Animal Profile

Wind

Hello, my name is Wind. My animal id is #203691. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/8/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - out of country.

Wind is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Wind in care has been highly anxious, and is unable to self regulate when outside for interactions. Wind in kennel is observed to pace in a circle and jump on his kennel door, while also trying to paw, and pace side to side incessantly while staff is cleaning the kennel rooms. Wind has began to grab onto random objects such as beds, as well as being a constant high state of arousal during interactions. Wind when in this high states of anxiety/arousal, begins to grab onto random objects resulting in bleeding on his tongue and eyes. Medically, Wind is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I can be picky about my canine friends. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. A volunteer writes: Wind 💨 It took us a while to get the chance to meet this cute man, and as always it was worth the wait. How can one not melt at the site of his sweet face? As is probably obvious, Wind suffers with allergies and seems pretty uncomfortable in his skin. He backs into our offers for booty scratches, hopping onto the step and showing us all his itchy spots. During his assessment Wind was scared of the toy, but by the time we meet him he's warmed up enough to play. He is an independent player, tossing his toy about and catching it, and then settling into a nook to chew on it. He loves to show it off as well, and at the end of our time together he walks it in circles around his kennel with it and hops up to show me when he sees me peering in spying on him. Wind was left behind by someone who left their apartment. Another family took over his care for 6 months and due to their own health couldn't continue caring for him. They said he is a good boy, potty trained and very affectionate with people he knows. They told us he needs proper time to warm to new people, and barks at dogs on walks. At the shelter he was fearful with the novel greeter dog, and sniffed the ground and moved away to avoid them.

Summary:: Wind's previous owner reports that Wind is known to bark at other leashed and off leashed dogs on walks. No other experience reported. 11/18/24 Wind is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Wind doesn't greet the novel male dog at the gate, keeps to himself, displacement sniffing. Wind will maintain his distance away from the gate displaying a slightly tense frame. Wind is returned to his kennel. 09/07/24 When Wind is introduced to a novel male dog off-leash at the Care Center, he trots over toward the gate with an erect swift wagging tail. Wind begins practicing avoidance by scenting the ground. When the novel male begins whining persistently while pawing and digging at the bottom. Wind tries to distance himself and find an exit. To prevent further stress on the novel male dog, was removed from the pen.

Summary (4):: 12/10/24 Wind is jumping on the kennel door as the handler approaches, panting heavily with wide pupils. Handler 2 uses a squeaker to get him off the door and handler 1 is able to leash him easily. Wind pulls moderately to the behavior room where puzzle feeders and snuffle mats are on the floor for enrichment. Wind ignores these and immediately begins playing with the toys in the room, displaying high arousal as he pants heavily, and his body vibrates and shakes with energy. Handler 3 begins a 2-toy trade fetch for several minutes. Wind does not tire as he continuously chases and brings back the toys the handler throws with no breaks. He is easily leashed and handler 2 lures him back to his kennel with a toy with no issues. 12/9: The room is quiet as a handler walks through the rooms, collecting the musical enrichment at the end of the day. When they near Wind's kennel, he is standing at the door. He bares his teeth and starts jumping up and snapping as the handler passes him. The handler stops to toss in treats to lure him down from the door but he immediately begins jumping up snapping at the air in the direction of the handler's fingers.

Summary (5):: 12/5/24: Wind was leashed with ease and walked to the yard. Once on the sidewalk, Wind began to leash bite and pull. Handler got his attention with a squeaker and he was easily redirected with a treat scatter. Once in the pen on a drag leash, Wind immediately began playing with a jolly ball. Handler introduced a second jolly ball and they swapped them back and forth throughout interaction. Wind excitedly bounded around the yard with the jolly balls for quite some time, appearing playful and at ease. Wind would bring the jolly ball over to handler to solicit tug but handler would redirect with the second jolly ball instead. After plenty of exercise it began to snow, so handler leashed Wind with a slip leash and kept the drag leash on as a decoy leash. Wind briefly leash bit in the pen, but quickly lost interest and proceeded to the care center. Wind was unclipped from the drag leash without issue and entered kennel with ease. Handler brought him a peanut butter coated Nylabone for in kennel enrichment which he picked up and carried over to his blanket. 12/1/24: Wind was leashed with ease and brought to the BA room. Wind displayed a high level of arousal throughout interaction, racing around the room playing rough with a jolly ball. Handler redirected Wind with other softer toys and tossed them onto the kuranda bed to encourage him to settle in one place. Wind chewed his toys for a short time before picking up the kuranda bed in his mouth and dragging it all around the room. A second handler used a pet corrector to get him to drop the bed, and a third handler leashed him. Handlers observed blood in Wind's mouth and some drops of blood on the floor. Wind was returned to kennel by handler three and an e-mail was sent to VS. 11/26/24: Staff report that Wind has become reactive to cleaning tools when they are used in front of his kennel (brush, squeegee). He is reported to follow it side to side, digging/ swiping his feet under the door and hard barking. Wind also jumps up on the side of the kennel reacting to water stream as staff are cleaning neighboring kennel. 11/22/24 (Trainer Note): Wind's behavior remains the same as the 11/15/24 . 11/18/24: Another member of staff brings Wind out to the play yard for playgroup. It is reported that as he is in the yard, he bites onto a kuranda bed and will not let go for treats or toys. Once Wind lets go of the kuranda bed, he begins jumping up and leash biting and is stiff armed. Wind is returned to kennel safely.

Summary (6):: 11/15/24 (Trainer Note): Wind is standing on the kennel doors and panting moderately as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Wind shows little interest in the enrichment items except the Kong Wobbler, which he plays eagerly with for an extended period. Wind is returned to kennel without issue. 11/11/24: Wind is standing at the front of kennel, paws up on the door as handler approaches. He is leashed and walks to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). Wind is social with handlers throughout his time in the room and enjoys playing with toys. After his assessment, he is returned to kennel safely. 11/09/24: Wind is standing at the front of kennel, paws up on the glass as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. Wind is collared, clipped to a drag lead, and free to explore the space. He is social with handlers, approaching to solicit petting and treats. Wind will "sit" and "shake" when cued and takes treats gently from hand. He spends time playing with multiple soft toys and will nudge the toy bin open to retrieve more. After his session in the room, he is leashed and returns to kennel safely. 09/20/24: Wind is standing at the front of kennel with a loose wiggly body as handler approaches. Handler tosses treats which Wind readily eats and he is leashed with ease. Wind walks with a loose leash to the Canine Behavior Office where he is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Wind spends time scenting and engaging with enrichment items including snuffle and licky mats. Handler tosses toys which he will fetch and shake around. Wind trades toys for tossed treats. He is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely.

Summary (7):: 09/13/24: Wind is standing at the front of kennel with a loose wiggly body as handler approaches. Handler offers a toy which he takes readily and is leashed with ease. Wind carries the toy in his mouth and pulls mildly while out for a walk. Wind scents and marks throughout his walk. He will take treats gently from hand. Wind drops his toy and will begin to lightly nibble on the toy clipped to handler's treat pouch. Handler offers the toy and Wind will carry it for the remainder of his walk. He is returned to kennel safely. 09/07/24: Wind will be handed over from an ACS to a CBS for PG and will allow leash exchange and Wind is brought to the play-pin for a gate greet. Wind will begin biting his drag leash as handler attempts to pick the leash up and will be offered treats to exchange, once done eating treats Wind will attempt to leash bite again but will be stiff armed by handler. Wind will be escorted to the gate to meet his playmate and will pace with a loose frame sniffing his plate mate through the gate, once Wind is done will walk away and handler will grab the leash and Wind will begin excessive leash biting and handler will stiff arms him again and the slip lead is placed back on Wind and he will be brought back to his kennel safely. 8/5/24: Wind approached handler at front of kennel and tolerated slip leash being placed over head. He walked to the BA room for his assessment. Wind tolerated brief touch and allowed handlers to collar him without issue. Wind had a timid demeanor and displayed FAS by panting, but after some time in the room he somewhat warmed up to handlers who he would approach and accept gentle pets from. He was returned to kennel with ease.

Date of intake:: 11/8/2024

Summary:: Allowed staff to do all handling with ease

ENERGY LEVEL:: Wind is described by his previous owners as having a medium energy level. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Wind's potential challenges we recommend she is placed in adult only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During the assessment Wind began to grab the assessor hand, it is essential to work on desensitizing her to having his possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding Anxiety/Fearful: Wind has reported to bark at strangers and is fearful in care, but warms up with a slow approach. Always allow Wind to approach new situations at her own pace, and never force her into uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce his fearfulness and build her confidence. Please see the handout on the decompression period and generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Wind is noted to reacts to bikes, scooters, and rats on walks. He will react by lunging at them. Gradually decrease the distance while rewarding calm behavior with treats. Teach Wind alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or performing a "sit" command when he sees a trigger. Consistent training and positive reinforcement will help reduce his reactivity over time. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Low threshold for arousal- In dogs is a state of heightened excitement and alertness triggered by social interactions or environmental stimuli, leading to behaviors like excessive barking, restlessness, jumping, mouthing, and pacing. Managing this condition involves consistent training with positive reinforcement, maintaining a structured routine, minimizing exposure to triggers, ensuring ample physical exercise, and providing mental stimulation through puzzle toys and interactive games. For severe cases, consulting a veterinary behaviorist or professional dog trainer is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Low threshold for arousal.
