Jetta
Hello, my name is Jetta. My animal id is #217355. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/24/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - will need ongoing vet care.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

She is reported to be fearful with the potential for defensive aggression, escalating to growling, lunging and barking at novel people approaching her kennel. She has remained highly fearful and shut down, uncomfortable with interactions with care staff. Her previous owner reported she is friendly with strangers and know the cue Sit. She will need an experienced foster and adopter through a New Hope partner that can engage in positive reinforcement reward-based training to address these challenges.

Date of assessment:: 12/27/2024
Summary:: Jetta was observed to escalate to fearful, defensive behaviors such as growling, baring teeth, and charging her kennel door. Due to these behaviors, she will not get a handling assessment.
Summary:: 1/8/25: Jetta will not approach the gate when another dog is present. She is tense bodied and then seeks exit.
Summary (7):: 1/13/25: Jetta is at the front of the kennel barking and growling while handler attempts to leash her. When Jetta is offered a treat it has to be placed close to her nose for her to become receptive and quickly take the treat. Jetta continues to be receptive to treats and a treat is used to guide her head through the leash. On the walk Jetta does not pull or react to stimuli she is returned to kennel without issue. 12/26/24: Jetta is laying at the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She quickly sits up and begins to hard bark at handler who begins tossing pieces of chicken towards her, however she ignores them and continues to bark at handlers becoming progressively more intense. Handler unlocks kennel door and she briefly stops but continues for a moment as handler attempts to lasso her. She is successfully leashed after two attempts and stops barking, handler opens her kennel door and she quickly walks out of kennel. She is walked out to the backyard for her walk. While walking with handler she does not pull and walks alongside handler without issue. She does not accept treats from handler while outside and sniffs around the open yards. She allows handler to remove an extra leash attached to her harness and once finished with her walk she allows handler to clip her. She is returned to kennel without issue. 12/25/24: Jetta is at the back of her kennel as handler arrives. She produces a low growl and stares at handler as the approach and look into kennel. She begins barking at handler who produces high value treats and begins tossing them to her. She initially smells a piece but continues staring at handler, growling and barking. She continues as handler opens door and produces a leash and sticks it in the kennel for her to possibly approach and sniff, but she stays back only moving forward slightly. Handler lassos the leash over Jetta's head and completely opens her kennel door while also tossing more treats for her, which she ignores. Handler waits for a while, giving her time to approach the front on her own time but after briefly moving forward she moves back to the center of her kennel and sits down. She sits there unmoving for a while, during which handler continues to toss treats and uses squeaky toys in an attempt to coax her out but all attempts are unsuccessful. She is unleashed using a hook and interaction is ended.
Date of intake:: 12/24/2024
Summary:: Soft at first but began to growl and snap
Date of initial:: 12/27/2024
Summary:: Hard barking, charging kennel, sedated
ENERGY LEVEL:: Jetta is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to defensive behaviors we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Handling/touch sensitivity: In the Care Centers, Jetta was observed to hard bark, growl and charge at the kennel door. Positive reinforcment should be used to help Jetta associate people and some handing with things she likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression and Handling/touch sensitivity. Strength/leash pulling: Jetta's owner stated Jetta pulls. She should get a front clip harness to help alleviate her strength. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
