Blue Lantern
Hello, my name is Blue Lantern. My animal id is #234943. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 7 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/23/2025.
Blue Lantern is at risk due to behavior concerns. Blue Lantern arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. During is intake and medical exam, Blue Lantern was noted to be social, allowed handling, and easy to leash. Recently, during a handling assessment Blue Lantern was noted to resource guard, taking items in his possession and hovering over them with a tense body. More concerning, is Blue Lantern is showing signs of deterioration in kennel. Blue Lantern has been observed pushing his face against the kennel door, as well as licking and biting the kennel bars; his fur was noted to be wet with his own saliva. With staff Blue Lantern continues to be moderately social outside of kennel. Medically, Blue Lantern is apparently healthy.

Blue Lantern came to ACC as a stray via the 49th Precinct. With his striking good looks and classic Husky personality, he's independent, intelligent, and athletic. In the shelter he's shown moments of playfulness and curiosity, though he can also become tense when guarding toys or when unsure about new situations. Good with Other Pets? Dog history is mixed. He's shown soft greetings in some moments but also growling and tension in others. Slow, structured introductions with other dogs are essential. Cats: unknown. Leash Manners Blue Lantern walks with a light pull once settled, but can baulk when re-entering buildings or elevators. Positive reinforcement and patience will help him build confidence. Overall Health Blue Lantern is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, heartworm negative, and recently cleared from kennel cough. He is otherwise healthy and ready for his forever home. Behavior Determination Level 4 - Adult-only home. Needs ongoing training for impulse control, resource guarding, and confidence-building. Fun Facts Blue Lantern is stunning, clever, and spirited. He enjoys toys (sometimes a little too much!) and has been seen play-bowing and bouncing when in a good mood. With the right guidance, he'll make an incredible companion for someone who understands Huskies and is ready for a rewarding journey.

Summary:: 8/29/25: Blue Lantern greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and soft wagging tail. He then begins to growl at the other dog.
Summary (4):: 10/7/25: Blue Lantern is lying down at the front of his kennel, and as the handler is unlocking the kennel, he stands up with a neutral body. When the handler attempts to leash, Blue Lantern avoids it; he steps to the back of his kennel and paws at the leash when it's near his face. The handler drops a treat in his kennel, and as he eats it, the handler leashes him and then brings him out the kennel. While on the street, Blue Lantern walks ahead of the handler with little tension on the leash; he also shows slight interest in passerby after relieving himself. Blue Lantern adds tension to the leash while crossing the street. While crossing back to walk to the shelter, someone drops a box behind him, which startles him a bit. He is brought into the building and the handler clips their leash with ease. While walking into the room, Blue Lantern looks at the kennels and then stops walking for a brief moment. He then continues to walk and enters his kennel, having the handler remove their leash with ease.
Summary (5):: 10/2/25: While a staff member is interacting with a neighboring dog, Blue Lantern is observed to be licking at the kennel bars. The fur down his neck, chest and both front paws are wet from saliva. 9/30/25: Blue Lantern is lying down in his kennel as the handler approaches. As the leash is shown he would begin to play-bow and constantly dodge the leash. A treat lure is then used and he is then easily leashed and removed from kennel. He would have a mild pull ahead of the handler. He is then taken for a street walk where he would remain aloof throughout the walk, where he would then watch dogs with a neutral body and continue walking ahead. He is then brought in for a re-assessment and as he would enter the room begin to grab toys and hover over them with a tense body. He would then proceed to knock over a box full of kong and grab a large bag of treats. He would grab the bag and retreat under the desk and would then again hover it. A treat is then tossed ahead to distract and grab the bag safely. Shortly after, he is then re-leashed, clipped and returned to kennel with no issue. 9/25/25: Blue Lantern is lying down at the front of his kennel, and stands up with a neutral body as the handler unlocks the door. When the handler attempts to leash him, he play bows and backs away. The handler eventually leashes him and brings him out the kennel. While walking out the room, Blue Lantern slightly fixates on the dogs in kennel for a brief time. Before going to the street ,another handler and dog are ahead, but Blue does not react to the dog. During the street walk, Blue walks ahead of the handler with little tension on the leash, adding more tension when approaching a busier street. When walking back to shelter, Blue pulls towards two separate passersby. The handler pulls him away and shortens the leash. The handler clips their leash. When returning to kennel, Blue attempts to pull towards the kennels and then enters his kennel with ease
Summary (6):: 9/16/25: Blue Lantern was observed in his kennel, picking up his linen and shoving it into his water bucket. Then he pulled out the linen and shoved the linen around on the kennel floor, whining a few time as he proceeded with this behavior. After a minute, he paused and stood there for a few seconds before proceeding to pick it up again and repeating the behavior of shoving the linen into the bucket and pulling out. 09/12/25: It is reported by staff that Blue Lantern will press his face against the kennel door and lick/bite the kennel bars. 9/6/25: Blue Lantern is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and walks out of the kennel. Blue Lantern pulls towards a red bucket of toys. Handler walks him away and tosses a toy to him. He picks up the toy and he brings it to the elevator. He is then taken to the driveway where he walks ahead of the handler pulling mildly. Handler removes his harness in the driveway without issue before being brought to the street. On the street, he continues to pull mildly ahead of the handler. He fixates on a small dog across the street and pulls hard forward standing on his hind legs. He is kept away and returns to walking ahead of the handler with mild pulling. He relieves himself and is walked back to shelter. Handler enters the elevator with Blue Lantern. He goes to play with a toy in the elevator and stops and walks in a circle. Handler pre-clips him and a few moments after Blue Lantern goes to sniff the wet floor sign. Handler shifts their leash in their hand. Blue Lantern then snaps towards the handlers hand. Handler extends their arm. Blue Lantern stands nearby the handler and barks towards the handler. Handler straight arms Blue Lantern and walks him to the kennel. Blue Lantern is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 8/27/25: Blue Lantern is standing at the front of his kennel and is easily leashed without issue. He is walked on the street where he is aloof, walking slightly ahead of handler not checking in or responsive to handler calling or tossing treats. When he see's another dog he will stare in their direction until out of sight. Sometimes he is responsive to the squeaker sound. When returning back to the shelter, he becomes darty, pulling to random spots to sniff. Handler is able to navigate him to another entrance. In the building he continues to zig zag back and forth. He is soft bodied in the behavior room and is collared using treats as a distraction. After the assessment, Blue Lantern is in possession of a toy and he settles onto the couch with it. He will not move away from the toy for treats or coaxing. Another handler tosses another toy and he comes off the couch. Handler grabs hold of the leash and is able to clip it and return him to kennel without issue. 8/25/25- Blue Lantern is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, when handler goes to leash he dodges it. Handler has to lean further into kennel and he come forward, he is leashed. He is taken for a street walk, he pulls hard at first sniffing around then has a mild pull. Handler offers treats but he shows no interest. He has no reaction to any stimuli. When returning to the building Blue Lantern plants, handler tries treats but he again shows no interest. Handler applied pressure to his leash and he moves into the driveway. When they try to enter the small garage, Blue starts to baulk and won't go forwad. Handler resets in the driveway then runs inside. Blue plants and won't budge once he is by the elevator. Handler calls another handler for assistance. When they try to put a sling on him he lowers bod to the ground and does a couple of head flips towards handler in the rear. Other handler tugs him away and he slightly stands up, other handler is able to sling him. He is plants hard throughout returning him and side eyes rear handler. He goes into kennel without issue.
Date of intake:: 8/23/2025
Summary:: Jumped up on handlers, allowed petting
Date of initial:: 8/25/2025
Summary:: Social; relaxed body, reluctant to reenter kennel
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Blue Lantern so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 9/6/25: While in an enclosed space (an elevator) with a staff member, Blue Lantern was briefly playing with is toy. He dropped the toy, focused on the staff member before barking then becoming tense and moving forward. The staff member straight arm him for their safety. Once out the elevator, Blue Lantern was fine.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding and fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Blue Lantern has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Blue Lantern should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Blue Lantern has been observed to become tense and hover over a toy in his possession. When handlers attempt to coax him away from the toy he is reluctant to move away and continues to hover over the toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Blue's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: During intake Blue was observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Blue has been observed to baulk on leash. When a handler attempts to use a sling he head whips towards them. One instance when a handler adjusted the leash Blue snapped at their hand. It is important to move slowly with Blue, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
