Cameron
Hello, my name is Cameron. My animal id is #222670. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 3/19/2025.
Cameron is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Cameron is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while he hisses he shows no aggressive behaviors, he appears wary of human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Cameron was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/23/25 Vol. Cameron was in his den. When I lifted the cover, he hissed. He would not take the treats which were offered to him. He hissed a few times before calming down. He remained curled up in his den for the entire interaction. I attempted to pet him with a pipe cleaner, but he hissed and grumbled, so I left him alone. 3/27/25 FB58 In his den and hidden from view - He hisses multiple times when the cover is removed. I place some squeeze up down in the den as he watches with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. I leave the den cover against the front so he feels covered and step back waiting for him to eat it. When he moves forward to eat I click to mark it and repeat - each time I place the squeeze up down he hisses but then steps forward. 03/29/25 FB58 Curled up in his den and hisses each time he sees me. I place Squeeze up and dry treats in his empty tray and place it just outside the den but he will not come out. I move the tray into the den and he hisses at me again, I leave it and walk away. When I check later, he has eaten it all. 04/02/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. He does not come out when offered treats or some scent enrichment and I do not push hands-on interaction and this time to reduce stress. I Speak to him softly for a few moments and end the session. Hopefully he explores the offerings later when the room is empty. 4/6/25 Fb58 In his den and hidden from view, he hisses when the cage door is opened and when the den cover is lifted. I offer squeeze up and he stays pressed against the back until I replace the den cover and he moves forward slightly to sniff. I close the door and leave him to eat on his own. 04/07/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. He does not respond when spoken to and he begins hissing as I open the kennel door and raise his den cover. He squints his eyes and hisses as I leave him some treats and he leans away while continuing to hiss when offered a catnip toy. Nervous boy - not interested in interaction at this time. 4/16/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, huddled and hissing with his face tense and feet and tail tucked beneath his body. I carry him to the free roam room and he remains in his den, sniffing the air curiously with his ears shifting forward and face softening slightly when a cat comes to peer at him through his den. Hopefully being in this room will help him acclimate to the shelter a bit easier.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Kitten socialization,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Cameron came from a home with about 18+ other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Cameron would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 3/22/25 On approach, Cameron is in his den with his face visible through the portal opening. He tenses and hisses when the cage door is opened and he sees the assessor and cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is lifted, he hisses again as well as when the scratcher tool is slowly introduced. He sniffs the tool and is tense and frozen at the back of the den with his tail wrapped tightly around his feet. He is tolerant of touch with the tool along his head and body but continues to hiss periodically. Pick up is not attempted. 4/22/25 Upon re-eval, Cameron is in the free-roam room and sitting in his box under the larger hide with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. When the assessor slowly offers the scratcher tool out to him, he hisses and while tolerant of being touched along his head and body with the tool, he remains tense and frozen throughout. Pick up is not attempted. Cameron is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age.
