Britney Britney
Hello, my name is Britney Britney. My animal id is #214209. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/26/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive to other animals.
Britney Britney is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Britney Britney tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I can go home today! It could be with you! A volunteer writes: "A big baby who loves to be the star of the show" is a brilliant description entirely worthy of the affectionate and loyal Britney Britney. We've learned that she's someone who occasionally shows interest in crinkle toys, but whose curious and dynamic nature has become a bit limited by all the daily comings and goings in Adoptions. Britney Britney likes pets and having company but currently feels most comfortable in her den, so we don't often see her out and about. She was brought to us in November and hasn't had the easiest time finding her stride in the busy Care Center. While we hope she'll start coming out of her den more to introduce herself, what we really want is for her to find you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/3/24 FB58 IN her den and hidden from view - cannot be coaxed out. When the den cover is lifted, she sits with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. She is tolerant of pets with the tool but does not eat the treats offered. 12/9/24 FB61 In cat den upon approach, big and chubby with wide eyes and tail curled around feet. She licks her lips and is very scared - however she leans in gently for cheek and chin rubs from within her den. Not yet ready to explore her kennel. She does not eat the treats offered. 12/16/24 FB61 In cat den upon approach, eyes wide, ears tilted and pupils very dilated. She remains frozen in place when offered a catnip toy, treats and when pet gently on the head with the scratcher tool. Nervous girl... needs more time to adjust. 12/20/24 FB79 Inside of her den Brit Brit has wide eyes when i lift the den cover and her ears slightly tilt when i bring in the pointer tool. She tolerates pets but shows no interest in the treats that i toss inside remaining still throughout. 12/22/24 FB79 Inside of her den, Britney Britney has neutral eyes, forward ears and a slightly loose tail when I lift the den cover. Her eyes dilate when I tossed in some treats but she shows no interest or when I insert my hand for her to sniff. She does tolerate pets on her head and on her back with no reaction. 12/27/24 FB79 inside of her den, Britney Britney has wide dilated eyes with a tightly wrap tail and shows no interest in treats. She very slightly leans in for pets with the pointer tool before she turns her body away from me in attempt to avoid more contact. 1/08/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face completely hidden from view. She does not come out when offered treats and I do not push hands on interaction to reduce stress. I leave her some scented felt (feliway and valerian root) before ending the session. 1/10/25 FB79 Inside of her den out of sight, Britney Britney immediately begins to hiss when the kennel door is open as well as when the den cover is lifted for a better view. She continues throughout the whole interaction, but allows me to pet on her head and on her body, although continuing to harshly hiss and not interested in any treats. 1/11/25 FB58 Britney Britney has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. She is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Britney Britney is reported to not do well with other cats and show offensive aggression/bullying behaviors as well as stalk them, and will defecate outside of the litter box when the previous owner is traveling or when the litter box is not clean. There is a chance that should she be the only pet in the home and can have the attention focused on her, she would do much better and if her litter box is cleaned daily, she is less likely to have inappropriate elimination issues. Dynamic in the previous home: "I have three cats, two 7 yo females listed here, one 6 yo male. The cats do not get long and have not gotten along for their entire lives. While I have tried to mitigate them in various ways for years, I’ve reached the point where I think it is best that they are all separated. Britney Britney (tuxedo cat), the oldest, can be a bully. She stalks the other cats and often attacks them. She is a big baby at heart who just wants all the attention, she is not an evil soul and can be incredibly sweet to humans. She has bitten and scratched people before when in defense mode. She is an anxious cat and can behave spitefully at times. She will sometimes poop outside the litter box when I travel for work, or just completely randomly when it is not unclean. I believe her behavior would be completely different if she were in a single pet household. Judas (grey tabby), is just a month younger than Britney Britney, but considerably smaller. She’s very skittish by nature; even as her mom, I am not allowed to pick her up. She loves attention although she can be very aloof and independent. She’s extremely docile and kind to humans when she chooses to be around them. The only time she is combative is to hold her own against bullying and stalking. She would benefit from a life where she is not looking over her shoulder. Judas will not start fights with other cats and could be a member of a multi cat home again under the right circumstances. Both cats are rescues that I adopted as kittens in Florida. They are not related and have never been friendly. A year later, I adopted a third kitten (male) in Florida and Britney Britney’s behavior worsened more over time. He receives a lot of her bullying. He's been given scratches and little cuts to the face on many occasions. I live in an apartment that is not conducive to keeping the cats separated. I travel with increasing frequency for work, and keeping them apart is not possible when I go out of town. I love my cats so much. But between their stressful dynamic and changes in my own life, I don't feel like I can manage this situation anymore and believe they would be better off away from one another. 12/11/24 It appears that as Britney Britney was adjusting to the shelter, she continued to have some litter box accidents, but after the first 5 days was consistently using the litter box appropriately.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Reported to bully the other cats in the home, with the bullying and stalking behaviors increasing when a third cat was added into the home. She actively avoids, hisses, growls, and swats at other cats. She has previously lived with two other cats. She actively avoids, hisses, growls, and swats at dogs. She appears to prefer to be the only pet and would do much better in a home where she can receive all the attention. Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Britney Britney would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Britney Britney is on her den, hidden from view - and cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is removed, she is sitting with a slightly tense face and body, pupils wide and hisses. She is tolerant of touch with the tool and lip licks. Does not eat the treats offered and pick up is not attempted. 12/29/24 Upon re-evaluation, Britney Birney displayed the same behaviors descried the same behaviors descried in her initial assessment above.
