Date of intake:: 11/23/2024
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history
Date of assessment:: 11/25/2024
Summary:: When brought into the assessment room Sweet Sister Francis remained tense and fearful. Heavily panting with a tense body and maintaining her distance from the handler. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Francis is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: 12/7/24: Sweet Sister Frances greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and wagging tail. Off leash she is bouncy and play bows.
Summary (6):: 12/13/24: Sweet sister Francis is reported to sprint followed by a play bow frequently on walks. 12/7/24: Sweet Sister Francis is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins hard barking at handler as they begin unlocking her kennel door. She begins to quickly muzzle punch the kennel door where handlers knee is being held to keep the door secure all while continuing to hard bark. Handler produces treats to distract her but she ignores them and continues to lunge at the door and again muzzle punches the door in areas handlers hand is next to. Handler produces the leash and slowly introduces it into the kennel, Francis looks at it briefly before continuing to bark at handler. She begins retreating back as handler attempts to leash, she continues to approach intermittently and quickly moves toward handlers hand and the leash, handler moves his hand out of the way each time. She is finally leashed after a while and brought to the yard for a dog on dog interaction. Along the way Francis looks back at handler and walks directly in front of handler, pulling moderately. During her interaction she is stiff and continues to turn to look at handler even when playing with other dogs. She is brought back inside and returned to kennel without further issue. 11/29/24: While out in the yard with an ACS, Francis begins seeking exit and begins frantically pulling back to the building. Due to her being next to a TDO who needed to be cleaned she needed to remain outside for a bit longer, however she begins growling when she hears a loud noise. A staff member came to assist and placed a second leash on her precautionarily and waited with her for her kennel to be finished. At this point she does not take treats and does not respond to toys/squeakers. She will cower or flinch when she hears a startling noise but allows handlers to clip her. She is returned without further issue after a while
Summary (7):: 11/26/24- Sweet sister Francis is laying down in her kennel with a neutral body, she shies away her head away when being leashed and after a couple attempts she was finally leashed. She was taken for a street walk. She is hypervigilant (looking around, spinning when handler stops walking, heavy panting). When people passed her she would walk closer to handler, when she saw another dog she had no reaction and was pacing back and forth near handler. She was offered treats but showed no interest in them. She was taken for her assessment, when a drag line was put on and handler went to remove their lead Francis stared at handler while also lowering their head away from them. Handler had to go slowly and was able to remove it. She was aloof with handlers and would avoid any handler. Handler slowly releashed her and slowly removed her drag line. She was returned to her kennel without issue. 11/25/24: Sweet Sister Francis is laying down on the left side of her kennel with whale eyes as handler approaches. She does not come to the front for treats, or with baby voice. She is trembling and dodging the leash. Handler has to use hook and reach far back to leash her. She is brought out to the street. She is quite anxious and frantic, pacing back and forth, darting in all directions, shaking, and heavily panting. She remains close to handler at first, but softens a bit. She begins to walk slightly in front of handler but looks back every couple seconds. Sweet Sister Francis is observed to be sound sensitive as she flinches and runs away when a loud sound happens on the street. At one point, a loud bus drives by and she head whips towards handlers thigh/knee. She is brought into Behavior Room for an assessment. She remains frantic, continues to pace, heavily pant, lean away, whale eye, and shake during interaction. When assessor attempts to pet, her mouth closes, face stiffens, and she whale eyes up toward assessor/their hand. Assessment is not complete and she is brought back to kennel. She scurries in.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sweet Sister Francis so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high levels of fear we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Francis has been observed to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to maintain her distance from handlers with a tense body. It is important to always go slow and give Francis the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Francis would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
