Jalapeño
Hello, my name is Jalapeño. My animal id is #209798. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/10/2024.
Jalapeno is at risk for behavioral reasons. Jalapeno has shown significant fear during her time at the shelter. She often appears tense, with wide eyes, a tucked tail, and a strong desire to escape while avoiding interaction with handlers. When out on walks, she tends to hesitate and pull back. Although she has started to warm up to certain staff members—showing a softer demeanor and allowing some handling—she still remains very fearful outside. This fear causes her to flatten to the ground, making walks challenging, and sometimes, she needs to be carried out due to her intense anxiety about her surroundings. Medically, Jalapeno is apparently healthy.

Summary:: Jalapeño has shown improvement with select handlers at the care center over time. While a handling assessment was completed and Jalapeño has shown the potential to do well with certain people, the below handling assessment is not a sole indicator of the behaviors she will display once she leaves the Care Centers. Based on Jalapeños behavior history at the Care Center, we recommend giving her ample time to decompress in a new home, always using a slow approach, and positive reinforcement when introducing him to new and unfamiliar situations and people. Summary (5):: 10/5/24: Jalapeno is sitting at the front of the kennel with neutral body. She is easily leashed and removed from. Once out she runs to the end of the leash and spins around then jumps up onto handler. She does not take treats. When walked on the street, she is soft bodied with soft hanging tail. As people pass, she turns to face them and watch them as they pass, remaining neutral. She does this for every person or dog that passes. In the driveway, she becomes loose bodied, bouncing around on the leash and will sit on the bench for treats. She allows some petting. She is easily returned to kennel. 10/4/24: Jalapeno is laying in her bed as handler approaches. She approaches and is leashed without issue and upon exiting kennel is very exuberant and jumpy. She whimpers and jumps towards handler, rubbing against them and jumping excitedly on them. She is taken to the yard first, along the way she continues excitedly hopping and looking up at handler. Once inside the play yard she runs around and begins jumping into handler. Handler attempts to but Jalapeno on a drag leash but she begins mouthing the leash as well as handlers hand so handler takes a break and offers her treats to distract. Jalapeno and handler sit on the bench together and Jalapeno begins rolling around handlers lap and very quickly and intensely rubs against handler. She accepts pets but will occasionally turn her head with an open mouth towards handler. She is finally placed on a drag leash and she begins running around the play yard back and forth very fast, jumping up at handler still incrementally. She finds a toy and begins running around with it in her mouth playing by herself for a while and continues to approach handler for pets, at one point mouthing his hand but stops jumping to continue playing with her toy to get more energy out. Once she seems tired out she is taken to the street for her walk. She walks slightly in front of handler and walks past people without issue. She takes treats outside and looks up at handler intermittently and uses the bathroom once outside. She is clipped and returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 9/25/24: Jalapeno is sleeping in her bed as handler approaches. She approaches handler as her door opens and the leash is presented. She is leashed easily and brought to the street for her walk. Jalapeno is soft and wiggly as she leaves kennel, she looks up at handler and gallops softly out to the street following close behind them. Jalapeno is immediately receptive to pets from handler and will jump into handlers arms when handler attempts to pet her, she is observed to lip lick excessively during her walk however. When she gets to the street she remains loose however she begins freezing and stops walking, staring forward. As a person begins passing by Jalapeno visibly shrinks down and hunches over, slightly cowering. The passerby stops to not stress Jalapeno and she is called over by handler, she begins walking over but freezes and cowers whenever the passerby begins moving. Handler finds a stone bench and sits down, Jalapeno follows and places her head onto handlers lap. She begins crawling up and into handlers lap before completely curling into handler and lying her head down. She accepts pets and will lean deeper into handler, she continues to lip lick however. Handler brings her back to the garage and they walk around the outdoor area for a while longer before handler returns Jalapeno without further issue.
Summary (7):: 9/17/24- Jalapeño was laying down at the back of her kennel with a neutral body with her head low. She didn’t come to the front when the door was opened. Handler reached in and she was leashed. She didn’t get up, handler applied pressure to the leash and she slowly got up. She was taken to the play yard and was put on drag leash. She sat by the handler when they sat on the bench. She just watched dogs walk by her pen and watched the pigeons. She eventually got up and sniffed around the pen, relieving her self. She came back to lay down by the handler, she allowed handler to pet her head, chin and back. She was offered treats but showed no interest. Handler easily released her, she didn’t want to stand up. Handler picked her up without issue and returned to her to kennel without issue. 9/13/24: Jalapeno was in her crate with a neutral body. The crate was cracked open and she walked out her tail pressed against her body. She is taken to the backyard where she sniffs around and does not relieve herself. Treats are tossed to her at times and she sniffs them but does not eat them. She is walked into the pen where she wanders around. She turns towards handler and lip licks and begins to vocalize and whimper. When being brought back to her kennel she stops and pulls back when handler walks forward. Another handler bands Jalapeno and she is lifted into the crate. She does not walk and keeps her feet planted. When placed into the crate she makes attempts to turn around and leave. She is quickly put in and the crate is closed. 9/13/24- Jalapeno is at the back of her pop up crate with tense body, she slowly comes to the front and is easily leashed. She shies away when passing the other pop up crate dogs when they are barking at her. She has to be coaxed into the elevator as she was backing up from it. She is taken for a street walk. She moderately pulls and is aloof with handler. She backs away when people pass her while staring at them. She is offered treats but shows no interest. She is taken for an assessment, she seeks exit throughout and is aloof with handlers. She is easily releashed, when returning her to her pop up she plants outside the crate. Handler tosses treats in but Jalapeno doesn't follow. Handler tried a squeaker but she didn't move. Handler asked for assistance and she had to be belly banded into her pop up crate.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Jalapeño so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 09/13/24: During her walk, Jalapeño did not want to enter the building. Later, she did not want to returned to her crate and the handler needed a second hand to help her.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
