At-Risk Animals

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Bonbona
Bonbona is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She has a history if predatory behaviors in her previous homes which have resulted in previous bites/scratches. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in more bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home/rescue with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Zorro
Zorro is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Zorro arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Zorro is showing signs of deterioration in kennel. Recently Zorro has observed to be panting heavily, intensely vocalize, pace, paw at bars, with dilated pupils while in kennel. Staff have reported that at times when approaching his kennel, Zorro is lunging toward front of kennel, growling, baring teeth. When attempting to place a kennel blocker on his kennel door, Zorro muzzle punched the door and started to bite the attachment hook of the kennel blocker. Outside of kennel, Zorro is noted to be social with staff and treat motivated. Medically, Zorro is apparently healthy.

Muffin
Muffin is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Muffin arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon arrival Muffin was noted to be fearful and thrash when being walked into kennel. During his medical exam Muffin was noted to dodge the muzzle, but treat motivated. Muffin has continued to show fearful tendencies during a recent handling assessment, becoming tense bodied, head-whipping toward staff, and whale eyed during contact. Muffin has also shown reactivity to people and dogs. Staff have reported that when on leash, Muffin will hard stare, growl, and hard bark at people with a tense body. When being walked through the Care Center. Muffin has also been noted to be reactive to dogs in pop-up crates at times. With familiar staff, Muffin has been social and consistently treat motivated. Medically, Muffin is noted to have Alopecia.

Mr. Pickles
Mr. Pickles is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Mr. Pickles arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon his arrival Mr. Pickles was highly fearful, retreating from handlers attempting to leash him. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Mr. Pickles has allowed minimal handling with staff. Mr. Pickles is also noted to be highly reactive to dogs, pulling hard withe tense body, vocalizing with visual fixation that is difficult to redirect. Mr. Pickles has been difficult to handle safely when being returned to kennel, often baulking in front of his kennel without being able to be coaxed forward with verbal cues or treats, and at times scrambling away and seeking exit. With staff Mr. Pickles is generally aloof, and is treat motivated at times. Medically Mr. Pickles had a wound which appears to have healed and has dental disease.

Jenny
Jenny is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in the care center and her previous home. Jenny has not been acclimating to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. When approached in kennel Jenny is seen to pant heavily, hard bark and growl. Jenny growled and bit the previous adopter when they attempted to remove something from her mouth, leaving a small puncture. She is fearful, though she is warming up to familiar staff, and struggling to acclimate inside of her kennel. Medically, Jenny may have allergies.

Speed Racer
Speed Racer is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Speed Racer in the care center is not acclimating to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Speed Racer during interaction and in kennel heavily pants, has difficulty settling on her own, and dilated pupils, occasionally leash biting. Medically, Speed Racer is apparently healthy.

Shamooni
Shamooni is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Her owner describes her as independent cat that loves to lounge around and prefers contact on her own terms. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, she has some matting and moderate dental disease.

Selly
Selly is at risk for medical reasons. She has multiple mammary masses with one large mass close to rupturing. Selly needs placement so she can have the mass (and chain) surgically removed to continue providing her with a good quality of life. She allows all handling for medical exams. Behaviorally, she is best suited for a single pet home and for an adopter who has experience managing the following behaviors: anxiety, barrier/on-leash reactivity, poor impulse control.

His owner describes him as a friendly, affectionate, quite, lazy, independent cat. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically he is matted, but otherwise healthy.

Saphire
Saphire is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Saphire in the care center has been struggling to acclimate, leash biting in attempts to remove her from kennel making it difficult to walk her safely at times. Saphire is also reactive to other dogs on leash, lunging and pulling towards other dogs periodically fixating on them but can be refocused at times. Medically, Saphire has a rash around her spay site.

Gwendalyn is on the at-risk list due to medical and behavior concerns. Gwendalyn is an obese adult female cat who has not been eating in care and has come down with an upper respiratory infection. Gwendalyn has allowed for very limited handling while in our care and would benefit from a quiet low stress environment to recover. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. Three
Three is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Three in the care center has been struggling to acclimate despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Three is highly aroused in kennel and out for walks, biting onto his leash upon returning, mounting staff incessantly, mouthing handlers clothes and at times is difficult to refocus, making it also difficult to walk him safely at times. Three is social with staff but struggling to regulate on his own in the care center. Medically, Three has scrotal erythema.

Love
Love is on the at risk list due to behavior concerns in care, as well as behavior concerns reported by his previous owners. His previous owners state that he will lunge at other dogs and strangers when they approached, and in the care center has displayed this behavior with staff. Love in the care center has been intensely fearful intially with staff, growling, hard barking and avoidant of staff. Love is slowly warming up to staff, but still struggling in the care center environment. Medically, Love has CIRDC and Mild dental disease.

Appa
Appa is on the at risk list due to behavior concerns in his previous home. Appa is noted to bark and lunge towards strangers, dogs and cats on and off leash and is noted to have high level of resource guarding. Appa when his food, toys or treats are approach will hover over them and growl and if approach will snap. Medically, Appa is apparently healthy.

Blue Lantern
Blue Lantern is at risk due to behavior concerns. Blue Lantern arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. During is intake and medical exam, Blue Lantern was noted to be social, allowed handling, and easy to leash. Recently, during a handling assessment Blue Lantern was noted to resource guard, taking items in his possession and hovering over them with a tense body. More concerning, is Blue Lantern is showing signs of deterioration in kennel. Blue Lantern has been observed pushing his face against the kennel door, as well as licking and biting the kennel bars; his fur was noted to be wet with his own saliva. With staff Blue Lantern continues to be moderately social outside of kennel. Medically, Blue Lantern is apparently healthy.

Kanga
Kanga is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Kanga in care has been highly fearful despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Kanga is low bodied, aloof from staff and at times does not want to walk on the sidewalk. Kanga has also displayed a high level of resource guarding over her food, growling, baring teeth and hard barking at staff that approach. Medically, Kanga has mild skin issues.

Guidance
Guidance is at risk due to behavior concerns. His previous owner states that he is a friendly, high energy, and playful dog. Since his arrival, Guidance has displayed fearful defensive behavior. Observed to low growl, pant, and become tense during his intake. Throughout his stay he has slowly warmed up to select staff and tolerated handling. However, he has started showing signs of deterioration in kennel. Observed to spin and pace, and most recently, he's throwing his body onto the transfer door repeatedly. Medically, he has lameness in his left hind leg.
