Navy Blue was brought into care due to the owner having inadequate time to care for him. He was reported to be friendly and outgoing with strangers and dogs. In the care center, Navy Blue has demonstrated a low threshold for arousal, jumping up and mouthing at handlers and leash biting while being returned to kennel, unwilling to trade. He was reported by the prior owners to growl when approached while eating. As a result, we recommend he be placed in an experienced foster or adopter home through one of our New Hope partners. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I am playful and cute! A volunteer writes: How sweet it'd be to be loved by Navy Blue! 71lb, 2 year old Blue caught my eye right away. That huge brown head and wide "smile" - irresistible! Blue has been with us once before, in spring of 2023 and was quickly reclaimed. Unfortunately he's back due to lack of time to care for him. In his previous life Blue lived with kids, another dog, and a cat and reportedly did well with all. He's been wiggly and soft meeting dogs at the shelter, and even walked away from a dog who remained aloof to him. Navy Blue is at Queens ACC.

My medical notes are...

Noted to be tolerant, friendly, outgoing, and playful with the Large Mixed Breed he lived with, his mother. 1/6/25 Navy Blue is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Navy Blue will greet the novel male dog at the gate exuberantly, offering bounces with a loose frame. Navy Blue will remain self-present, pacing back and forth as the novel male dog remains aloof, ignoring Navy. Navy Blue will walk away on his own and explore, soliciting attention from handlers present. Navy Blue is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 1/5/25 Navy Blue is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Navy Blue greets the novel female dog with a soft, wiggly body. He will run away from the gate where the interaction is conducted and return, maintaining his soft and wiggly body. Navy Blue remains self-present, soliciting attention from handlers present. Navy Blue is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. MACC 23' 3/12/23: Navy Blue greets a dog at the gate with a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail.

Summary (6):: 01/16/25 (Trainer Note): Navy Blue is standing at the front of the kennel panting with dilated pupils as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls hard to the canine training room. Navy allows the handler to attach a drag leash and moves rapidly around the room. He is able to engage in the enrichment items and begins to offer intermittent orienting. Handler reinforces for pausing and taking a deep breath. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately back to kennel. Once in kennel, Navy Blue grabs the rope, yanking repeatedly. Handler throws treats in an attempt to get him to trade and he does not respond. Handler drops the leash and Navy Blue pulls it into kennel, standing over it. Handler is able to throw treats to move him to the corner of the kennel, however each time the handler catches the leash with a hook and begins to move it, Navy rushes over and grabs the leash, pulling it back deeper into kennel. He will stand over the rope until the handler throws treats again. Handler eventually is able to successfully remove the leash before Navy can reach and walks away.

Summary (7):: 01/15/25 Reported to grab leash into kennel with staff member. Two handlers must retrieve leash with hook. Navy Blue is in kennel, loose, wiggly, hovering over leash. One handler uses toy to distract him while the other uses hook to retrieve the leash. Once the handler with the hook grabs the leash, Navy will attempt to do the same, however, the other handler will toss a toy into Navy's kennel, distracting him. He will engage with the toy and ignore the leash as it is pulled out of kennel. 1/8/25: Navy Blue is loose and wiggly at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the behavior room for a gate greet (see dog-dog for details). In the room, he is loose and social with the handlers, sitting, taking treats, and playing with a toy while waiting for the other dog to arrive. After his session, Navy Blue is easily leashed and returned to his kennel with no issues. 1/6/25: Navy Blue's behavior remains the same. 1/5/25: Navy Blue was climbing on kennel door as handler leashed him. He walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Navy Blue was social with handlers and maintained a loose frame throughout interaction. Handlers noticed Navy's unusual gait as he hopped around the yard. He would hold a sit on cue for a treat. Navy pulled towards another dog passing at close distance on the sidewalk. He was returned to kennel with ease. 01/04/25: Navy Blue is lying in the back of his kennel and will quickly run to the front upon the handler’s arrival. When the handler opens the door to leash him, he will attempt to push his way out headfirst. The handler is able to properly leash him, and Navy Blue is brought to the assessment room. Once in the room, he is collared, drag-leashed, and allowed to roam freely. During the session, Navy Blue displays signs of anxiousness, frequently seeking an exit and running to the door whenever the handler moves in that direction. After the session, Navy Blue is safely leashed and escorted back to his kennel without any issues. Previous stay at ACC: 3/12/23: Navy Blue is jumping up at the front of the kennel. When the kennel is cracked open, he attempts to bolt out. Handler tries to get the leash on him and he paws and scratches the handler's hand in a frenzy to push out of the kennel. He is not interested in treats. After a few attempts, he is able to be successfully leashed and taken out for a walk. He jumps up on the handler with a loose body and seeks contact, allowing all petting. Navy Blue pulls hard on the leash and explores his surroundings. When he sees a dog, he pulls hard towards the dog with a loose, wiggly body. Going back to the kennel, he is reluctant to go in but is able to be coaxed into kennel.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Navy Blue is reported in the prior home to sometimes growl if approached while eating food/treats.To address Navy Blue's resource guarding behavior, start by creating a positive association with people approaching while he eats. Begin by standing at a distance where he feels comfortable and gradually move closer over time. Toss high-value treats near him while he eats to show that your presence means good things. Avoid taking his food away or disturbing him while he's eating. Consistently reward calm behavior and use a calm, reassuring tone. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Navy Blue is reported to jump up in a social manner. To help Navy Blue with his jumping behavior, focus on teaching him alternative, more appropriate ways to greet people. Start by ignoring him when he jumps up and only give attention when all four paws are on the ground. Reward him with treats and praise for calm behavior. Teach him cues like "sit" or "off" and consistently reinforce it during greetings. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Navy Blue is reported to be mouthy during his last stay at the care center, applying light pressure. To address Navy Blue's mouthiness and improve his bite inhibition, start by redirecting his mouthing behavior to appropriate chew toys whenever he begins to mouth on people. If he applies pressure, immediately stop interaction and ignore him for a brief period to show that mouthing ends playtime. Reward him with treats and praise when he interacts gently. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: Navy Blue is reported in his prior stay at the care center becoming anxious at the care center, screaming when left in his kennel. He also showed anxiety when a person walked out of the room during his assessment, barking and whining. To help Navy Blue with his anxiety, start by creating a calm and secure environment for him. Gradually desensitize him to being alone by practicing short separations and slowly increasing the duration over time. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling- Navy Blue is noted to pull hard on the leash. To address Navy Blue's leash pulling, start by using a no-pull harness to give you better control. Practice loose-leash walking by stopping whenever he pulls and only moving forward when the leash is slack. Reward him with treats and praise for walking calmly beside you. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Leash biting/ low threshold for arousal: Navy Blue has demonstrated a low threshold for arousal, jumping up and mouthing at handlers and leash biting significantly while being returned to kennel. Please see handout for arousal.
