Azul
Hello, my name is Azul. My animal id is #217428. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/26/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - abandoned by previous owner.
Azul is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Azul has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and is displaying a high level of kennel stress. While he was shown social behaviors with handlers and staff, Azul has shown a concerning level of kennel reactivity in and out of the kennel. In his kennel, Azul has been seen hard barking, screeching, bouncing off his kennel walls, and heavily panting with red eyes when people or other dogs pass his kennel. When being leashed, Azul becomes aroused, lunging at the kennel door albeit inconsistently and will kennel fight with other dogs as he is walked out of the room. Once out of his kennel, he is unable to settle but will engage with petting and accepts treats. Medically, Azul is apparently healthy.

Azul came to ACC after his previous owner could no longer care for him. In his previous home, Azul was described as a social and affectionate dog who loved to spend time where his people were. He is a very rambunctious young boy - who still has some leash manners to master - but has a lot of love to give his new family! What my friends at ACC say about me: I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I lived with children in my previous home.

Summary (6):: 01/15/25: Azul was lunging, barking, and growling at another dog while on leash and re-entering the building. He would not follow the handler and would plant himself before attempting to pull back towards the other dog.
Summary (7):: 01/13/25: (1) Azul is at the front of his kennel darting form side to side or bouncing off his kennel walls while barking and screeching when either people or other dogs pass his kennel. He does not settle even when a handler attempts to redirect him with treats. (2) Azul is moved to a kennel closer to the door to accommodate his kennel fighting. 01/12/25: As handlers remove dogs and clean kennels, Azul begins hard barking and screeching at the other dogs that pass his kennel. Once out of sight, Azul begins bouncing off the kennel walls, panting heavily, head thrown back while staring at the ceiling. 01/07/25 (Trainer Note): Azul is standing neutrally in kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and handler moves him quickly to the opposite wall with a short rope. Azul stares at the other dogs, but is easily removed from the room. He pulls moderately to the canine training room and is easily leashed. Azul moves frenetically around the space, engaging with interest in the various enrichment items. He approaches staff and leans into contact with a soft body and sweeping tail wag. Azul is returned to kennel without issue. 12/31/24 As the handler approaches Azul's kennel, he is lunging for the kennel door, aroused, displaying wide red eyes. The handler will attempt to get Azul to sit, in which he does for a split second before launching his body at the kennel door again. The handler will leash him as he forces his way out of the kennel, seeing his body language when he exits the kennel and quickly rushes him out of the room, but he immediately lunges for his neighboring kennel. Azul is still unable to settle, panting heavily, pulling his way outside. Azul is taken for a walk, where he will pull intensely with a loose frame. Azul administers him a treat in which he takes moderately. Throughout the walk, Azul will find places to explore but for the most part, pull aimlessly in any and every direction. Azul still unable to settle, is returned to the facility. Azul enters the building with no issue. When entering the kennel room, Azul lunges for the first two kennels before being rushed inside his kennel. 12/30/24: Azul is reported to kennel fight intensely when leaving kennel rooms. 12/27/24: Azul was standing at the front of his kennel as handler approached. He had a loose wiggly body and was able to be leashed with ease. He pulled on the way to the behavior room for his behavior assessment. He greeted the handlers in the room with a loose body and wagging tail. He was able to be collard and transferred to a drag lead for the assessment. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He was able to be leashed back and pulled while being taken to his kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Azul's anxiety and low threshold for arousal, we recommend a home with only adults at this time.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling- In the prior home it is reported that he will have daily potty accidents. To address house soiling, start by establishing a consistent routine for feeding, potty breaks, and exercise. Take him outside frequently, especially after meals, naps, and playtime, and always to the same spot to encourage familiarity. Reward him with treats and praise immediately after he eliminates outside. Supervise him indoors and confine him to a small area when you can't watch him. Clean any indoor accidents thoroughly to remove odors and prevent repeat incidents. Please see the handout on House soiling. Basic manners/poor impulse control- Azul will jump up on handlers with a loose body.To improve Azul's basic manners and impulse control, start by teaching him the "sit" command as an alternative behavior to jumping. When Azul approaches and looks like he might jump, ask him to sit and reward him with treats and praise when he complies. Consistently reinforce this behavior by rewarding him only when all four paws are on the ground. Practice this consistently in various settings to help Azul generalize the behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful-Is fearful when held/restrained and startled. To help reduce Azul's fear when held or restrained, start by gradually desensitizing him to gentle handling. Begin with short, positive sessions where you lightly touch or hold him, immediately rewarding calm behavior with treats and praise. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of handling as he becomes more comfortable. Pair these sessions with positive experiences, like playtime or favorite activities, to build positive associations. Always move slowly and calmly to avoid startling him. Please see the handout on decompression period. Anxiety: Azul has displayed intense levels of anxiety during his stay in care. He will need time to decompress and acclimate to a new home enviornment. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Azul is reported to kennel fight in the care center, lunging at other dogs when leaving his kennel room. we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. He will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. Strength/leash pulling- During walks, he pulls very hard on leash, maintaining tension the entire walk. To address leash pulling, start by using a no-pull harness to give you better control. Begin training in a low-distraction environment, rewarding him with treats and praise when he walks with a loose leash. Use the "stop and go" method: when he pulls, stop walking and wait for him to return to your side before continuing. Practice the "heel" command to encourage walking beside you. Gradually increase the level of distractions as he improves. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
