At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. At-Risk Animals

Cedar

Cedar is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Cedar was initially brought into care as a stray. Upon intake, Cedar was growling and hard-barked at handlers. In the care center, Cedar has displayed social behaviors with select familiar staff but has displayed defensive warnings (growling, hard barking) with unfamiliar staff and strangers. He also has a history of showing social arousal with staff where he would leash bite, mouth, and grab staff shirts during his first stay but was able to be redirected and would carry a toy to discourage his mouthing. In the kennel, he displayed a flush face, heavy panting, jumping on his kennel door, pulling hard at times during walks, eyes becoming red. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment, Cedar is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Cedar is currently healthy.

Mikey

Mikey is on the at risk list due to behavior concerns. Mikey in care has been observed in care to hard bark and lunge at other dogs passing her kennel, and will begin to pace and heavy pant as dogs pass her kennel throughout the day. Mikey has also displayed hard barking and lunging while on leash, and when being retrained has redirected onto a staff member grabbing there sleeve. Medically, Mikey is currently healthy.

King

King has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He has a severe ear disease that may need surgical intervention. We are trying to treat him medically, but the anti-inflammatory medication may not work and has unwanted side effects. He needs care and attention that we cannot provide. During an interaction with a potential foster, King became aroused and jumped up, grabbing one of the potential foster's jacket and pulling on it until it ripped off. Before this King was reported to have a loose body and was playing with tennis balls and was receptive to pets.

Binks

Binks is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in his previous. Binks in his previous home is noted to have a bite incident where he bit the other resident smaller dog and the dog passed away from his injuries. The previous owner shared no details as to why the bite happened, but Binks has been fearful overall in the care center and slowly warming up to staff. Medically, Binks is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Garlic

Garlic is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Garlic arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Garlic has presented with a loose and wiggly body and has been social with handlers. Recently Garlic has been observed to become rope reactive. Noted to jump up high and bite the leash intensely. This behavior is not easily redirected using treats. While in kennel Garlic has also been observed to bite the leash when handlers are attempting to leash him. Medically Garlic is apparently healthy.

Bubbles is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Darude Sandstorm is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Little Loaf is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center. She displays signs of overstimulation which has escalated to bite and scratch incidents while in shelter. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Nugget

Nugget is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Nugget has been struggling in the care center despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Nugget has been observed to lunge at equipment, staff and other dogs in her kennel and starting to rebound/pace in her kennel incessantly throughout the day. Medically, Nugget has an ear infection.

Kittee

Kittee is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Kittee arrived at MACC as a stray with a limited history. Her finder states that she will hard bark, growl, and lunge towards dogs, small animals, and children. During her stay in the care center Kittee has been observed to present similar behaviors. She has been observed to lunge and vocalize towards animal and people. This behavior is able to be redirected using treats. Medically Kittee has diarrhea and is underweight.

Greywash

Greywash is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center, Greywash has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body, tucked tail and whale eyes. When approached Greywash becomes avoidant of the handler and attempts to hide. During his medical exam Greywash was observed to lip lift and growl. Multiple reassessments were attempted in which he continued to display very high levels of fearfulness. He was avoidant of handlers, remained tense with a tucked tail, showing whale eyes, and seeks exit. Greywash has tolerated brief, gentle petting on his head. Medically, he has recently recovered from CIRDC.

Luna Tides

Luna Tides is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. Luna Tide's previous owner reports that she will hard bark at unfamiliar people, kids, dogs and cats but can also be friendly and outgoing with them as well. Luna Tides has been soft and wiggly when interacting handlers at the care center. However, she has displayed dog reactivity, pulling towards them on walks and grabbing their tails as they passed her pop up crate. This incident did not result in broken skin. Recently, Luna Tides has been observed to bite at the kennel bars. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Druski is on the At Risk list due to behavior and inconsistent appetite due to FAS. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Paprika

Paprika is at risk due to deterioration. Despite attempts to keep her comfortable, she has begun to bark and lunge towards dogs in kennel as well as outside and bang or paw on her door. She was initially fearful and defensive towards staff, but has warmed significantly and is wiggly and highly affiliative during interactions. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Pretzel Bite

Pretzel Bite is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She presented underweight with diarrhea. Blood work shows marked elevated white blood cell count and mild anemia. Despite increasing her caloric intake, she has not gained much weight, and still underweight. There is some concern that her small intestinal tract in inflamed and thickened. She needs care and diagnostics that we cannot provide. Behaviorally, Pretzel Bite has been social with staff, easily handled, and enjoys pets.

Full Moon

Reserved
Full Moon is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Full Moon arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. His previous owner describes him as a high energy dog who is reactive towards strangers, children and dogs. In one instance, Full Moon jumped up on a member of the public's child and bit them on the arm. It is unknown if the bite broke skin or not. In the care centers he has been reported to hard bark, growl, and lunge towards people while on leash. Recently, he has also been observed to display signs of deterioration, including a low threshold for arousal escalating to mouthing hands and arms, leash biting, licking crate bars, and pulling his linens into his crate. Full Moon has remained social with handlers during his stay in the care centers. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Wyatt

Wyatt is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Wyatt has been observed to be very fearful. Noted to be tense and hard stare towards the handler. Throughout his stay Wyatt has been observed to thrash along with jumping up and biting at leash. He has also displayed dog reactivity. Finder has reported that Wyatt wasn't bothered by the cats in the home. It is reported by staff he likes to play fetch. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Buster

Buster is at risk for behavior reasons. Buster can be affectionate with staff, but recently has been easily aroused and mouthing consistently with moderate pressure. When being assessed, he escalated to biting at the assess-a-hand without warning when tested for resource guarding. Medically, he has mild periodontal disease otherwise appears healthy.

King Jake

King Jake is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. King Jake in care has been intensely fearful in care despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. King Jake has escalated to growling, shying away from handlers and avoiding as much interaction as he can with staff. King Jake has been slowly improving in care, but still remains intensely fearful. He has begun to kennel fight when going in and out of the kennel room. Medically, King Jake is apparently healthy.

Riggz

Riggz is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Riggz has shown sociability with handlers, he is struggling to acclimate to the shelter environment best despite efforts to keep him comfortable. He readily accepts treats, engages with toys, and seeks attention, but easily and quickly becomes aroused which manifests as intense leash biting and can be difficult to refocus even with the use of treats, toys, and coaxing. He has grabbed at handlers' hands, sleeves, hair, and shoes. Once aroused, it becomes difficult to remove and return Riggz to his kennel safely. Medically, Riggz is apparently healthy.

Chicken Little

Chicken Little is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Chicken was returned to shelter due to nipping at his previous adopter. Those nips did not break skin or leave any severe marks. During his stay in the care center Chicken has been observed to growl and nip at handlers arms when they are attempting to releash him in the yard. Chicken has also been observed to be panting, pacing, barking, and jumping up in his crate. Medically, Chicken Little is apparently healthy.

Valintine

Valintine is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Valintine is a senior cat with kidney disease and other bloodwork abnormalities. He is underweight with muscle wasting, but has had a good appetite since arriving in shelter. Recommend follow up with veterinarian for additional diagnostics and treatment plan for chronic kidney disease. Valintine has tolerated medical handling well.

Dill Pickle

Dill Pickle is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Dill Pickle has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has displayed concerning behaviors towards another dog during a walk. When approached in kennel, he has been observed to pant heavily, jump on the kennel door, and demand barks. He does not take treats and has difficulty settling. During a walk, Dill charged at another dog after lunging and getting loose from the handler walking him when they bent down to collect his stool. The handler with the other dog has to pick up their large dog and put it on top of a car to increase the distance between Dill Pickle and the other dog. He continued to jump up and snap at the other dog while other handlers run over to assist in separating the dogs by grabbing their leashes. No contact or injury was made to either dog. Medically, Dill Pickle has CIRDC.
