Animal Profile

Jasmine

Hello, my name is Jasmine. My animal id is #196415. I am a female tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 6 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/7/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Jasmine is currently on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Jasmine has began to deteriorate in care despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Jasmine has began to leash bite intensely in her kennel when attempting to bring her out for her walks, she begins to tug intensely and has to be coaxed with a toy in order to be removed from kennel, make it difficult to walk her safely in the care center. Jasmine has also began to kennel fight with neighboring dogs when exiting kennel, but is very social with staff. Medically, Jasmine has a mass and is overweight.

My foster writes: Meet Jasmine, a delightful 5-year-old bundle of energy and joy! This spirited pup loves to stay active and is always ready for a game of fetch with her favorite red ball. Jasmine's enthusiasm is contagious, making her the perfect companion for someone who enjoys an active lifestyle. Jasmine has a sweet and friendly nature, especially when meeting new people. Her gentle demeanor and wagging tail make her an instant favorite with everyone she encounters. Whether she's playing in the yard or cuddling up after a day of fun, Jasmine's loving personality shines through. Jasmine would do best in a home without cats or other dogs, as she prefers to be the center of attention. If you're looking for a lively and affectionate furry friend who will keep you on your toes and fill your days with love and laughter, Jasmine is the perfect match for you! What my friends at ACC say about me: I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. Please check here for updated adoption hours. A volunteer writes: Jasmine is an enthusiastic and loving dog who is an absolute pleasure to spend time with. She was a perfect guest on Boroughbreak to my apartment last week. She was eager to explore my apartment, but able to entertain herself with toys while I worked from home. We spent some time in the backyard, where she showed off her fetch and treat-catching skills, as well as her knowledge of "sit" and "paw". We then headed off to the park, where her excellent leash manners were apparent; while she did get excited when she spotted a squirrel, she was friendly to everyone she met and unfazed by bicycles, people, and other dogs. Jasmine has a joy for life that's apparent from her big smile to her ever-wagging tail, and she's going to bring so much love and happiness to her next person or family!

Date of intake:: 4/7/2024

Summary:: easily leashed, tightly tucked tail, reluctant to enter kennel, huff and bark at another dog

Date of initial:: 4/9/2024

Summary:: social, attention seeking, wiggly, jumpy

ENERGY LEVEL:: Her previous owners describe Jasmine as a high-energy dog. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may need guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy. Jasmine will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to Jasmine's initial fearfulness, lack of manners, and anxiety, we recommend a home without young children at this time. No cats- We recommend she be placed in a home without cats/ Small animals.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor impulse control: Jasmine jumps up persistently when seeking attention and treats from handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful: Jasmine was initially fearful during her medical exam but warmed up quickly. If she does show fearful behavior in a future home it is important to always go slow and give Jasmine the option to walk away from any social interaction. She should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Jasmine has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, screeching towards them and growling. Jasmine may need positive reinforcement, reward reward-based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-biting- Jasmine has displayed leash-biting behavior in care.
