Animal Profile

Canelo

Hello, my name is Canelo. My animal id is #62696. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 4 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/1/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Canelo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behaviors reported by his former owners in his previous homes. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

I am a super playful, high energy PARTY ANIMAL! Can you say PAR-TAY because I can! I love attention, in fact I demand it and I have been known to play roughly, and if you don't entertain me with playtime (lots of it) and zoomies I will become bored and then I can become trouble! I love toys like feather wands, and toss-able toys that keep my claws away from your hands. Climbing trees are a plus! I also like being held when I'm in a relaxed mood. So if your home has adults only, and you really get me and preferably have had experience with other Canelo-tastic cats (or have one now!), please speak with an adoption counselor! A volunteer writes: Merrily modeling each of his toys as though everyone walking by would love nothing more than to be a proud owner of a scratching pad, a crinkle ball, or a pipe cleaner feather, Canelo never seems to tire of being our resident game show host. He's an active cat with a fantastic sense of imagination, so needless to say, he's been keeping himself very busy and, thankfully, in high spirits. This is especially important because this isn't Canelo's first time here, nor is it his second. We are hoping it's his last because we know the perfect family is out there for him.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet,Affectionate,Playful,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Very high energy level,Uncomfortable with pick up,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Canelo is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Canelo becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. Canelo is an active cat who would benefit from increased mental and physical stimulation to appropriately direct his energy. We recommend using fishing pole-type toys as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise. Puzzle feeders will also keep Canelo engaged and exercise his brain in addition to his body. Canelo struggled a bit during the pickup, and while not to the point of being described as "uncomfortable with pickup", he may need a little extra care when picking him up. Due to the cat’s size and weight, it is likely that they feel unbalanced when lifted. When picking up, make sure that the cat is being fully supported from under their chest as well as their hips, using two hands and holding parallel to the floor while lifting. Most recent owner said she "slipped and fell and then Canelo scratched her up and gave her a black eye/multiple scratches on her arms".

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9.8.24: Canelo was resting in loaf on top of his den upon approach, but jumped down once treats were provided. When the assessor extended their hand, he hissed. He sniffed the scratch tool and allowed petting on his head. He leaned into petting on his cheeks and neck, and allowed deep back strokes. He then head-bunted the assessor and allowed all petting by hand. His tail began to flick and sway, he gave a low-hiss and a warning swat (no claws). The assessor closed the door without attempting pick up and played with a wand toy through the bars. 10.8.24: Canelo was on top of his kuranda bed with neutral body language upon approach. He came down to eat treats and enjoyed petting all over, leaning in and raising his hips. He was tense-bodied and grumbly when initially picked up and held for 5 seconds. When he made eye contact with the cat in the kennel next to him, Canelo hissed and struggled to be placed back down. Once back in his kennel, Canelo redirected and swat at the assessor's arm. He didn't escalate further, and chose to just go back up to his kuranda bed. Canelo solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to his previous bite/scratch history, we feel he is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
