Sinby
Hello, my name is Sinby. My animal id is #231814. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/2/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSinby is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Sinby plays gently and thoughtfully. We've heard that he's curious about strangers and warms up on his own terms, but this was in his life before. Before a steady stream of strangers tried introducing themselves to him. We can't blame Simby for wanting to stay tucked away in his den or trying his heartbreaking best to find somewhere else to hide. Simby was brought to us when his guardian had housing issues and he's been coming to terms with his new reality as well as a gentle hearted guy can be expected. Though it's hardly what we want, Care Center life has made Simby skeptical about our offerings of toys and treats, even more so of pets. Simby's hoping to find a patient and loving family who will meet him where he is and walk alongside him toward a brighter future.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/22/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense with his tail wrapped tightly around his body. He is tolerant of petting with the scratcher tool from within the den while tilting his ears and shifting away. He does not show immediate interest in the treats or the catnip toy offered. Hopefully he explores the offerings later when he feels more safe. Needs more time to adjust. 9/27/25 FB20 Sinby peeks his head out of den. he sniffs tool with treats, and after a few seconds retreats back. Interaction is ended, but a few minutes later he is out of the den and eaten the treats. 9/30/25 FB06 When the cage door was opened, Sinby was in his den low growling. Treats were offered on the scratcher while he continued to low growl. I removed the den cover and his ears were forward with wide eyes. I extended the scratcher into the den but Sinby began to show signs of fleeing, poking his head out of the den and watching the cage door. The den cover was not replaced to prevent fleeing and interaction was ended. 10/06/25 FB06 When Sinby's cage door is opened, he is laying in his den. I approached the den portal with the scratcher tool and when it got close he gave some light hisses. I was able to reach his cheek and touch it with the tool, which he was still light hissing. I ended the interaction with that as he is a "will flee". 10/9/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Sindy can be heard hissing when i open the kennel door and speak; when i introduce the pointer tool he strikes it with force and when i look inside he is tense with his back arched and his eyes wide. Sinby avoided eye contact as he started to lip lick and look around for an exit. 10/17/25 FB79 Sinby continues to displayed similar behaviors as the previous enrichment note with a tense body when the kennel door is opened followed by hissing and signs of FAS. 10/23/25 FB58 Sitting up on the shelf, tenses and hisses with ears tilted flat when he sees me. I open the food slot and push the catnip pillow closer. He tenses and sniffs the pillow but remains in place, and I sit and speak softly to him as I slow blink. He remains loafed with his ears still slightly tilted but seems slightly less reactive as well. He sits loafed, with neutral eyes, and a slightly tense body. I offer him a treat bag with catnip on it and he again leans forward to sniff. 10/24/25 & 10/27/25 FB79 Sinby is sitting in the middle of his kennel, he has a loose tail with his ears forward and wide eyes. However when i bend down to speak and open the kennel door he harshly hisses and flattens his ears to his head while lip licking. the more i speak without opening the door he continues to hiss harshly as his ears remain airplane. ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: 9/5/25 During his evaluation, Sinby displayed a very high level of FAS hissed and low growled while he was touch with the tool from inside the den. However once his den portal door was re-opened, as the assessor was about to close the door, he shot out of the den very quickly onto the top of the den. The door was closed, and when the assessor attempted to offer the tool out to him again now that he was out of the den, he ran to the front of the den and placed his front paws on the top of the cage door as if he was trying to find a way out. Currently appears to be very fearful and a potential flight risk as he seeks to flee to avoid interaction. 10/11/25 Upon meeting with Sinby again, he is sitting on the shelf in his cage with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated and ears tilted flat as he hisses and growls. He appears to continue to display a high level of FAS and defensive aggression but seems to be escalation to swatting and is deteriorating in shelter.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Sinby would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/5/25 + 10/5/25 On approach, Sinby is in the den and completely hidden from view - he cannot be coaxed out with treat or when spoken to softly. The assessor then closes the portal door and lifts the den cover to see him huddled and hunched at the back of the den with a tense face and body, eyes wide and pupils dilated, ears slightly tilted. He hisses and begins to low growl. The assessor lifts the den door slightly and offers the scratcher tool, he remains in place (shifting back slightly) and hisses again. He tolerates touch along his head and side but is very tense and frozen, ears flat and low growling. The assessor ends the interaction and pick up is not attempted. Once his den portal door was re-opened, as the assessor was about to close the door, he shot out of the den very quickly onto the top of the den. 10/11/25 Upon meeting with Sinby again, although he continues to display high levels of FAS, he appears to be deteriorating in shelter and will escalate to swatting multiple times. On approach, he is sitting on the shelf with a low and tense body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted flat as he hisses and low growls. When the assessor slowly opens the cage door, he lunges slightly and stress vocalizes as the scratcher tool is slowly offered out. He backs away and presses against the back of the cage with eyes wide and ears flat, continuing to hiss and is somewhat avoidant of touch with the tool, looking as if he is trying to find a way to flee. When the assessor attempts to pet him again with the tool, he swats at the tool hard multiple times. The assessor switches to the Assess-A-Hand, and he repeats these behaviors, escalating to swatting hard and holding the hand down as he growls and hisses, not removing his nails from the hand. He presents with a very high level of FAS throughout the interaction and has been throughout his stay at the shelter. Sinby is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
