At-Risk Animals

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Seven

Seven is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center. She is now displaying signs of [petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation, etc.]. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Coco
Coco is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Coco has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Pulling hard towards them with a tense body, lunging and growling. This behavior is not able to be easily redirected. Coco is reported to have a multiple bite history with dogs. With handlers Coco is observed to be social. Medically, Coco is overweight and has a mass near her anus that is a concern. Coco will need further testing and attention that we are unable to provide in-shelter.

Harp
Harp is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Moteck is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Medically Moteck has mild dental tartar, but is otherwise healthy.

Maxi
Maxi is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Maxi has been observed to be highly dog reactive, hard barking and lunging towards them. After reacting towards dogs Maxi is observed to jump towards handlers and redirect onto them. Maxi has also been observed to become easily over aroused and begin leash biting. Medically Maxi is apparently healthy.

Tiny
Tiny is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Tiny enjoys squeeze-up treats and she came from a home with many other cats. The behavior team believes she may warm up quicker with the company of a resident cat.

Connor
Connor is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. he is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Chillton

Chillton is on the at-risk list for behavioral and medical concerns. Chillton has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains highly stressed. He is becoming difficult to remove from the kennel and walk due to the intensity of his kennel fighting. Chillton digs at the kennel door, but once leashed he immediately rushes towards the kennel, lunging and hard barking at each. He repeats these behaviors when being returned to his kennel. Once back inside, he begins heavy panting, licking the kennel walls, with a flushed face and dilated eyes. Medically, Chillton has been recently treated for Parvo (which has since been resolved) and is currently being treated for CIRDC. Chillton also has conjunctivitis, dental disease, and dermatitis.

Gibbes
Gibbes is on the at-risk list for behavioral reasons. He is highly treat-motivated and enjoys enrichment activities, but his energy can escalate quickly, hyper-focusing on toys causing him to have self-inflicted wounds. While he is often friendly and engaging with handlers, Gibbes has shown a high degree of fear particularly in response to sudden noises, resulting in attempts to escape, whining, and urinating on himself. Medically Gibbes has a heart murmur.

Zoey
Zoey is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Zoey has been observed to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center, noted to dodge the leash. Zoey has been observed to escalate to baring teeth and snapping at the leash. Zoey is also observed to not be receptive to coaxing, squeakie sounds, or high value treats. Medically, Zoey has been placed on a specialty diet due to diarrhea and is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Omni
Omni is at risk due to behavioral concerns. In the care center, Omni allows to be petted and takes treats from staff. However, Omni has been observed to body slam her kennel door and hard bark at handlers. Omni also jumps on other staff members, with one instance of her jumping and attempting to mouth a staff members hand. The staff member moved their hand out of the way and Omni mouthed their shirt with hard pressure. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Omni is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Omni is apparently healthy.

Fudge

Fudge is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Fudge initially presented as fearful during the beginning of his stay in care. He gave clear warnings when uncomfortable but did escalate to higher level warnings when attempting to remove him from his kennel - baring teeth, growling, snapping. With a slow approach and the use of high-value treats, Fudge began to warm up and would engage with playing with toys, more tolerant of leashing, and solicited attention from select handlers and staff. Fudge continues to display behaviors similar to those of unfamiliar staff, strangers, and other dogs on walks. He has escalated to lunging, hard barking, and growling. He can sometimes be difficult to walk due to his size and persistence. Medically, Fudge has dental disease and is cryptorchid.

Lobo De La Noche
Lobo is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Lobo has chronic skin disease, likely caused by an underlying allergy. His skin has not responded to treatments in shelter thus far. He will need to see a vet (dermatologist is ideal) to help manage his chronic disease.

Cane
Cane is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Cane has been observed to hard bark and snap towards handlers while muzzle punching the kennel door. During interactions Cane has been observed to growl towards handlers while remaining tense, however he has been noted to warm up slowly to select handlers. Medically Cane has dental disease.

Chance
Chance is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Chance arrived to the care center as a stray with no known history. During his time in care Chance was observed to be social jumping on handlers with a loose wiggly body and unable to be redirected with treats. While in foster, Chance redirected onto a handler after seeing a loose dog. Throughout his stay in the care center Chance has begun to kennel fight intensely with the other dogs in the room. Medically, Chance is apparently healthy.

Barkington
Barkington is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Barkington has been observed to baulk and thrash while on leash. When handlers attempt to use a sling Barkington has been observed to headwhip towards handlers hands. With handlers Barkington is noted to appear loose body with a soft wagging tail. Medically Barkington has unspecified dermatitis and has been treated for otitis externa.

Robert
Robert is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. Robert has been leash biting intensely, biting through the leash when handlers attempt to remove him from kennel. Once he is out of kennel, Robert is soft and social, allowing petting and soliciting attention. Medically, Robert is apparently healthy.

Saint
Saint is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Owner reported Saint bite a family member on the finger. It was a bite and release, client stated it broke skin but didn't draw blood. This is the only time he has bitten, and it was due to living in a fearful environment. In the care center, he has been fearful and stressed in kennel, intermittently trembling and hypersalivating, despite attempts to make him comfortable. He has growled, hard barked, and lunged at dogs while on leash. Saint is generally social with staff, accepting contact with a low tail wag, and takes treats with a soft mouth. Medically, he has dermatitis but is overall healthy.

Claremont

Claremont is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Claremont has been highly stressed in the kennel environment, jumping at her kennel door repeatedly, and spinning. Caremont struggles to regulate on her own, but is social with staff and engages with enrichment to help her regulate her arousal, but still struggles inside her kennel. Medically, Claremont is apparently healthy.

Harlem
Harlem is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Harlem in care has been intensely fearful, allowing for minimal handling with select handlers, growling/hard barking when approached in kennel and has escalated to baring teeth and snapping towards staff. Harlem when out for interaction will choose to interact with staff at times, but still remains highly fearful and anxious. Medically, Harlem has a reported chicken allergy but is overall healthy.

Draco
Draco is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Draco has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Draco in his kennel will continuously hard bark throughout the day, panting heavily with a strained expression even with enrichment to try and settle him. Outside of his kennel, Draco is social and playful with staff. Medically, Draco is receiving treatment for pododermatitis and otitis, believe to be caused due to allergies.

Remy
Remy is at risk due to behavior concerns. Remy was reported to have bitten twice previously. Both incidents being bite-and-releases one to a person and one to another dog. In the Care Center, Remy is highly reactive towards other dogs and is difficult to redirect when walking past them. Due to the stress of the shelter environment, she has started chewing a hole in her kennel wall. When not around dogs, Remy displays a neutral posture and enjoys cheese. Medically, Remy is healthy.

Craig
Craig is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In his previous home, he has bitten twice, though neither bite resulted in broken skin. He is reported to guard his food, treats, and toys, escalating to snapping. Craig has growled at both his previous owner and care center staff when they attempted to leash him. He shows no interest in treats, but has been observed wagging his tail once outside the kennel. Medically, Craig has dental disease but is otherwise healthy.
