Fudge
Hello, my name is Fudge . My animal id is #215873. I am a male chocolate dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/2/2024.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormFudge is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Fudge initially presented as fearful during the beginning of his stay in care. He gave clear warnings when uncomfortable but did escalate to higher level warnings when attempting to remove him from his kennel - baring teeth, growling, snapping. With a slow approach and the use of high-value treats, Fudge began to warm up and would engage with playing with toys, more tolerant of leashing, and solicited attention from select handlers and staff. Fudge continues to display behaviors similar to those of unfamiliar staff, strangers, and other dogs on walks. He has escalated to lunging, hard barking, and growling. He can sometimes be difficult to walk due to his size and persistence. Medically, Fudge has dental disease and is cryptorchid.

Fudge came to the care center as a stray due to this his history is unknown. In the care center, his behavior reflects his discomfort in the kennel environment and wariness of unfamiliar people and stimuli. Upon approach, Fudge often greets handlers with a stiff frame, whale eyes, or avoidance behavior. He displays behaviors such as growling, baring teeth, or snap when leashing is attempted. Despite these reactions, Fudge has shown willingness to follow handlers once leashed and appears to settle somewhat in outdoor environments, where he spends time exploring and scenting with minimal engagement. When approached calmly and with high-value treats, he has begun to build trust, taking food gently and showing brief moments of relaxation. Fudge's behavior suggests he would benefit from a structured, patient environment outside of the care center, where his fear-based behaviors can be addressed with positive reinforcement, decompression, and confidence-building exercises. He is avabile for rescue through a New Hope partner.

The handler sees Fudge and another dog lunging and hard barking at one another as they pass each other. The staff member walking Fudge has some difficulty walking him past the other dog due to Fudge's size and persistence. 12/08/24 (PM) Fudge is standing neutrally in front of his kennel door with a relaxed frame. Fudge will come forward and take treats when administered, taking treats gently in the process. The handler will feed the loop of the lead onto Fudge during the process and the handler is successful.
