Sirios
Hello, my name is Sirios. My animal id is #256079. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/25/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too fearful.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSirios is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Sirios displays signs of kennel-related stress, including prolonged digging under his kennel door to the point of causing abrasions to his front legs. He has also shown reluctance to return to his kennel, including planting himself, refusing to walk, and attempting to push back out after entering. Sirios is social with handlers, and loves to be around staff, but is struggling to acclimate. Medically, Sirios is apparently healthy.

Sirios is social with handlers, and loves to be around staff, but is struggling to acclimate. Medically, Sirios is apparently healthy. Sirios was surrendered by his previous owner due to his fearfulness of being outside and his fearfulness of strangers. He was kept indoors due to this. His previous family described him as a social, friendly, active, but calm dog with his people. He would spend most of his time in the bedroom portion of the home. When they did attempt to take him for walks, he was noted to pull moderately. During his intake, Sirios was friendly with staff and allowed petting. But when walking him to the kennel, Sirios began thrashing, and a belly band was used by a second handler to assist with getting him into the kennel safely. He has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. Sirios continues to refuse to return to the kennel. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Date of assessment:: 6/28/2026
Summary:: Sirios has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. During his intake, he initially allowed handling, but when walking back to the kennel, he began thrashing and needed two staff members to manage his thrashing. One staff member had to use a belly band to lift him partially for him to be placed into the kennel safely. He did not take treats or show interest in toys when they attempted to redirect him. Since his intake, Sirios continues to be reluctant when returning to the kennel, although he is easy to remove. Due to his behavior, he is unable to complete a handling assessment.
Summary (7):: 7/6/26: Sirios is at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame as the handler approaches his kennel. He is leashed with ease and will pull moderately out of the kennel room and to the behavior office where he will greet and jump onto two handlers that are sitting in chairs. He is removed as he attempts to lick their faces. After a moment, he is placed on a drag leash and will engage with the handler in a game of two toy fetch. He eventually disengages and starts sniffing around the room so the handler offers him water. He drinks it and is then leashed and returned to kennel. He will hesitate at the kennel room entrance so the handler jogs into the room with him. He is guided into kennel and secured safely. 7/5/26: Sirios was reported to be digging under his kennel door for a prolonged period of time. His front legs are starting to bleed from scraping the underside of the kennel door. 06/30/26: Sirios is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He stands up and is leashed with ease. He is brought to the office where he greets other handlers with a loose frame. He sniffs people's shoes more intensely than he sniffs other things. He will also occasionally jump up on the handlers. Sirios will sometimes take treats. When returning to the kennel room, Sirios refuses to walk in through the farther door, planting himself in a sit position and not moving for treats or leash pressure. The handler walks him around the building and enters through SDA, exaggeratedly jogging with him and encouraging Sirios with baby talk. He enters his kennel, then eats treats that the handler tosses in for him. 06/27/26: Sirios is at the front of his kennel laying down as the handler approaches. He stands up and allows the handler to easily leash him. He is brought to the room where he sniffs and explores. Another staff member offers him cheese, which he licks but doesn't actually eat. He doesn't show much interest in treats. Sirios tries to jump up on other staff a few times. When returning to the room, Sirios does not want to go back into his kennel for treats or toys. The handler has to use leash pressure to get him in, and he quickly turns around and attempts to push his head back out.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Sirios is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Sirios has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: According to Sirios's previous owner, he is not house-trained and would wear diapers around the home. Please see handout on house soiling. Handling/touch sensitivity: During his intake, Sirios began thrashing on the leash when being walked back to his kennel. Two handlers were needed to successfully Place him into the kennel with the use of a belly band. Since his intake, Sirios remains reluctant to return to kennel. Please see hadnout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful: Sirios's previous owner reported that he is fearful of strangers and loud noises. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Sirios should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Sirios’s choice to approach a new person or thing. He would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
