Seven
Hello, my name is Seven . My animal id is #210566. I am a female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/21/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSeven is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center. She is now displaying signs of [petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation, etc.]. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. Seven is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. A volunteer writes: We've learned that Seven is not a fan of meeting new people. She'll try to keep to herself, hiding or tucking herself into a ball so as not to make any waves. Seven will share a hiss in lieu of hello, but really if we could just pretend we didn't see her, that's fine. Although, if we could just leave the treats we brought, that's more than fine. She says right outside her den is perfect. Anyway, and as expected, the Care Center, with our steady stream of new people and noises, hasn't been the best fit for Seven. She'll raise her paws in pleas to ask for space but doesn't want to make a big fuss. Seven is looking for a patient home where she will have the time and space to get her bearings. She's been in search of a safe place to land since her person came into some housing issues and we know the perfect family is out there for her.

For a New Family to Know: Seven is a friendly cat who likes to be a lazy couch potato. She prefers contact on her own terms. Independent gal who loves to cuddle to sleep. Enjoys laying on soft surfaces and leather couches. Churu treats are her favorite.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Seven was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/28/24 FB47 Lying on the back on top of the den, looking concerned when spoken too, crouched, but allows approach with scratcher tool and sniffs treats and then catnip but pulls back and hisses when petting is attempted. 9/29/24 Vol. Resting on top of den, behind a Shoreline cover. Remained in place as I chatted to him, but did not return slow blinks and started to lip lick so I left him alone. 10/7/24 FB47 Improving, might be level 3 soon. On the den, alert, sniffs treats offered on scratcher tool, then allows some petting with the tool, a little wary, noes touched my finger and briefly allows a cheek rub before raising a paw to possible swat. 10/10/24 ACFR Seven was on top of the den resting in a loaf position. Greeted and retuned with two slow blinks, but backed up when the scratcher tool came close to him. He inched further back on to the den with ears alert and tarted to softly bat/swat at the tool. 10/11/24 FB26 Resting on top of the den. Alert with soft eyes. Ears relaxed and forward. Treats were offered but she shows no interest. When moving close with the scratcher tool she began to sit upright and slowly withdraw lifting up paw preventing contact. Left alone to reduce stress. 10/18/24 FB26 By the front of the kennel scanning the room upon approach. On alert with eyes at rest, normal. When attempting to pet along the head she soft swats with no claws. She remains in seated position and continues to soft swat. When she looked away, a pet along the head was sneaked in but she quickly stressed meowed. Ended to avoid any possible escalation. 11/2/24 FB47 Seven was at the front eating wet food., Allowed approach with the scratcher tool, sniffed it, and when petting was attempted, raise the paws if to swat. 11/14/24 ACFR At the front of the den upon approach, observing me with a neutral body. Upon attempting to pet, she bats at my hand playfully initially without claws but escalates quickly to rough play and using claws. She is redirected with a feather toy and enthusiastically engages in play with it.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow,Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Calm,Curious,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Rough play,Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Seven should be gradually introduced to her new home, starting in a small room like a bathroom, equipped with food, litter, and water. Given her fearful behaviors observed at the Care Center and the likelihood that she will hide, it's important to take things slow. Spend time interacting with her in this room until she shows enough confidence for the next introduction. Consult an adoption counselor for additional methods to help with her acclimation to the home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Assessment on 09.25.2024 Seven was resting inside the den upon approach. Alert with eyes at rest, normal. Ears erect and forward. She was curious when offered treats watching from afar through the side portal door. When attempting to make contact with the scratcher tool for petting she sniffs and began to hiss. She slowly retreats, avoiding contact when moving close. Ended to reduce stress. Retest on 11/1/24: Seven was sitting upright and appeared alert with neutral eyes. She engaged positively, accepting offered treats and allowing pets. However, when briefly picked up, she expressed stress with meows. After some additional head strokes, she hissed, patted, and nipped with mild to moderate pressure. Throughout, she maintained her position, watching her surroundings attentively. Seven is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
