Trudy
Hello, my name is Trudy. My animal id is #233614. I am a female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/4/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTrudy is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing she has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

A volunteer writes: Trudy looked so pleased with herself as she twirled around at the front of her condo. Headbutting my hands and showing me her belly, I wanted nothing more than to celebrate with her. Trudy was brought to us by police, so we don't know much about her life before. She seems, however, determined to tell us all about who she is now. Explaining between nuzzles that it's all about progress and not perfection, Trudy said that patience and understanding have been wonderful for her confidence (the treats are pretty good too). Since Trudy came in prepared to keep to herself and snuggled up in her den with her tail tucked tightly around her, we absolutely believed her, but we still wanted to try. Little by little, Trudy's come out more and more and I can't say enough about the fun little cat I've been so privileged to meet.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Trudy was brought in as astray, there is no known information on their behavior in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/13/25 Sitting/laying in her den at the back with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. She hisses with her tail wrapped tightly. I offer treats and she shows no interest, unable to coax out. I place a cage cover and end the interaction. 8/14/25 FB58 In den and hidden from view, when cover lifted she begins to stress vocalize. I am able to place a tray with squeeze up and chicken in the den without issue and she slow inches forward and begins to eat the squeeze up. I click to mark each time she eats and begin CT for engaging with the treats in front of me. Once she finishes the squeeze up, she begins to investigate the chicken. I offer the scratcher tool outside the den and she begins to whine and growl, turning around and curling in on herself. I remove the tool from her sight and while she continues to whine and growl, she begins to eat again and I continue to CT. 8/20/25 FB58 In her den and hidden, when the cover is removed - she is sitting with a slightly tense face and body. I offer her squeeze up in her den and she begins to eat. I click to mark her eating and place some in her medical feeding tray. She pokes her head out to eat from the tray and continues to eat the squeeze up (and get clicks to mark). I offer some dry treats and she again pokes her head out to eat them. I am able to get her to sniff the treat when it is in my finger and click to mark before placing it down for her to eat. 8/27/25 FB61 Loafed in front of kennel as I use the cat pole dancer toy! She watches with her feet and tail tucked, ears forward and pupils dilated. After this play therapy session I open her cubby door to see if she'll let me pet her and she hisses, then when touched with the scratcher tool she gets up and retreats into her cat den. She comes out for catnip toy, sniffs it, notices me and then retreats back into her hiding spot. I am able to get her back to the front of her kennel for temptation treats! As she's eating I speak to her softly and slow-blink before focusing on the other cats. 9/05/25 FB61 Trudy is standing in front of her kennel as I approach, ears forward, eyes alert, peoples dilated and tail raised. Trudy vocalizes softly when spoken to and she begins pawing at the door. Today, Trudy tolerates petting with the scratcher tool while backing away initially and raising her paw in warning as she stands on her hind legs. As petting continues, Trudy raises her tail while continuing to back away, her eyes wide and pupils dilated. Trudy appears to be conflicted at this time however, she did very well today. Trudy was rewarded with treats and a catnip toy today which she enjoyed thoroughly.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Trudy was sitting upright in the back of her kennel as the assessor approached, body turned to face the wall. Trudy turned their head to face the assessor when spoken to, ears tilting and pupils dilated and they began to stress meow as the kennel door opened. Trudy turned fully around and crouched down as the assessor reached towards them with the assess-a-hand and Trudy hissed and swatted it hard as it reached towards her. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 9/7/25 Sitting at the front of her kennel, Trudy lays with a very relaxed/neutral face and body when the assessor approaches; she stands with a slightly high tail when the kennel door is open and is spoken to softly. She quietly meows/chirps and slow blinks at the assessor, but when the assessor slowly brought their hand in for pets her back arched, her ears tilted and she took a few steps back into the kennel. Trudy did not sniff the assessors hands and harshly hissed when the assessor attempted to pet the top of her head. As Trudy is spoken to softly, she continues to low meow and chirp then slowly retreats into her den with her tail high as she sits in her den with her tail loosely wrapped. Trudy continues to chirp and slow blank, but cannot be coaxed back out of the den with treats or pets and hissed harshly once again when the pointer tool was introduced again in attempt for pets. Trudy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. Trudy has tried to swat and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
