Oats
Hello, my name is Oats . My animal id is #240321. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/27/2025.
Oats is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During his stay in the care center he has been obsvered to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to head whip back and forth with an open mouth upon contact and will jump up to bite the leash. Oats has also been noted to be dog reactive. Observed to pull hard towards other dogs with a tense body, and rear up on his hind legs. While out with handlers he is obsvered to be social and receptive to treats. Medically Oats is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I am looking for a home with a patient person.

Summary (6):: 12/1/25: Oats is at the front of his crate as handler approaches. He is then removed from his crate, where he would have a mild pull ahead of the handler. While waiting for the elevator, the handler begins to pet him and he would become aroused and jump onto the handler and slightly mouth the leash. Shortly after, he is then taken for a street walk where he would a moderate pull and would watch dogs with a tense body, but is easily redirected using squeakers. Oats is then brought back to the shelter for his reassessment, where he would display a low threshold for arousal. He is then easily returned back to his crate once the assessment and walk is over. 11/25/25: Oats is laying down quietly as handler approaches crate. Oats stands with soft body as crate is unlocked. Oats is easily leashed, pulls moderately hard down hallway ignoring other pop up crates. Oats is social with handler, takes treats for sit commands. Oats allows all petting, jumps once after being pet with loose body. Oats walks with mild pulling on sidewalk, neutral body, becomes loose when engaging with handler. Oats is walked back to MACC and crate without issue, takes treats dropped into crate.

He is taken for a street walk, while in the elevator he jumps up on handler with a soft body. They scratch his head and neck. He has a moderate to hard pull at times, as people walk by a narrow part of the sidewalk. Handler has Oats sit by the curb, feeding him treats and stays focused on them. He would just look at the people passing and focus back to handler taking more treats. He is social with handler, they scratch his side and he leans into their legs. When he hears a loud noise and he momentarily lowers his body with ears back but then goes back to a soft body sniffing a trash bag. He is easily clipped and returned to his pop up crate without issue. 11/9/25: Oats is at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and walked to the street with mild pulling. Handler offered treats and he takes the treats gently. Oats relieves himself and is walked back to the shelter. He is returned to his crate without issue. 11/2/25: Oats is at the front of his pop up crate with a soft body, he is easily leashed and gently takes treats while waiting for the elevator. He is taken for a street walk, he sniffs around and is aloof with handler. When people pass he has a mild pull towards people with a soft body. He relieves himself at multiple spots. He has a mild pull towards spots to sniff and is only social with handler when treats are presented. He is then taken to the play yard and placed on a drag leash. He goes around the pen and sniffs. There is another dog in the neighboring pen Oats goes to the fence and jumps up. He has a neutral body and occasionally barks at the other dog. Handler presents treats and he follows them, they scratch his head, neck and back. He is easily leashed and returned to his pop up crate without issue. 10/30/25: Oats is at the center of his crate lying down as handler approaches. He jumps up and accepts some treats from handler before being leashed and removed from kennel and walking to the street. When accepting treats Oats will exuberantly jump on handler until he gets a treat, he walks outside and pulls mildly while out and stops frequently to sniff and relieve himself. When seeing dogs Oats pulls hard and will stand on his hind legs with a tense body, he is difficult to redirect. After walking for a bit he is brought back inside for his assessment, once complete he is brought back to his crate where he slowly re-enters without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Oats so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: On Leash Reactivity: Oats is obsvered to pulls hard towards other dogs while on leash. Rearing up onto his hind legs. Oats will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting/ Arousal: Oats has been obsvered to quickly become over aroused and begin biting the leash and mouthing handlers. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Oats to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
