Saphire
Hello, my name is Saphire. My animal id is #230872. I am a desexed female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/30/2025.
Saphire is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Saphire in the care center has been struggling to acclimate, leash biting in attempts to remove her from kennel making it difficult to walk her safely at times. Saphire is also reactive to other dogs on leash, lunging and pulling towards other dogs periodically fixating on them but can be refocused at times. Medically, Saphire has a rash around her spay site.

Medically, Saphire has a rash around her spay site. Saphire is a bright and observant pup enrolled in our Shelter Scholars program, where she's working on managing on-leash reactivity and building more confident, calm walking habits. Through positive reinforcement training and focused leash work, Saphire is learning to stay engaged with her handler and redirect her attention when faced with distractions or other dogs. She's making steady progress and showing just how capable and eager she is to grow. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A volunteer writes: Saphire was dropped off at a police station without any information. Seemingly, Saphire had just given birth. She looks like a baby herself, barely a year old without much life experience. Initially, she was very nervous and confused by her new surroundings. But recently, Saphire had been social and soft, warming up to people quickly. We learn the way to her heart is through the insides of vienna sausages (none of the casing for Saphire please and thank you). After she gets plenty of sausages personally dissected by us, Saphire allows herself to be a bit more of a silly puppy than she showed us initially. Her back legs can't keep up with her front when she zooms around, as if she just grew into her paws. Her uncoordinated antics delight us. When greeting a dog at the shelter, Saphire was fearful and sought out the comfort of the people around her.

Summary:: Due to Saphire entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/07/25 Saphire is introduced at the gate to two novel female dogs on two separate occasions while off leash at the care center. Saphire will approach the gate with a soft, wiggly body, offering bounces, soliciting play. The female dog appears conflicted, walking away and maintaining her distance as Saphire remains present. The female dog is returned. Upon Saphire's second greet, she presents as stiff along the gate line, this time displaying a square-like posture. The female dog is soft and wiggly at the gate, while Saphire maintains her tense frame and closed mouth. Both dogs are returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 07/03/25: While off leash at the Care Center, Saphire is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate, Saphire approaches cautiously with a tucked tail, while the novel male approaches while displacement scenting. The two dogs briefly engage in mutual scenting through the gate. Saphire then disengages from the gate and seeks out the handlers, at which point her body posture loosens and her tail becomes untucked. When she returns to the gate, she appears loose and wiggly but diverts her focus to the handlers behind the gate, climbing to solicit attention and ignoring the novel male, who remains present. The novel male eventually disengages and also seeks out the handler. Both dogs are then separated, concluding the interaction.
