He allowed handling was noted to bite the leash. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult-only home.

Summary:: During intake, Victor was observed to be highly rope reactive. Noted to jump up high and bite the leash. This behavior was not easily redirected. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety, Victor is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 9/21/26: VS was able to double leash Victor without issue and bring him into the pharmacy for treatments. Victor’s tail was wagging and had a very relaxed and wiggly body. He allowed VS to apply duoxo mousse throughout his entire body. Towards the end when he was waiting for his kennel to be ready, he bit the leash once but was easily redirected with treats. He was returned to his kennel without issue. 9/19/26: K9 Behavior is called to assist with Victor's intake as he is reported to intensely leash bite near the admission counselor's hand without disengaging. As the first hand approaches, Victor is biting and tugging, as well as jumping higher on the leash while on the street. The handler uses a pet corrector, and Victor stops, but he looks up either at the leash or the counselor with whale eyes. The K9 handler then lassos Victor, and both people walk him into the drive. As he moves around, the leashes on him become tangled; Victor leash bites again on all three leashes (note that he originally came in with a bungee cord leash, and as he leash bit, the counselor place their regular slip leash on him to walk him in). The 2nd K9 handler approaches; the 1st handler feeds the 2nd's leash through and places it on Victor. After the leash is placed, Victor begins to growl, even as he still holds on to the other leashes; the first handler tosses treats onto Victor, and he stops leash biting. Both handlers quickly walk Victor to his kennel; Victor doesn't leash bite anymore. Both handler muscle him into his kennel and close the door. As all 4 leashes on him are very tangled, the 1st handler uses a hook to remove them. Once the 3 slip leads are off him, another pair of K9 handlers close the kennel door, cut the available length of the bungee cord, and remove the rest of the leash with a hook.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Victor so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash.
