At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Caramel

Caramel is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Carmel is seen begin leash biting during handling and is at times unable to be refocused, or having to refocused constantly. Also, she lowers her body and stopped moving when being brought to her kennel refusing to enter back into kennel, making it difficult to walk her safely at times. Caramel is social with staff and has played with many other dogs in care, but is struggling in the care center. Medically, Caramel is apparently healthy.

Funk Master Flash

Funk Master Flash is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. WHile he has struggled to adjust to the shelter setting, he previously tolerated some touch and interaction with behavior staff. He is now displaying signs of more significant signs of Fearfully Defensive Behaviors due to his high levels of FAS. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to decompress at his own pace and approach on his own terms so as to not feel pressured or cornered - and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Pebbles is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Springtime is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is intelligent and playful and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. He does display social behaviors but appears conflicted in care, not consistently allowing interaction and escalating to swatting, hissing, and lunging when he is overstimulated. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language and overstimulation and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid further scratch incidents.

Sterling

Sterling is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in his previous foster homes. In his prior foster homes, he is noted to be friendly and affectionate; they note that Sterling loves to cuddle. He was reported to have bitten the resident cat in one of his previous foster homes after he was able to escape his crate. The cat was bitten on the leg when trying to escape, and the foster on their right hand when trying to separate the animals. This was reported to be a bite and release that did break skin and draw blood. The foster parent and the cat went to receive medical attention. Medically, Sterling has Anemia, Cause Unspecified, Cryptorchid, Dental Disease , Diarrhea,Otitis Externa.

Callie

Callie is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Callie is a nervous but friendly cat who was surrendered due to a change in her owners living situation. Callie has had intermittent diarrhea, vomiting, and decreased appetite while in our care. It has been determined that Callie has infiltrative bowel disease, but the underlying cause is unknown at this time. Callie will need follow up diagnostics with an outside veterinarian to help determine the cause of her bowel disease, and will likely need medication long term to manage it. Callie has allowed all handling during their exams and did well in her previous foster home in terms of her behavior.

Oren

Oren is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Upon arriving as a stray, Oren was noted to be fearful but did allow handling. During his handling assessment Oren remained tense however approached staff with coaxing, tolerated contact, was treat receptive. Unfortunately, Oren has become increasingly kennel reactive when being taken out for walks. Oren has been observed to pull hard towards kennel and pushing off walls to kennel fight. Medically, Oren is noted to be underweight but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Yosemite is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Chase

Chase is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Chase a high level of kennel stress behaviors including repeatedly launching to the top of his kennel, springing off kennel walls, persistent jumping, heavy panting, and pulling so intensely on walks that he vomited multiple times. He has also shown fixation toward birds and small dogs while outside. Chase is social and affectionate with staff and volunteers, but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Chase is slightly underweight.

Casserole

Casserole is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Casserole displays high arousal behaviors including persistent leash biting, jumping at the kennel door, heavy panting, hard pulling on leash, and fixation on dogs during walks. He often requires spray cheese to safely remove him from his kennel due to his leash biting. Casserole is social with familiar handlers, engages with enrichment items, and is able to settle in lower stimulation environments but is struggling in the care center. Medically, Casserole is Overweight.

Fluffy

Recommend at risk list for medical reasons. Fluffy is a 10 year old cat with diabetes and obesity. He will need insulin administration twice daily and regular veterinary visits for diabetes follow-up. Behaviorally, Fluffy has been very interaction and loves petting.

Ellie

Ellie is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in her previous home and in the care center. In Ellie's previous home, Ellie had an incident where she lunged at a small dog and pinned it to the ground, requiring intervention to get away from the small dog. Ellie was able to disengage from the situation when redirected with a treat after several attempts. Ellie also in the care center has been starting to kennel fighting leaving the kennel room, making it difficult to walk her safely at times. Ellie is in the care center and social and affectionate with staff. Medically, Ellie is apparently healthy.

Casanova

Casanova is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Casanova arrived at the Care Center as a stray. Upon intake Casanova was reported to be fearful by police however allowed handling by ACC staff. During his handling assessment Casanova approached handlers readily and allowed contact. Casanova has shown intense resource guarding tendencies while in care. Casanova was reported to hover over his food while in kennel, growl, and muzzle punch the kennel door when staff approach. Additionally Casanova has shown a decreasing threshold for arousal, when a handler attempted do refocus Casanova away from a dog by pressing a squeaker toy (the toy was in a treat pouch), Casanova jumped and grabbed hold of the handler's treat pouch, hard leash pressure had to be used to get him to let go. When on walks and not over threshold Casanova continues to be treat receptive and allow contact. Medically, Casanova is noted to have dental disease and undetermined allergies.

Mikey

Mikey is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Mikey has been sociable during most interactions: loose bodied, leaning into petting along his body after he has chosen to solicit - he has presented with sensitivity around his neck. Mikey had escalated to growling and snapping during attempts to collar him for a handling assessment and intermittently when clipping leads to return him to the kennel. Medically, Mikey has alopecia, dental disease, pyoderma, and an ear infection.

Kwik

Kwik is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Upon his arrival Kwik was noted to be highly social with staff during his handling assessment. Unfortunately, Kwik has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Noted to snarl, pull hard and fixate on other dogs while in the yard. In one instance when handlers attempt to switch Kwik to a slip lead he is noted to jump up with an open mouth and snap. In the kennel room, is observed to pull hard towards the other dogs while barking. With handlers, Kwik has a loose body and climbs up next to them on the bench, soliciting contact. Medically Kwik is apparently healthy.

Phantom

Phantom is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Phantom arrived at the Care Center as a stray with limited history. Phantom was reported to bite two dogs however the details of the incident are very vague. While in care Phantom has shown on-leash reactivity; he has been observed to become tense, growl, and pull hard towards dogs. With staff, Phantom was initially aloof. With time Phantom has become social with handlers, becomes loose and wiggly during contact and is now treat receptive. Medically, Phantom has alopecia, dental disease, and has lameness in the left front leg.

Brown

Brown is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care, Brown was initially observed to be fearful. Noted to maintain his distance from handlers and balk while on leash. Over time Brown has warmed up to handlers and will seek contact and accept pets on his back and head. Recently Brown has been observed to bite and tug the leash into kennel. This behavior has not been able to be redirected easily. He has also been noted to be kennel reactive and will pull towards the other dogs while on leash. Medically, Brown has dental disease.

Cozine

Cozine is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Cozine has shown the potential for sociable behaviors with handlers, but quickly becomes conflicted. He is easy to remove from the kennel, briefly leans into petting, but flinches when touched. Cozine has escalated to hard barking, growling, and hard staring at handlers. During walks, he has stopped and hard stared at other dogs, but has been receptive to being redirected with treats. Medically, Cozine has CIRDC, dermatitis, and alopecia.
