Kodak
Hello, my name is Kodak. My animal id is #225834. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Kodak is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Kodak in the care center has been fearful throughout his staff and generally uncomfortable with staff during interactions. Kodak becomes tense around staff, seeking exit/avoiding staff during interactions and becoming tense when pet despite best efforts to make him comfortable. Medically, Kodak is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners.
My medical notes are...

Summary (6):: 06/06/25: Kodak is lying on his kuranda bed with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He places his front paws up onto the kennel door as handler unlocks it and shows no interest in tossed treats. Handler drops the lead over Kodak's head, and he pulls moderately to the play yard. Kodak takes treats gently from hand and will stop in front of handler and look up at them to solicit treats often. He nudges their treat pouch with his nose several times throughout the session. Kodak will investigate the pool set up in the yard but does not enter. He becomes slightly tense-bodied when handler pets the top of his head, so they discontinue contact and Kodak returns to scenting. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely.
Summary (7):: 5/20/25: Kodak began climbing on kennel door as handler approached. Handler tossed treats to move him away from door and he was leashed with ease as he re-approached. Kodak walked to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. Kodak immediately engaged with a snuffle mat which he worked on for some time, even flipping it over to make sure he had found every last crumb. Kodak's kennel as clean and he relieved himself while in the yard. Kodak was returned to kennel with ease. 5/7 (reassessment): Kodak is lounging in his kuranda bed when a Handler approaches. He comes forward with coaxing from the Handler but does not take treats. The handler attempts to leash him, but Kodak begins dodging and retreating to the back of his kennel; he does come forward with further coaching, but still refuses treats. Once leashed, he walks out of the room, ignoring the other barking dogs, and is brought to the behavior office for a reassessment. Kodak maintains a tense body with a slightly tucked tail as the assessment begins. Once complete, he scurries to the door seeking an exit and is then returned to his kennel without issue. A staff member reported Kodak was warming up to them and had accepted pets. 05/02/25 (Assessment Note): Kodak walks up to the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease, though he will cower and display raised hackles as the leash is placed over his head. While walking to the assessment room, Kodak presents a tucked tail and pinned-back ears, appearing very fearful. Once inside the room, he continues to show signs of stress seeking the exit, pacing, and lip licking. Despite his fearful demeanor, Kodak will take treats gently from the handler. (See behavior assessment for more information.) 05/02/25 (playgroup): Kodak is curled up on his kuranda bed at the back of kennel with a trembling frame as handler approaches. Handler kneels down and speaks to him with a soft frame. Kodak slowly approaches, with a low, trembling frame and tucked tail. He is lured through the lead with treats and slowly exits kennel. Kodak shows anxiousness on lead and will circle handler on the walk up to playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). He will slowly approach a second handler and sniff them lightly before walking away. Kodak pulls hard on the walk back to the shelter. Kodak becomes slightly tense and will stop and look back at the dog walking on the sidewalk behind him. Handler uses light directional leash pressure and a soft voice to redirect him forward. Kodak is returned to kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Kodak's high level of fearfulness in care, we recommend he be placed in an adult-only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control/Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: In his prior home, Kodak is noted to take treats roughly and jump up non-stop. Training should focus on teaching him basic manners and impulse control through positive reinforcement, such as rewarding calm behavior and using consistent cues. Additionally, training should address mouthiness by teaching him to take treats gently and improving his bite inhibition. Please see the handout on Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control/Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition. Fearful/Anxiety: In his prior home, Kodak would alert bark when meeting new people, preferring a slow approach. Once comfortable, he is playful, friendly, and outgoing. In the care center, Kodak has shown fearful behaviors such as whale eyes, tail tucked, and seeking an exit. Training should focus on building his confidence through gradual exposure to new people and environments, using positive reinforcement to create positive associations and reduce anxiety. Please see the handout on decompression period and generalized anxiety. Strength/Leash Pulling: In his prior home, Kodak is noted to pull hard on the leash during walks. Training should involve teaching him proper leash manners through techniques like loose-leash walking, using rewards for walking calmly beside the handler, and consistent practice to reduce pulling. Please see the handout on Strength/Leash Pulling.
