Animal Profile

Kiri

Hello, my name is Kiri. My animal id is #240536. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 10/30/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Kiri is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Kiri is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he appears wary of human contact. While he may attempt to avoid interactions initially, he does allow pets and touch. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Some cats make shelter life look so easy and for others there's a visible effort as they try to figure things out. Kiri came to us from a home with many other cats when their guardian was hospitalized and he fits in the latter group. Looking out at Adoptions, Kiri puts so much thought into it but is unsure about where he fits except he knows that he would really like to fit in somewhere. Gallantly trying to meet us half way, Kiri politely and adorably sniffs the air when we offer treats and then eats the ones that are closest to him. Though Kiri likes to keep one eye on us while he does this, we've been working on helping him to build positive associations with people since it's likely our Kiri hasn't had many chances to meet new ones. Asking for a forever family may be a big ask but Kiri's really hoping you'll give him the time to hear him out.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Kiri was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Kiri previously lived in a home with 40+ cats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/4/25 FB20 Kiri was up at the top of his portal laying down. He hisses softly on approach and sniffs scratcher tool before hissing again. I talk softly to him and offer crunchy treats and a catnip mouse before ending interaction. 11/7/25 FB61 Lying in back of kennel, body and face tense with his tail wrapped around his body. He sniffs the air when offered treats and eats the ones closest to him while maintaining eye contact with me. When I attempt petting with the scratcher tool he flattens his ears and hisses. Will continue to build positive associations! 11/9/25 Today, Kiri displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. 11/11/25 FB58 Laying at the back of the cage with a low and tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, and ears tilted. He hisses as the cage door is opened and as the assessor speaks to him softly, occasionally slow blinking. He consistently hisses at any movements but will eat the dry treats lightly tossed towards him, as well as squeeze up in a tray that is pushed closer to him. Still remains very tense and wary throughout interaction. 11/15/25 FB06 Laying at the back with a tense face, eyes and body. Offered squeeze up in a tray that he ate. Attempting petting with the scratcher, Kiri hissed and growled. As I closed the door he continued to growl. 11/18/25 FB20 Kiri is in his bed with flattened ears. He low growls on approach but then sniffs scratcher tool and licks squeeze up. He low growls when tool is slightly moved, speak softly to him as he eats. When tool is pulled away he hisses softly. I leave a tray of squeeze up for him and he watches carefully as I set it in front of him. A few minutes later I peek under his cover and he has gotten up to eat. He looks at me and softly hisses again. 11/20/25 FB79 Kiri displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. 11/22/25 FB06 Kiri was tucked behind his bed with a tense face, flat ears hissing and growling. As I opened the door his ears flatten more as he continues to hiss and growl. As I offered him the scratcher he has no interest and ducks his head down behind the bed. He tolerates petting on his head and body, still growling, staring at the scratcher with wide eyes. I left him with some squeeze up after our interaction. 12/05/25 FB61 Huddled in box, body and face tense. He tolerates all petting while flinching, lowering himself further and flattening his ears. He does not react to the squeeze-ups or the catnip toy offered. He seeks comfort from the other cats in the room and is tolerant and respectful. 12/06/25 FB20 Kiri is showing similar behaviors to the previous enrichment note. 12/08/25 FB61 Lying under hiding spot, body and face tense. He remains frozen when pet with the scratcher tool and he remains too focused on me to engage with the treats or toy offered. He is tolerant of the other cats and was relaxing in a space alone today. ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Kiri came from a home with about 40+ other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Kiri would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. Kiri may benefit from being in a home with another, friendly, and appropriately socialized cat from whom he can learn behaviors and have interactions with humans modeled by, to help him gain confidence and comfort in a new environment

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 11/2/25 Kiri is on the top part of the kennel, perched with tucked paws, forward ears and wide eyes; when the assessor opens the kennel door Kiri's breathing begins to increase as he lip licks, and his eyes dilate. When the assessor slowly brings in a tool for Kiri to sniff he immediately hisses while continuing to lip lick and back himself into the corner, tightening his tail around his body. When the assessor brings the tool back in with some treats, he leans into sniff, but hiss when the tool is brought close to his face for petting. He starts too low growl/grumble and pet down and around his body as he turns around to sniff the tool and continues to harshly hiss while pet on his chin and cheeks as well as his head. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 12/2/25 Up9on re-eval, Kiri has been moved to the Free-Roam Room and has been doing well being co-housed with the other cats. After being moved into this room, he no longer hisses when approached but remains tense and wary of interactions. On approach, he is laying under one of the furniture pieces with a tense face and body but allows touch with the scratcher tool. As the furniture is moved, he tenses and pulls his limbs in under him to form a tight ball before running with a low body into the large hide and into a box. When the assessor slides the hide in order to see him in the box, he is tightly loafed and looks up at the assessor with wide eyes. The assessor then offers their hand, and he is tolerant of pets along his head and body repeatedly with a flat hand and a slow and consistent pet. There is no escalation or hissing. Pick up is not attempted.
