Animal Profile

Oreo Cookie

Hello, my name is Oreo Cookie. My animal id is #235547. I am a female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive to other animals.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Pre-Screener Form Oreo Cookie is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She is a young cat with a poor appetite due to an upper respiratory infection and asthma. She needs a low stress environment in order to recover. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other pets. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Oreo Cookie's charmingly curious with a silliness that will make anyone smile. She loves to pounce and cuddle, chit chat and do her own thing around the people she loves most. This is what we've heard and though we've been pulling out all the stops to get to see that side of her, we also know that Oreo Cookie makes her own decisions when the time feels right. As you might imagine, shelter life doesn't provide as many opportunities and so I often see Oreo Cookie sitting on top of her perch with her tail wrapped tightly around as a security blanket of sorts. We know that Oreo Cookie's life before is considerably different than where she currently finds herself, but we're still hoping that someone will see this lovely cat and give her a chance.

When cleaning out the litter box on the right kennel side, Oreo silently walks halfway out of the den and reaches her paw through the portal door to swat at the handler's arm on their sweater sleeve. Oreo steps back and the handler is able to remove the litter box. When providing the new litter box in the kennel, Oreo comes out again to bat the handler's arm sleeve multiple times, then retreats back into the den to hide. 9/4/25 FB32 Lying down curled up on top of the den with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Oreo Cookie was hiding in the den and lying down relaxed; however, when removing the den cover, she begins to hiss, stress meow, and growl at the assessor with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. She steps back when reaching close with treats on the scratcher tool and continues to hiss, growl, and stress meow. She continues to vocalize and lip lick when pet on the head. She looks back to sniff the tool when stroking her body. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. She continues to vocalize in stress when slowly pulling the tool away. When returning the den cover, she swats at the front door. Oreo Cookie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and has a low tolerance for petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
