Animal Profile

Remy

Hello, my name is Remy. My animal id is #239736. I am a male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 10/20/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Remy is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with children. I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process! A volunteer writes: Remy is an absolutely beautiful silver-gray young man with intelligent green eyes who watches what I do closely. His expression show interest, even curiosity, and a bit of apprehension. Apparently, Remi hasn't had much experience of humans and is still learning, so is understandably cautious. However, he seems to have a pretty quiet disposition and is open to learning what we bipeds are all about. Remy does enjoy special treats and they seem to help teach him that humans can be generous.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Remy was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. He lived in a home with 40+ other cats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/23/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Remy appeared anxious, scanning the room when the den cover was lifted for a visual. He stayed tightly crouched but allowed gentle petting along his head and body with the scratcher tool throughout the assessment. He ignored treats and remained wary of his surroundings. 10/25/25 FB47 Remy was in the den, appearing fearful and made as if to flee. When offered treats and catnip, he ignored them but did stick his head out of the den door and stared at the assessor. 10/26/25 Vol. Remy was peeking out of his feral den. I offered him squeeze-up on a spoon, which he sniffed but didn’t eat. He moved his head back into the den; so, I left the spoon balanced on the edge of the den and closed the kennel door. He he poked his head out and ate all of the squeeze-up while I was still standing in front of the kennel. When I opened the door to get the spoon, he ducked back into the den. 10/28/25 Vol. Hiding in his privacy den but poked his head out occasionally. Tried to lure him out with some Squeeze-ups but wasn’t interested. His morning food was untouched so added some tuna which he immediately started eating. He backed away from the cat dancer. Never came out of his den. 10/29/25 FB32 Crouched down hiding in den, occasionally poking his head out of the den side door, and back in to hide. Ignores treats offered and then leans back and lip licks when pet on the head, cheeks, and body with the scratcher tool. When reaching close with my hand to attempt petting him, he harshly hisses with his eyes wide and ears tilted to the side. 10/31/25 Vol. Remy initially stayed in his den, but was very curious, coming forward to sniff around the den and watching my movements. With den cover lifted halfway, he enjoyed eating temptations tossed in his den while I stood there. He did not eat the churu in the tray I placed his den. Once kennel door closed, he came out of the den while I stood there, and he ate the temptations I placed close to his food bowl. His whiskers were down. 11/2/25 Vol. Note: Had pooped in front of the litter box Hiding in den but had come out to eat all breakfast. Looked out portal with dilated eyes and stared. Sniffed a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up dropped into den but didn't eat. Watched kennel cleaning from within den. Ate treats once the kennel door was closed. Poked head out of the portal repeatedly to investigate a 2nd cup of treats, then tried to use a paw to bring it into the den. Eventually gave in and leaned out to eat. Could not coax him to eat from my hand but came out of den to eat another cup with the door closed. Picked the cup up in his mouth and retreated to den when pet with the scratcher tool - definitely did not want to leave those treats behind! 11/01/25 FB47 Remy was in the den and poked his head out when the kennel door was cracked open, appearing ready to try to flee. He sniffed treats but didn’t eat them. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Remy is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and he may hiss or attempt to flee to avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old due to fearfulness. Counselor discretion advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Remy's behavior in shelter has been consistent over the past month. He was hiding in the den with his head poking out of the side door upon approach. When opening the door, he hisses and steps back into the den to completely hide. When removing the den cover, he hisses again and alertly focuses on the assessor's movement. He curiously pokes his head out of the den side door again, and then he hisses, flattens his ears, and retreats back into the den when reaching close to offer treats on the scratcher tool. He lip licks and sniffs the tool, and then leans back and turns away when receiving cheek rubs. He hisses and begins growling when stroking his body. When reaching close with the assessor's hand to attempt petting, he lip licks, hisses, steps back, and raises a paw up. After pulling their hand away, Remy eats treats initially offered when left alone. Remy tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
