At-Risk Animals

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Peas
Peas is currently at risk for behavior reasons. Peas has displayed dog reactivity during her stay at the care center, both in and out of kennel. She will often turn towards handlers after reacting jumping on them and mouthing them. When greeting dogs at the gate, Peas will be stiff bodied and when off leash with a decoy dog, she bites at the dogs face. With staff, Peas has been soft and social, often seeking attention and accepting touch. Medically, Peas has an ocular abnormality.

Ms. Valentine

Ms. Valentine is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Valentine was returned from her trial adoption due to a bite incident in the home. Valentine jumped over a baby gate to greet the trial adopter at the same time as the resident dog ran by. Valentine lunged and bit the small dog causing two scratches on the dogs stomach, one scratch on the right hind leg, and one puncture on the right hind leg. Despite our best efforts at making her comfortable, during her stay in the care center Valentine has been observed to be hard barking at the kennel door, vocalizing persistently and pawing at the transfer door. Medically Valentine is apparently healthy.

Byzantium

Reserved
Byzantium is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Byzantium is a sweet girl who has not been thriving at the care center. She has severe dental disease and low blood protein levels. Byzantium has been eating wet food with a very good appetite, but has continued losing weight here. Byzantium needs dental care and possible work up for intestinal disease. This work up should include an abdominal ultrasound. Byzantium can thrive outside of the shelter environment with some treatment and special attention.

Donut
Donut is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. When first arriving at the care center, Donut was fearful, remaining at the back of his kennel, shaking and moving slowly throughout the care center. However, he has opened up tremendously, often seeking handler attention by leaning in and remaining near handlers. He has also become more reactive over time, hard barking and pulling towards dogs, people and even his own reflection. Sometimes, he will then turn to handlers, jump on them or mouth their hands and sleeves. It is reported that Donut will 'scavenge' on the street grabbing twigs, feces and even a baby pacifier in his mouth. Donut is highly treat motivated and most of these behaviors can be redirected at least momentarily. Medically, Donut has demodicosis, otitis externa and is underweight.

Tola
Tola is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Tola is a friendly senior cat. We have assessed that Tola is diabetic and have started Tola on a treatment plan; she also has dental disease and an enlarged liver. Tola will need daily maintenance with her medical condition and further follow up with outside vet care. Tola has allowed all handling and seeks attention during their exams.

Axel
Axel is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Axel has been highly anxious at the care center, panting, zig zagging on walks and flipping his water bowl in kennel. He also becomes easily aroused, jumping onto handlers with a tense posture and turning quickly towards touch. Axel has begun training sessions with the staff trainer and has been receptive, though is easily distracted by environmental factors such as noises. Medically, Axel is apparently healthy.

Little Moohco
Little Moocho is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Brock
Brock has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. We has a very large bladder stone that has been present for years, and he has developed pneumonia further delaying his surgical treatment. His appetite is low and he has lost weight. He needs care and attention that we cannot provide.

Fendi
Fendi is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Fendi's previous owner states that he is sensitive when handled, and was involved in a bite incident in his previous home due to this touch sensitivity. During his stay in the care center Fendi has been observed to be fearful, noted to become tense and hard stare towards handlers during contact and to lip lick when picked up. Medically Fendi has dental disease and recently recovered from CIRDC.

Uzzy
Uzzy is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Uzzy has been fearful at the care center, avoiding interaction and becoming tense and whale eyeing during an assessment. He has at times been difficult to leash, trying to push out of the kennel and retreating when leash is presented. In one instance, he escaped his kennel and was loose in the hallway, biting the handlers hand when they went to re-leash him. The bite resulted in two puncture wounds. He has also displayed some resource guarding, becoming tense and growling when staff attempted to remove treats off the ground near him. Medically, Uzzy has CIRDC.

Shadow Xl
Shadow XL has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is very overweight and has difficulty walking. He also has been drinking a lot and urinating a lot and his blood work suggest that maybe he has over active adrenal glands (Cushing's disease). He needs care and attention and diagnostic tests that we cannot provide.

King Bubblegum

King Bubblegum is at risk due to behavioral reasons. King has been observed to be fearful during his stay at the care center. Noted to have a tense body, whale eye, and be avoidant of the handler. During his medical exam King was observed to escalate to vocalizing and baring teeth when approached. While outside with handlers King has been observed to sniff. Medically King has CIRDC and is overweight.

T-Rex is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Neo
Neo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. In his previous home Neo is reported to have a multiple bite history. Neo's previous owner states that he is very mouthie and will jump up and mouth people on their arms and hands, sometimes with hard pressure. The most recent bite incident, Neo was jumping up on the owner and mouthing them. Another person when to assist with getting Neo off them. They grabbed his collar, Neo then redirected onto the person and bit them on the arm. This bite was a bite and release that left a puncture that bled. Due to his multiple bite history Neo has not been handled by staff during his stay. Medically Neo is apparently healthy.

Dionysus
Dionysus is at risk due to behavioral reasons. He has been observed to be highly kennel reactive especially when reentering the kennel room. Dionysus has been observed to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room while snapping at them. After returning to kennel Dionysus spins and then snaps at the handler. While in the yard Dionysus has also been observed to fixate on other dogs. While out with handlers Dionysus has been observed to engage with toys and be receptive to treats. Medically Dionysus is apparently healthy.

Shawna is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of frustration and overstimulation. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Puppuccino

Puppuccino is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Puppuccino has been struggling to acclimate to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Puppuccino has been thrashing on leash, refusing to go back into kennel or walk having to be coaxed by one or more staff members back inside. Puppuccino is social with select staff, but struggling to acclimate. Medically, apparently healthy.

Nala
Nala is at risk due to behavior concerns displayed in care. Nala in the care center has shown a significant amount of resource guarding, growling and snapping during her toy guarding portion of her handling assessment. The same behavior was noted in her previous home. Nala is social with staff and enjoys receiving pets. Owner reported Nala can be fearful at times but once comfortable is affectionate. Medically, Nala has Dermatitis and Dental Disease

Pito
Pito is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Pito is a senior cat that we diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He will need life-long medication and follow up vet visits to manage this disease. Behaviorally, he is timid, but has allowed handling.

Mocha
Mocha is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Maxwell is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Maxwell has not acclimated well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Maxwell has began to thrash, alligator roll and bite at the leash in attempts to handle him, making it difficult to handle him safely. Medically, Maxwell has otitis externa.

Mojito is on the at-risk list to behavior concerns. Mojito in care has been deteriorating in care and not acclimating well to the shelter environment. Mojito has been rebounding off his kennel walls, at times hitting himself, and is unable to settle. Mojito is social with staff but struggling to acclimate to the care center environment. Medically, Mojito is healthy.
