Animal Profile

Reese

Hello, my name is Reese. My animal id is #234384. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 8/15/2025.

Reese is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center. He continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has made limited progress despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful cat adjust to strangers and new environments.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Reese is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he appears wary of human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Baby Reese has no idea how beautiful he is and even if he knew, I don't know how much he would care. That's fine. Navigating the shelter seems to take up a lot of space for this guy and, as I'm sure you can imagine, he has a pretty full plate. Lowering his head when we go to say hi, it's almost like Reese wishes we would forget he's there. But then we offer him pets and snacks and Reese realizes that maybe shelter life is ok, especially since it's bringing him one step closer to meeting you.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Reese was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. He is known to have lived with 2 Adults, around 30 Cats and Kittens, and some Turtles.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/19/25 FB61 Lying in cat den upon approach, body and face neutral with ears forward and pupils dilated. He sniffs the air when offered treats but he remains subdued and will not eat them as I'm watching. He is tolerant of gentle pets on his head and closes his eyes in response, potentially feinting sleep. 8/25/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, head lowered onto floor with pupils dilated and body and face slightly tensed, ears forward. He raises his head and watches as I offer treats, but he remains otherwise in his hiding spot in the same position. He is once again tolerant of petting while leaning away and tilting his ears slightly. He does not show interest in the treats during our session or immediately after. Appears rather subdued. 8/26/25 FB58 Sitting on top of the den with a slightly tense face and body and hisses as I open the cage door. I sit and slow blink, waiting for him to settle and he eventually softens slightly, returning some slow blinks. I slowly offer out some squeeze up on the top of his den and he watches with a tense face and body, taking slow steps forward before he begins to eat it and really enjoys it. I click to mark each time he eats and he goes through a whole tube. I am also able to clicker train and have him smell a few dry treats un my finger before placing them down to let him eat. 8/28/25 FB58 In his den and laying with a neutral face and body when the den cover is lifted - he stares at me for some time with a somewhat neutral face and offers some slow blinks. I offer some dry treats outside the den portal and then put some squeeze up on the edge of the portal, which he begins to eat. When I lift the den door, he turns and hisses at be then moves to sniff my hand through the door. I place some squeeze up down in a line and when he starts to eat, CT when I pet while he eats. He does well with pets with the tool along his back but is not comfortable with pets along his head. I am able to get one pet on his head with my hand though. 8/31/25 Vol Reese was in his den. He hissed at me as soon as I opened the kennel door. He had made a bit of a mess in his kennel, with used litter scattered outside the litter box and his food bowls overturned. As I was replacing the litter box, Reese came out of the den to eat his wet food. He jumped up onto the ledge, staying at the back. He tolerated being petted with the scratcher tool, watching it work on his body. He did not lean in nor seem to want the petting to continue, so I ended the interaction. He went into his den for a little while, then came out to eat some more wet food. He needs time to warm up. 9/4/25 FB85 No den now, has been lunge-y and avoidant. At front eating, low growls and hisses w/ tense body - I lightly flick treats near him and he hisses with no interest before moving back into box. I place some squeeze up down and walk away. When I check back he has eaten it. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Reese came from a home with about 30+ other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Reese would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/18/25 Inside of the den, Reese has a very tense body with wide dilated eyes and forward ears when approached; Reese backs up into the corner of the den with his tail tightly wrapped when the pointer tool is slowly introduced for petting, but tolerated pets on his head and cheeks as well as down his body with no reaction. When treats were tossed into the den Reese remained very still as he fixated on the assessor with wide eyes, but shortly after while receiving soft pets on the top of his head with the tool, he slowly leaned in to sniff and enjoy the treats. 9/18/25 Upon re-eval, Reese is sitting on top of his kuranda bed with a slightly tense face and body, ears forward and eyes squinted. He tenses as the cage door is opened and wraps his tail around his feet. When the assessor offers the scratcher tool out to him, he leans away and flinches as the assessor makes contact and begins to pet along his head. When the assessor attempts to pet along his cheek and side, he hisses and lip licks. He is somewhat tolerant of touch but remains wary of human interactions. Pick up is not attempted and the interaction is ended to prevent further FAS. Reese is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. 9/19/25 FB20 Reese has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. He is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.
