Animal Profile

Selly

Hello, my name is Selly. My animal id is #231243. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/5/2025.

Selly is at risk for medical reasons. She has multiple mammary masses with one large mass close to rupturing. Selly needs placement so she can have the mass (and chain) surgically removed to continue providing her with a good quality of life. She allows all handling for medical exams. Behaviorally, she is best suited for a single pet home and for an adopter who has experience managing the following behaviors: anxiety, barrier/on-leash reactivity, poor impulse control.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Selly is a bright and active pup enrolled in our Shelter Scholars program, where she's working on managing on-leash reactivity and building calmer, more focused walking habits. Through positive reinforcement, confidence-building activities, and consistent leash work, Selly is learning how to stay engaged with her handler and respond to distractions with greater ease. She's making steady progress and showing her potential to become a wonderful walking companion. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. A volunteer writes: Selly! An adorable gray princess - just our type. Selly is about 7 years old but has the spunk and lust for life of a dog 1/4 of her age. She is bright, energetic, and silly. She was originally found loose on Forest Ave, and hopped into a car with a good Samaritan. Since coming to the shelter, she has been charming people left and right. She toe taps while waiting for her walks, eager and excited to get out and see the world. Selly is stressed and uncomfortable around dogs, which makes the shelter extra scary and stressful for her. She does best when she is not around any other dogs and can be the center of your attention. With a girl with this much personality, you will never get bored.

Episode reported by behavior team: "ACS staff just told me that Selly 231243 possible had a seizure this morning, and when being walked outside began to fall over and do a swim motion with her paws while on the ground. Summary:: Due to Selly entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 07/17/25 Selly is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Selly immediately rushes the gate, lunging towards it muzzle punching the gate in the process upon even seeing the other dog. The female dog is moved to the back of their pen to allow decompression, while Selly snarls while being moved away as well. Selly is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 07/09/25 Selly is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog wile off leash at the care center. Selly slowly begins to approach the gate as the novel male dog lingers at the gate line while behind it. Selly maintains some distance from the gate but while the novel male dog is visible, her face is hard, and her posture is square. As the novel male dog begins to scent through the holes in the gate, Selly will pull towards the gate hard barking and snarling at this point and both dogs are moved away from the gate. As Selly is moved away, the novel male dog alert barks but by this point Selly is already being returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (5):: 09/18/25 (Trainer Note): Selly is standing at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. She opts into the 123 game by orienting towards the handler while loose leash walking and the handler encourages the behavior by participating. She is able to orient towards dogs and look away without issue. Selly occasionally gets stuck staring at a dog, but redirects quickly when the handler starts to back up. By the end of the session, Selly is able to sniff and engage with the grass as the other dog walks around her. She is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 09/13/25 (Trainer Note): Selly is chewing a toy on her bed as the handler approaches. She comes to the front with a loose body, but keeps moving away from the handler to bite a toy before dropping it. The handler throws a treat into the corner of the kennel and, as Selly goes to retrieve it, the handler removes the toy from the kennel. Selly is then leashed without issue and pulls moderately outside. She opts into the 123 game by looking up at the handler. Handler works on luring her into the heel position during counting. She is loose and social, leaning into contact. Handler first marks her for orienting towards dogs without escalating, but is able to allow her to turn away independently from dogs. She lunges once at a dog when there are dogs both in front of and behind her, but recovers quickly. Selly readily works with the handler on take a breath and the 123 game. She is returned to kennel without issue. 09/04/25 (Trainer Note): Selly is standing at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. Her harness is easily clipped and she pulls strongly outside, Selly attempts to pull towards the kennels, and is redirected with moderate leash pressure. Selly passes a dog on the sidewalk and attempts to lunge. The handler takes Selly to an area with more space to observe and begins to mark and reward each time she engages with a passing dog. After a few repetitions, Selly is able to disengage. When Selly is being returned back to her kennel, she passes a dog on the sidewalk, she is able to orient to the handler and remain under threshold. Selly and the handler walk through SDA and Room A (as there is dog traffic in the hallway) Selly will pull towards the kennels again, she is directed with moderate leash pressure and safely returned. Handler placed a walk in the hallway sign on her kennel. 08/13/25 (Trainer Note): Selly is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Handler guides her through the various enrichment items, but Selly has difficulty focusing, moving repeatedly away from the items. She improves over time, orienting towards the handler and spending more time with each item. Handler lures her into breathing and she participates intermittently. She plays the 123 game but is easily distracted, wandering away from the handler. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 08/06/25 (Trainer Note): Selly is standing at the front of the kennel vocalizing as the handler approaches. As she enters meet and greet, she becomes tense, displaying hackles as she pulls. As she passes crates and kennels, she remains tense, hard barking at the crate closest to the assessment room. Selly will enter the assessment room and become looser, soliciting pets from the accessor. (Please refer to BA in Behavior section for more insight). Selly is returned to her kennel, where she will be quickly walked through meet and greet to reduce her stress. She will enter her kennel willingly upon arrival. -

Date of intake:: 7/5/2025

Summary:: soliciting attention, allowed handling for intake tasks

Date of initial:: 7/7/2025

Summary:: social, did not like restraint, amenable to gentle handling

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to the high level of anxiety and jumping up seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. No cats: We recommend that Selly be placed in a home with no cats. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Selly's reactivity displayed while in care, we recommend she be the only pet in the home, along with avoiding all dog parks.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Selly would jump up and bounce off handlers during her assessment. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Anxiety: Selly appears anxious at the care center, panting, pacing, and unable to settle or focus readily during her assessment. We have no history on her behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Selly has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking hard. She may need positive reinforcement, reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
