Larry
Hello, my name is Larry. My animal id is #236504. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/11/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLarry is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Larry has an upper respiratory infection and is eating little in care. He would benefit from a low stress environment that would allow for him to recover.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

KNOWN HISTORY:: Larry was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake staff was unable to collar or scan the cat due to its behavior. The cat began growling, hissing, vocalizing, and swatting at staff through the crate door. This continued even after staff managed to transfer the cat into a den.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/20/25 Fb58 In his den with his face partly visible, tenses and lip licks, hissing as the cage door is opened. He hisses again but sniffs the scratcher tool when it is offered out to him. I leave him some dry treats and squeeze up to eat later. 9/22/25 FB61 Larry was in his cat den as I approached, his head was visible through his den door and he was peering out at me with a tense face. He hissed when I offered treats and a catnip toy, however for the duration of time I'm in the room I see him slowly try to leave his den to eat his treats. When he notices me watching he retreats back into his den and slow-blinks hard. I return slow-blinks, speak to him softly and continue working with the other cats in the room. When I check on him later (after I had left the room) I see all the treats are gone! He is food motivated, which is good. I will continue to build positive associations. 9/30/25 FB06 Upon approach, den cover is slightly moved to the side when Larry proceeds to hiss and lunge out of his den. Interaction tool is moved into the cage through the slots and Larry spits and hisses and swats very hard at the tool. Interaction is ended.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to the behaviors displayed in shelter.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of the den, Larry can be heard loudly growling and grumbling when the kennel door is open; he hisses when the sheet was lifted from the den for a better view, and he is standing with a tense body, arched back wide/dilated eyes, forward ears, and a tightly wrapped tail. He continues to harshly hiss/spit/lunge towards the glass of the den, and when the assessor slowly brings in the tool he reaches out quickly, striking with force. Larry maintains a very alert and tense body posture with now flat ears as he watches the tool for any further movement while low growling and grumbling - every time the tool is attempted to be introduced into the den for petting he reaches out, striking with force, and eventually pulling the tool into the den with him. When the assessor introduces the assess-a-hand into the den, Larry lunges, biting and releasing before hissing and low growling as he fixates on it for any further movement. Larry did not tolerate any petting with the hand as he continued to lunge and attempt to strike it. Larry is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat/bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter while not currently tolerating petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
