Animal Profile

Honey Bee

Hello, my name is Honey Bee. My animal id is #236404. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/10/2025.

Honey Bee is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Honey Bee is overweight and is being treated for a URI.

A volunteer writes: Welcoming me to her condo with some very heartfelt nuzzles, Honey Bee hopped onto her condo perch to review what just happened. Nuzzles, headbutts, chin rubs, those are completely on the up and up, but Honey Bee needed a moment to think about it. No problem. I sat down to wait for her inquiry results but before I could, Honey Bee hopped back down and returned to her nuzzles, seeming to apologize for all the moments that passed without one. Honey Bee's thoughtful approach to shelter life makes sense because she's been through some big changes recently and finding her footing is a work in progress. Thankfully Honey Bee loves our collection of toys and is always ready to have a little treat, but sometimes making new friends can be confusing. She'd emphatically nuzzle my hand and then hop up to her condo perch before coming down to do it all over again. Honey Bee doesn't love the Care Center, but wants you to know that she's trying her best to find you. What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

KNOWN HISTORY:: Honey Bee was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. It appears she previously lived with 1 adult. There was a previous bite incident on 9/10/25 (please see potential challenges section for more info). Upon intake the cat was growling inside the carrier. Cat walked from carrier into a den, and was taken back to medical. Staff did not scan for m/c, or place ACC collar.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/20/25 FB79 On the top part of her kennel Honey Bee lays asleep with her tail loosely wrapped and lifts her head when I open the food slot and speak to her. She’s slow blinks a few times and reaches her paw out to stretch, but when I introduced the pointer tool she quickly hisses swats, striking it with force and starts too low growl/grumble. I tossed in some treats and respect her space. 9/23/25 FB61 Honeybee was loafed in the front of her kennel as I approached, body and face neutral with her ears forward and her feet and tail tucked. Honeybee sat upright and tensed a bit as I opened the kennel door, however, she tolerated petting today while backing away and retreating onto her cat den. I reward her with treats and a catnip toy which she engages with immediately. 9/26/25 FB61 Crouched in front of kennel, body and face tense with her pupils dilated and her feet and tail tucked. She enjoys her play therapy session and watches the cat dancing toy while remaining stoic in her loafed position. She does not engage much with the catnip toy offered, however she eats the squeeze-ups offered right away! Will continue to build positive associations. 9/27/25 FB79 Sitting at the side of her den, HoneyBee slow blinks when i bend down to speak to her; she meows very quietly and when i open the kennel door for her to sniff the tool she leans in and rubs her cheek on it. Honey enjoys pets on her head and cheeks as well as until her chin but when pet down her back she tensed up arching her back and snapping back to watch the tool. I brought the tool back for head pets and this time when i pet her back her stressed meowed at swatted the tool without claws. She remained tolerant otherwise. 9/29/25 FB79 Perched up at the front of the kennel, Honey has her paws tucked with her tail tightly wrapped and her eyes shut as she napped. When i opened the cubby door to place down some treats she stood with a mid level tail and stretched as she leaned in slowly to sniff and enjoy the snack. She paid no mind to my hand that was still held close. 10/03/25 FB61 Honeybee was sitting in front of her kennel as I approached, her ears forward, her face slightly tense and her tail curled around her body. Honeybee stood up taller as the kennel door opened and today she allowed all petting with the scratcher tool while leaning in and tilting her ears. Her tail sways back-and-forth as it lowered, however she does not escalate further! I reward with treats if these behaviors remain consistent, she could be made available for adoption. 10/4/25 FB79 Honey is at the front of her kennel with a high tail and wide eyes when i bent down to speak; she chirps as i slow blink & when i open the kennel door she tenses up arching her back & slowly backing up towards her den. However, she remained tolerant of my presence although still tense and wide eyed she tolerated petting on her head with the tool and when treats were tossed in side she leaned in to enjoy. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Affectionate,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: There was a previous bite incident with two individuals on 9/10/25, with limited information provided. Officer stated that the cat's owner was bitten on the right leg. Officer said that an officer was bitten on the right arm. Both bites broke skin. The events leading up to the initial bite were not specified and the specific details of the bite involving the officer were not provided.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Honey Bee would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Honey Bee is sitting in her den with her face poking out, eyes wide and dilated, ears slightly tilted. As the cage door is opened, she ducks back in and can't be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the scratcher tool is introduced into the den, the assessor is able to make contact with the tool. The den cover is lifted and she is sitting with a tense face and body, seeming to be tolerant of touch with the tool but wary, ears tilted. She doesn't show interest in treats offered. When the Assess-A-Hand is introduced, she tenses and hisses, eyes wide and ears tilted flat. She swats and holds the fake hand down with a paw. When touch is attempted again, she swats with both paws and continues to hiss and growl. The cage door is closed and the assessor goes to end the interaction but she comes out of the den, ears tilted and tail low. She again tenses when the fake hand is offered, continuing to hold/pin the hand down when touch is attempted before escalating to hissing and standing on her back legs and swatting with both front paws. She then runs up onto the shelf quickly hissing and growling. Pick up is not attempted. 10/10/25 Honey Bee was standing in the front of his kennel as the assessor approached, ears forward, tail low and body hunched. Honey Bee made eye contact when spoken to and she began rubbing against the kennel door as the assessor opened it. Honey Bee allowed petting along her head and body with the assess-a-hand while leaning in, vocalizing and turning her head to watch the hand with squinted eyes and tilted ears. Honey Bee is currently showing some conflicted behaviors. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Honey Bee tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
