Animal Profile

Tigger

Hello, my name is Tigger. My animal id is #235639. I am a male orange tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/31/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Tigger is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Tigger is healthy.

Medically Tigger is healthy. A volunteer writes: No one stretches quite like Tigger. With his little back feet up on the wall and his head in my hands, he leaned back to snuggle and knead his paws. Fully enjoying the chance to do his stretch routine for an audience, Tigger relaxed into this opportunity like he'd been waiting all day to do just this but maybe Tigger's been waiting a little longer than that. Tigger was found abandoned in a building lobby with a note tied to his carrier. Someone loved him once and someone will again. He was brought to us by the police and settling into shelter life hasn't been the smoothest ride. As Tigger lounged, he casually held onto a pipecleaner feather with his little paw and continued to snuggle to his heart's content. Tigger always looks like he's about to say something, and I'm sure there's so much he wants to tell us, but at the top of that list is a chance to meet you.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

KNOWN HISTORY:: Tigger was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. While being transferred from his soft carrier by the police he got out. When the officer tried to catch him he scratched them. Unsure where he scratched, it did break skin and draw blood

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/11/25 FB61 Tigger was in his cat as I approached, completely hidden from View. Tigger came out immediately when offered tuna purée and he exited his den with a high tail and ears forward. I did not attempt petting at this time due to his new hope only determination, however, he played with his toy for the duration of time I’m in the room. When he is done playing his body and face is soft and he begins grooming. 9/15/25 FB79 Laying out at the front of his kennel, Tigger has a very loose tail, neutral almond eyes and his ears forward as he rolls around playing with his mouse toy. He chirps when i approach and slow blinks as i speak while continuing to roll around and display his belly. When i open the kennel door he perches up and lowers his head for pets which he accepts and leans into for more when given cheek rubs with the tool. Tiggers eyes dilate when pet down his back a few times but he remains still and tolerant while starting to purr. 9/19/25 FB61 Tigger enjoyed the cat pole toy, while bouncing around his kennel playfully. Tigger rubbed against the kennel door and engaged with the catnip toy offered. Tigger appears very social and will roll around and raise his tail when you speak to him, however, when you open the kennel door and attempt petting, Tigger tenses backs away and raises his paw in warning immediately. Tigger is curious, but appears to be very afraid of hands at this time. Tigger can benefit from play therapy and he is food motivated. The behavior team is not sure if these behaviors are shelter specific at this time. 9/20/25 FB79 Tigger is at the front of his kennel and is very handsome. He slow blinks and chirps when spoken to softly and falls onto his side with a neutral/relaxed body when the kennel door is open and he allows pets on his head. He tail starts to quickly sway back-and-forth as he is pet down his back, but he remains tolerant with no other reaction. When treats are tossed inside for him, he quickly starts to enjoy while still laying on his side. 9/23/25 FB61 Tigger was rolling around in front of his kennel as I approached, ears forward and body relaxed. Tigger vocalized when spoken to and he tensed and flinched when I opened the kennel door. today I spent the session clicking and rewarding when Tigger remains calm in my presence. Tigger will raise his paw in warning when hands-on interaction is initiated and he will also explore with his paws, that is why today I focused on rewarding Tigger when he displays calm behaviors upon approach. -GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to the fearful behaviors displayed in shelter.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of his den, Tigger has wide dilated eyes, forward ears and his tail swaying when the den cover is lifted for a better view; he immediately starts to stress meow and has no reaction when the assessor speaks to him softly or slow blink. When the assessor introduced the assess-a-hand Tiggers tail starts to thump faster as his stress meows got louder, and he backs himself into the corner of the den. Tigger hisses harshly when the tool is slowly brought in and when pet down his back, he snapped his head while growling and grumbling with his paw now lifted. Tiggers back furr starts to ripple as he attempts to bite the tool and it continues to be moved down and around his body. He turns and briefly bites and releases the tool- when the tool was being removed from the den he quickly exited with a low body and tail retreating to the top part of his kennel where he sat with his wide eyes watching the assessor for any movement. Tigger is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch / bite / is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
