At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Nami is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Reserved

Eden

Eden is at risk due to behavior concerns. Eden arrived at the care centers as a stray with no previous known history. During her intake she displayed social behavior, had a relaxed body and allowed all handling. Throughout her stay she has remained friendly with handlers, regularly accepting pets and treats. Eden has been observed to be very on leash reactive towards bikes, scooters, skateboards, dogs, and cats. She will intensely kennel fight as she is removed from the room, as well as, as she is walked past the pop up crates and cat kennels. Eden will lunge, hard bark, and become both fixated and tense when spotting any of the above mentioned. Over time she has become harder to redirect. Recently she has started to hump handlers, is unable to be redirected, and it escalates to leash biting. Medically, she is healthy at this time.

Marine

Marine is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Harrison

Harrison is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially Harrison was been showing fearful behaviors such as head whipping during handling, tense body, tucked tail during walks. Recently he is observed to be highly reactive to dogs in pop up crates and redirects to charging at handlers, he has also been noted to lunge at other staff members while outside on leash. With familiar staff, Harrison has been social allowing light touching and petting. Medically Harrison is healthy.

Shadow Puppet

Shadow Puppet is at risk do to behavioral reasons. Shadow puppet has been highly fearful, baulking and refusing to walk on street. Recently Shadow puppet has been showing deterioration during his stay at the Care Center. Shadow Puppet has been persistently barking, jumping in his kennel, biting his kennel door lock, and has been covering himself in his own feces. Shadow puppet has been noted to be social with volunteers and staff. Medically, Shadow Puppet is healthy.

Super Girl

Super Girl is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. Super Girl has made it difficult for handlers to put her back into her kennel due to her leash biting, and has not been consistently redirected with treats or toys. On at least one occasion, staff had to use a tool or pet corrector to retrieve the leash.She has also exhibited food guarding behavior, observed growling and hovering over her food tray when approached. While Super Girl has moments of social behavior, she can quickly become overstimulated or disengaged with enrichment activities. Medically, Super Girl has CIRDC.

Waffles

Waffles is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. She has exhibited signs of kennel stress and deterioration, including breaking the bars of her kennel door. When relocated to a new kennel, she was seen chewing on the metal siding of the door. Waffles recently ripped that panel out of the wall of her kennel. Despite these concerns, Waffles displays a loose, wiggly body and actively participates in training exercises. Medically waffles has recurrent CIRDC.

Teflon

Teflon is at risk due to behavior concerns in care. Teflon has made it difficult for handler to walk him due to his dog reactivity and kennel fighting when. He displays hard bark, leash biting, jumping, and pawing at the kennel door, and has been observed to screech and lunge at neighboring dogs. Teflon pulls hard on leash, exhibits leash reactivity, and has demonstrated difficulty settling during handling and enrichment sessions. Medically Teflon is Apparently Healthy.

Landen

Landen is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Landen has began to deteriorate in the care center, and has began to grab random items on the street on walks, and grab onto equipment such as a hose when being removed from kennel, making it difficult to get him to drop these items. Landen is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Landen has presumed CIRDC.

Dig Dug

Dig Dug is at risk due to behavior concerns. Both during intake and throughout his stay he has remained social and friendly with handlers. Dig Dug is observed to be highly food motivated and is able to be redirected easily for the most past. Dig Dug is highly engaged and receptive during training sessions. However, he has been noted to display a low threshold for arousal, quickly becoming very mouthy with handlers and can escalate to intense leash biting. Dig Dug has also been noted to be fearful when out on the street, usually becoming frantic and pulling back very hard back to the care centers.

Chooky

Chooky is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of overstimulation and being uncomfortable with handling as he resorts to nipping or swatting. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Chooky is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. e would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Dipsy

Dispy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Dispy in the care center has been struggling to acclimate despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Dipsy is a bit fearful in the care center with staff, and on walks will hard bark at unfamiliar staff/strangers while pulling towards them making it difficult to walk her safely at times. Dispy has warmed up to some staff members, and is social with them but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Dipsy is apparently healthy.

Moon

Moon is at-risk due to behavioral concerns in the care center. In care Moon frequently jumps on handlers, mouths clothing, and becomes pushy when seeking treats or attention, at times escalating to grabbing at the handler’s pant leg or treat pouch. These behaviors have made it difficult to manage due to his size and strength. Though responsive to cues like “sit” and “down” in structured training sessions, Moon struggles to focus when overstimulated or in high-arousal environments. Medically, Moon is apparently healthy.

Oreo Fudge Brownie

Oreo Fudge Brownie is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. We have assessed that Oreo Fudge Brownie is a geriatric diabetic and have started Oreo Fudge Brownie on a treatment plan. Oreo Fudge Brownie will need daily maintenance with her medical condition and further follow up with outside vet care. Oreo Fudge Brownie has allowed all handling and seeks attention during their exams.

Luna

Luna is at risk for behavior reasons. In her recently adoptive home, Luna was involved in an altercation with the resident dog over resources. This instance was over food resources, however she does guard toys from other dogs as well. This incident did break skin and the other dog needed medical attention. In care, Luna was initially highly fearful. With time she is adjusting well and social with staff. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Poppy

Poppy is at risk due to behavior concerns. Poppy is struggling with kennel stress and arousal behavior in care, including repeated lunging, hard barking, hypersalivation, and pawing at the kennel door. She has been observed to rebound off the kennel glass, bare her teeth, and fixate on handlers in a heightened arousal state. These behaviors are primarily seen when she is in her kennel and appear to be barrier-related. Outside of the kennel, Poppy has shown a more neutral behavior and will calmly on leash, lean into petting, and engage with enrichment. Medically Poppy is apparently healthy.

Diamond Girl

Diamond Girl is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Diamond Girl has not been acclimating well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Diamond Girl has been observed to be highly reactive on leash towards other dogs on walks lunging and hard barking until they are out of sight, and in the hallways while dogs are not present she will vocalize/scream loudly, pulling hard and heavily panting unable to settle on walks. She recently has begun to lrash bite when being removed from her kennel. Diamond Girl is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Diamond Girl has Pyodermatitis.

Aries

Aries is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived with a limited history, his finder states that he is highly dog reactive. They reported Aries will hard bark, growl, lunge, and snap towards other dogs. They also noted him to be friendly and outgoing with both strangers and children. During his intake , he was observed to pant, pace, bark and was lunging towards handlers. Throughout his stay Aries has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to jump towards handlers with an open mouth and will begin to leash bite. In a recent incident, Aries bit a handlers finger with high pressure as the kennel lock was unlocked. Medically, Aries is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Lexington is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, she has persistent URI signs and has not been eating well. She needs care and medical attention that we cannot provide.
