Zizi
Hello, my name is Zizi. My animal id is #241943. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/18/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormZizi is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, he appears healthy.

Inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Zizi is an independent kitty who likes to do things on his own terms. Shelter life has been overwhelming for him, and he's currently very scared here, spending most of his time tucked away in his cozy den. But underneath that fear is a cat who simply needs time, patience, and a calm environment to feel safe. Right now, Zizi isn't comfortable with petting or handling, but with the right New Hope rescue partner and a quiet, low-stress home, he has the potential to feel much more secure. If you believe in giving overlooked animals a chance and have the patience to help a sensitive kitty come out of his shell, Zizi may be the one for you.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Zizi has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Zizi is hiding in his den upon approach. When the den cover is lifted, Zizi moves away and begins to hiss and growl. He continues hissing as the scratch tool is presented. He hisses at scratch tool, barely tolerating petting. As the scratch tool is being pulled out of den Zizi swats at the tool multiple times multiple times. He swats again as assessor slides on den cover. Zizi is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
