Batman
Hello, my name is Batman. My animal id is #254335. I am a male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/12/2026, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.
Batman is at risk list for medical reasons. Batman has neurologic abnormalities that could be consistent with cerebellar hypoplasia, but we are unable to confirm in shelter. He also was noted to have stomatitis. Behaviorally, Batman is fearful, but has allowed handling.

I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am playful and cute! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/20/26 FB61 Lying in back of kennel, body tense and head lowered onto the floor. He eats the treat offered (while remaining focused on me) and I begin clicking and rewarding each time he leans forward to take a treat. He flinches hard and stops eating when I attempt touch, so I keep focusing on him sniffing my hand or leaning forward. 5/22/26 Batman is lying toward the front of his kennel with one arm stretched forward in his resting position. He stays in place as I open the kennel door. I place a few dry treats in front of him and he sniffs and licks one, but doesn't eat it. His ears are forward and his eyes are wide but with normal sized pupils. I let him sniff my finger and then lightly pet the side of his face. He pulls his outstretched arm back at this point but does not move otherwise. He tolerates the petting but does not lean into it. I leave him a few more treats and end here. 6/05/26 FB61 Lying in back of kennel, body and face tense with his ears forward and his tail draped around his lower back. He makes eye contact when spoken to and he tolerates petting along his head and face while both flattening his ears and leaning in gently. He slow blinks and tolerates all body pets. He begins to play with the catnip toy offered after I've closed the kennel door and he LOVES squeeze-ups. He will even lick churu from your palms or hands. Has potential! 6/6/26 FB79 In the back of his kennel, Batman is curled up with a neutral face and body then looks up when i open the kennel door; his eyes widen but he leans in to sniff the tool i bring in with treats. He had no interest but when i used the tool to pet he remained tolerant and allowed all petting on his head and cheeks. He then leaned in to sniff the treats that i placed down for him but was hesitant to start to enjoy as he started to pull away from the tool. 6/7/26 Vol. Batman was lying in his bed, I put Squeeze Up and Temptations in a tray near him. He ate the Squeeze Up first. I petted his head and he pulled back, with ears lowered. I petted him on his back and he tolerated that better. After being petted for a while, he turned away and faced the back of the kennel, not looking in my direction. I ended the interaction by leaving more treats in his kennel. I saw him move towards them a short time later. He is a bit timid at this time. 6/10/26 FB61 Lying in box, body and face relaxed with his eyes soft and his pupils dilated. He tenses as the kennel door opens, then he tolerates all petting while flattening his ears and leaning away from my hand. He shows no signs of further escalation. I give him some toys and he spends the remainder of the time that I'm in the room playing with his mousie! So cute.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other
Potential challenges comments:: Batman is a cat that has never been appropriately socialized to humans and will require additional time and effort to build positive associations and interact comfortably with humans. Please see behavior flyer for more information.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Batman was lying in the back of his kennel as the assessor approached, body low, face tense and his tail wrapped tightly round his feet. Batman avoided eye contact when spoken to and he shifted his weight and began blinking hard and rapidly as the kennel door opened. Batman tolerated petting along his head and body while squeezing his eyes shut, backing away, flattening his ears and flinching. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Batman appears to be fearful and may not have had much human interaction up to this point. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he does attempt to flee and avoid human contact. During the assessment he displayed distance increasing behaviors and would benefit from extra socialization. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents who are preferably familiar with kitten socialization or are open to detailed counseling by staff. Contact with young children should be avoided or done under strict supervision to prevent provoking a fear response, further delaying socialization.
