Nevada
Hello, my name is Nevada . My animal id is #234649. I am a male gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 8/19/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.
Nevada is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center. He continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful cat adjust to strangers and new environments.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Nevada was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/25/25 FB61 Lying in hidey box, completely covered by his blankies. When I lift his towels he burrows further inside, ears tilted and pupils very dilated. I do not push petting today, not out of fear or escalation but to reduce stress as he is obviously very fearful. I speak to him softly and leave him some treats which he does not eat immediately. Hopefully he explores the offerings later when the room is quiet and empty. Needs more time. 09/02/25 FB58 Sitting in his den with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He backs away from the tool, I am able to pet for a second before he darts out of the den and onto the shelf. Added to Gaba list. 9/4/25 FB79 Nevada constantly displayed avoidant and fearful behaviors when entering her kennel. She darts from her den onto the top part of her kennel with a low hunched body and wide/dilated eyes. She doesn't allow any contact with the tool and continues to dart back and forth to avoid any contact.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Nevada was in his hidey box as the assessor approached, completely covered by linens. Nevada did not respond when spoken to and he remained hidden and frozen as the kennel door opened. The assessor lifts his towel and sees that he is crouched down low with his tail curled around him and his ears tilted. Nevada slow-blinks and shifts his weight and he tolerates petting along his head and neck while burrowing deeper into his blankets to avoid further touch. The assessor uncovers him again and this time when he's pet along the lower back he retreats onto his perch and begins trembling. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Nevada tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
