Raven
Hello, my name is Raven. My animal id is #216163. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/8/2024.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormRaven is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Raven arrived to the care center after a bite with the finder. Raven bit and held the finder on the right hand leaving two puncture wounds, the finder didn't seek medical attention. Raven did have multiple other bite incident with the finder. In the care center, Raven is unable to be handled as she is growling, snapping, baring teeth and hard barking when attempting to leash. While leashed she flails and vocalizes. Medically Raven is apparently healthy.

We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to multiple bite history we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Raven is reported to hover, become tense, growl, hard bark, snap, and attempt to bite if someone attempts to touch an item in his possession or approach him. These items may include toys, treats, food, and other objects. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Raven's possession without safely trading for an item of greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer is highly recommended to aid in safely managing this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling Sensitivity: Raven has reported to snap and bite after his finder touched his harness. He will also hard bark and growl when his paws are touched, when restrained, and when his collar is touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Raven to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Raven has been observed to growl towards handlers when approached. Raven's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl when startled. It is important to move slowly with Raven, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Raven's finder states that he is anxious in the home. If Raven displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Raven's finder states that he will growl, hard bark, snap and attempt to bite when seeing children, small animals, and dogs while on leash. Raven will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Raven's finder states that he will jump up and bite/chew the leash during walks. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
