Animal Profile

France

Hello, my name is France. My animal id is #218709. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/15/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

France is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. At the Care Centers, France has been social with handlers and has tolerated all handling. However, he has consistently shown concerning arousal behaviors, including intense mounting, and kennel fighting when passing by other dogs. France has had multiple incidents with both volunteers and staff where he will begin to mount non-stop throughout their interaction and is un-redirectable. This behavior has presented itself in care, in the yard, in the driveway, as well as the street. He has been observed to persistently mount handlers legs, wrapping his legs around handlers legs and has to be pried off. He has remained very social with handlers during his stay and is very food motivated during training sessions. Medically, France is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

France arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center France has been observed to quickly become over aroused in the presence of handlers. France has been observed to jump up and mount handlers. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats or coaxing. France has also been observed to become tense when seeing another dog while on leash. This behavior is able to be easily redirectable. Due to the detailed behaviors, we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: I can go home today! My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: 1/28/25: France greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and wagging tail. He playbows and demand barks.

Summary (5):: 1/27/25: France is at the front of the kennel sitting when the handler approaches. France is easily leashed and taken to the street. For the first half of the walk France is easily walked with treats. He walks with a loose leash and is highly receptive to treats and the handler. Half way down the block France then jumps up on the handler, the handler attempts to use treats to redirect France. He is not receptive. France wraps his front paws around the handler's leg. The handler attempts to use mild leash pressure to redirect France. He is not receptive, he continues to mount the handler. Handler attempts to walk back to the building while using leash pressure to redirect France. Once at the driveway gate the handler is able to remove France from their leg. He continues to not be receptive to treats or squeakie sounds. He is able to be returned to kennel with no further issue.

Summary (6):: 1/25/25: (PM Walks) France is at the front of the kennel jumping up on his hind legs. Handler easily leashes him and leads him out of the kennel. During this, Handler notices France is pressing against the side of their leg. He is kept away until fully out of the room. While walking through the hall towards the driveway, France is trying to jump onto the handler's leg or pressing against the leg in an attempt to mount. Handler tosses treats and this redirects the behavior. In the driveway, handler scatters treats and France sniffs around and eats them. Occasionally, France jumps on the handler's leg and attempts to mount treats are tossed to redirect after France is pulled off handler's leg. France does not relieve himself. France is brought back into the shelter and handler goes to clip the leash and France begins to jump onto handler's leg and mounts. Handler struggles to keep France away so he can be redirected with treats but is unsuccessful. Handler quickly short-leashes France and returns France to his kennel without further issue. 1/25/25: France was observed to persistently mount handlers leg. He would wrap his legs around handlers legs and has to be pried off. Staff member reports that it began as they were walking on the street. Made Driveway walks only.

Summary (7):: 1/22/25 (Trainer Note): France is laying down in the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out to the yard for a walk. At first he is loose, wiggly, and sniffing all around the yard. He accepts pets and treats. Handler puts him on a drag leash and sets up a snuffle mat. He is not very interests in it, but will eat treats off the top. France shifted his focus to handler and became very hypervigilant of them and their movements. He was attempting to grab treats from the treat pouch when he jumped up at handler and began to mount handlers right leg. He was latched on and had a very strong grip. He was not redirected with squeaks or treats. Handler had to grab drag leash and straight arm him. He was very persistent and continued attempting to mount. Handler tossed a large amount of treats on the floor and was able to kennel rope him. Handler cued a "sit" to conclude the interaction on a good note. On his return to kennel he intensely kennel fought and lunged at the dogs as he was walked past. Handler departed and returned a couple hours later for a second attempt. He displayed the same behavior while being leashed, but as soon as he was removed he immediately mounted handlers leg. He persisted and was escalating in intensity, leading handler to use the pet corrector spray. He immediately ceased, looked disoriented, and handler cued a sit before continuing walk. He was rewarded and taken to the street. He continued attempting to mount, but it was not as frequent, and he was able to be redirected with treats. He is highly food motivated. Handler would reward only when 4 paws where on the floor. Towards the end of the walk France remained close to handler, and was receptive to verbal corrections when he would attempt to mount. With treats and corrections he completed his walk with minimal mounting. Upon return he intensely kennel fought and lunged towards the dogs. He was given a frozen, and stuffed enrichment toy which he immediately engaged with in kennel. 1/22/25: France was off leash in the yard with a volunteer when he began mouthing and mounting them. A staff member had to come and assist in getting France re-leashed and returned to kennel. 1/16/25: France is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered a treat and leashed while distracted before being brought to the street for a walk. During his walk France will pull moderately, attempting to approach some people as he passes. He spots a dog towards the end of his walk and pulls towards them with a slightly stiff posture but is redirected after being called and offered treats. He is then brought inside for his assessment, during which he approaches handlers, taking treats with moderate to hard pressure and allowing petting. He also tolerates collaring and once finished with his assessment he is clipped, brought back to kennel and returned without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on France so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to mouthie behavior and social hyperarousal we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Social Hyperarousal: France has been observed to jump up and mount handlers. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach France to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. France should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mounting, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from France. Please see handout on Arousal. Mouthiness: During his stay in the care center France has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach France to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. On Leash Reactivity: France has been observed to become tense when seeing another dog while on leash. This behavior was easily redirectable using coaxing and treats. France will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
