Whiskey Roll
Hello, my name is Whiskey Roll. My animal id is #211363. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 9 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/30/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Whiskey Roll is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Whiskey Roll has been struggling to acclimate inside the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Whiskey Roll when taken out for interactions displays high levels of anxiety and arousal. Whiskey Roll displays heavy panting, dilated pupils, and inability to settle on his own and strained expressions during interactions. Whiskey Roll has also redirected onto staff members when reacting to other dogs on leash. Medically, Whiskey Roll is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. A volunteer writes: If you love big, playful, outgoing dogs, then Whiskey Roll may be the perfect one for you! He makes friends very easily - being wiggly and waggy during his intake; and during his behavior assessment (where he also played a game of fetch with a squeaky toy); and was even friendly during his medical exam. He was a bit shy with me at first, but quickly warmed up, wiggling around as I pet him, and shaking his butt in the air when I gave him lower-back scratches. Whisky came to us due to a no-pets housing rule. His previous family describe him as social, affectionate, very active, and playful; and tell us he loves car rides, playing with toys, and snacking on blueberries, strawberries, rice, and chicken. Whisky is a young pup who needs help with his leash manners, and who can get overstimulated by the environment or when interacting with people, so he'd benefit from training to help him with this. He'll make a great student though - he already knows the cues for "sit" and "down." (He's housebroken, too!). You can meet this 67-pound bundle of cuteness at our Queens shelters where he's awaiting his fur-ever home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Whiskey Rolls Potential behavior challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- During Whiskey Roll handling assessment he began to heavily sniff the helper's feet and legs with a tense body, heavy panting beginning to grumble. When a familiar handler enters the room he lunges and attempts to mount the handler. Whiskey Roll has a low threshold for arousal, becoming overly excited quickly, especially when stimulated by the environment or interactions with handlers. Training to help him manage his arousal levels and teach him to remain calm in various situations will be essential for him well-being. Please see the handout on Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety- Whiskey Rolls has displayed heavy open-mouth panting, pacing, and lip-licking. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling- In the prior home Whiskey Roll is reported to pull hard on the lead. whiskey Rolls pulls hard on the leash, to the point of coughing and honking. This behavior highlights his strength and the need for training to teach him to walk calmly on a leash. Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage his pulling behavior.
