Coco
Hello, my name is Coco. My animal id is #213291. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/28/2024.
Coco is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Coco has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Pulling hard towards them with a tense body, lunging and growling. This behavior is not able to be easily redirected. Coco is reported to have a multiple bite history with dogs. With handlers Coco is observed to be social. Medically, Coco is overweight and has a mass near her anus that is a concern. Coco will need further testing and attention that we are unable to provide in-shelter.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I need a home without cats or small animals. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary (7):: 12/11/24: Coco is barking in her pop up crate as handler uncovers the crate and unlatches it. She is leashed using a treat as a lure. She comes out easily walking past other dogs reacting in their kennels or pop up crates. She is walked down the stairs where she moves slowly and needs encouragements and treats. She is walked on the street where she checks in often with handler. When returning to kennel she lunges and growls towards a reactive dog in a pop up crate. Handler uses treats to get her back into her kennel by tossing them on the ground ahead of her. 11/25/24: Coco is down with a soft body when handler approaches her pop up crate, she is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. She sees another dog and fixates on them, pulling hard toward them with a tense body. Handler has to present a treat in front of her face to get her attention as she doesn't respond when being called. She follows handler and they have to continuously feed treats to keep her attention. She has a moderate pull and sniffs around. She has no reaction to people passing her. She allows handler to pet her chin, neck and back. Handler presented a treat, when they held it for too long Coco did take the treat hard. She again saw another dog when returning to the building and she again pulled towards them with a tense body. Handler utilized treats to get her attention which she followed them. She was easily clipped, when returning her to her pop up crate she pulled hard towards a kennel with a small dog in it and barked at them. Handler shortened her leash and tossed treats into her pop up, she followed them. Leash was removed without further issue. 10/29/24: Coco is laying down on her kuranda bed with a soft body when handler approaches her kennel. She slowly gets up when handler unlocks her door and she is easily leashed. She is taken for a street walk, she walks on a loose leash while exploring/ sniffing various spots. She is aloof with handler but gently takes treats. She is taken for her assessment where she slightly warms up to handlers and becomes more social. She lays down after a while with a soft body. She releashed and returned to kennel without issue. Previous stay at ACC: 5/23/20: Coco spends awhile in the Behavior Room due to being reported as extremely anxious in kennel while housed in Vet Services. She walks around the room, pacing anxiously and heavily breathing. She takes some treats and will approach handlers occasionally, wagging her tail when being pet or spoken to. After a long while, she eventually calms and lays down for the remainder of the interaction.

Date of initial:: 11/1/2024
Summary:: Allows all handling for exam while eating cheese. Tense for abdominal palpation
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Coco so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a multiple bite history towards dogs we recommend an adult only home. Single pet home/ No Dog Parks: Due to multiple bites reported towards dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Bite History (Dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on bite history and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Coco has been observed to hard bark, growl, and lunge towards other dogs while on leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Coco will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
