Animal Profile

Famous

Hello, my name is Famous. My animal id is #235623. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 8 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 11/20/2025.

Famous is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Famous has shown high arousal and reactivity in the care center, including intense dog reactivity when leaving his kennel and on walks, uncontrollable zoomies, and repeatedly jumping onto staff. He has attempted to redirect during reactive moments, whipping around and nipping at handlers’ clothing. In sessions he displays dilated pupils, heavy panting, difficulty settling, and engages in mounting, jumping, and mouthing staff with moderate to hard pressure. Medically, Famous is being monitored for a scrotal hematoma currently but is otherwise healthy.

I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Summary:: According to Famous previous owner(s), Famous lived with a Small mixed breed dog for the last 3 months, and he was friendly, outgoing, and tolerant towards him and also with other dogs on and off leash. 10/23/25 Famous is introduced at the gate to an unfamiliar female dog. Famous will approach the gate with a stiff body, square posture while displaying a hard face. He begins to hard bark, running to and from the gate in an exaggerated manner. He will return to the gate, baring teeth hard barking and is moved away. Famous will attempt to lunge forward while hard barking excessively and is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 10/01/25 Due to medical, Famous cannot attend PG. 09/11/25 cannot conduct due to a lack of focus.

Summary (5):: 11/30/25: Famous is reported to be highly dog reactive when leaving kennel and on walks, and is also reported to have uncontrollable zoomies, jumping on to staff often.

Summary (6):: 11/28/25: Famous is laying down in his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward with a loose body and begins jumping at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He then pulls hard with a tense body and begins pulling towards the dog in kennel next to him and starts vocalizing when quickly passing through the small dogs room in kennels. On a walk outside, he would jump up on the handler and is able to sit for treats. He would become tense and try to pull while vocalizing at a dog passing by. He is able to settle when the dog is out of sight and then sits for treats again. He pulls hard with heavy panting while trying to pull towards the dogs in kennels on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. Previous stay at ACC: 11/7/25: Famous was reported to attempt to redirect when he was reacting to a small dog in there kennel. Famous whipped around and nipped the handlers clothing and was able to be stiff armed and walked past the kennel. Famous was reported to be otherwise fine for his walk and returning to kennel. 11/03/25 Famous is jumping onto his kennel door excessively as the handler approaches. Famous appears aroused as he pants heavily displaying wide dilated eyes. Famous is leashed as he drops down to all fours when jumping up and down and is quickly taken out of the kennel room. Famous will pull his way out of the building, reluctant to take a toy. Famous displays a loose frame as he pulls on leash. Directional leash pressure is applied and as the walk commences, Famous will slow his pace down, walking moderately as he now keeps a toy in his mouth. Famous will take treats gently when administered, sitting willingly when soliciting them. As he is returned to the facility, he will drop his toy and begin to pull again. He will find a toy on the ground and carry it to the entrance of the building and drop it. Famous will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue as the handler tosses a toy into his kennel. 10/31/25 (staff reported): Staff report that they observed Famous head whip towards handler's leg when reacting to another dog on a walk. He did not make contact. 10/29/25: Famous comes to the front of his kennel when approached with a loose, wiggly body. He is easily leashed and taken into the behavior room. Famous will approach both staff members in the room and sit by them for petting. He leans in for petting on his head and body and takes treats. He is easily leashed and returned to his kennel without issue

Summary (7):: 10/23/25 (Trainer Note): Famous is jumping up at the front of his kennel panting heavily and hypersalivating. The glass of the kennel is smeared in saliva. Famous is easily leashed and pulls hard to the canine training room. Famous pants incessantly for the duration of the interaction and has difficulty focusing. The handler engages him with touch and he is intermittently able to do so. Famous occasionally mouths the handler but is easily redirected. He leans into contact and is returned to kennel without issue. 10/10/25: Famous is jumping up at the front of kennel, panting, screeching, and hypersalivating as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pushes his way out of kennel, pulling moderately to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). Famous is highly stressed throughout his time in the room, panting, and pacing and does not settle. After his session, he is returning to kennel safely. 09/19/25 (Trainer Note): Famous is jumping up in his kennel panting heavily as the handler approaches. He mouths at the leash but takes treats and allows the handler to leash him. Famous pulls hard to the canine training room, barking and lunging at dogs in crates as he walks past. The handler works with him on the "touch" cue and on the LATTE enrichment game. Famous participates readily and visibly relaxes, moving more slowly and decreasing the intensity of his pant. He is easily leashed and led to the canine live room. Famous is fitted with a harness and assisted up onto the slat mill. He initially presses flat against the mill, belly crawling forward, but is walking after a few minutes. Handlers encourage him to continue walking for several minutes. Famous is then easily leashed, the harness is removed, and he is returned to kennel without issue. 09/05/25 ( Assessment note): Famous is jumping up in his kennel, appearing highly aroused. As the handler opens the door to leash him, he sticks his paw out and begins gripping onto the handler’s leg. Once leashed, he is brought to the assessment room where a collar and drag leash are placed on him. Inside the room, Famous exhibits a high level of excitement and lack of manners, repeatedly jumping up on handlers and showing difficulty settling. His pupils are dilated, and he displays heavy panting throughout the session. He also attempts to mount the handler, ripping at the back of their legs as they are running with him. When the session is complete, Famous is brought back to his kennel safely without any further issues. For more information, see behavior assessment.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Famous be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats: Due to Famous's behavior towards small animals, we recommend he does not go to a home with cats. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Famous reactivity while in care, we recommend he be placed in a home with no other pets at this time. We recommend he avoid all dog parks as well.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Famous previous owner notes that he may growl when his food bowl is approached. We recommend that Famous be left alone while eating, and that food-guarding behavior modification steps be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Famous’ mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high-value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: Famous was observed to mouth on the handler’s arm and clothing during his handling assessment. This behavior suggests poor bite inhibition and may be linked to excitement or stress. Training should focus on redirecting to appropriate chew items and reinforcing calm, gentle interactions to improve impulse control and reduce mouthiness. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition. Anxiety / Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control:Famous displays signs of high arousal and anxiety, including excessive jumping, heavy panting, and dilated pupils. These behaviors suggest poor impulse control and difficulty self-regulating in stimulating environments. Training should focus on calming exercises, structured routines, and reinforcing alternative behaviors to help Famous settle and respond more appropriately to excitement or stress. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety and Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control. Strength/Leash Pulling: Famous has been observed to hard pull on the leash during walks, indicating a need for leash manners training. Using appropriate walking equipment (e.g., front-clip harness) and teaching loose-leash walking techniques through consistent reinforcement will help improve his leash behavior and make walks more manageable. Please see the handout on Strength/Leash Pulling. Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression / Low Threshold for Arousal:When approached in his kennel, Famous exhibits a low threshold for arousal and potential defensive behavior. He grips the handler’s leg with his paw as the door opens, indicating discomfort and a need for control. During the jog portion of his handling assessment, he escalated to mounting and attempted to nip at the assessor’s calf. These behaviors highlight a need for careful management, desensitization to handling, and impulse control training to reduce reactivity and prevent escalation. Please see the handout on Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression / Low Threshold for Arousal.
