Animal Profile

Pantha

Hello, my name is Pantha. My animal id is #118777. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 9 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/27/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Pantha is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and has begun to deteriorate in the Adoptions room. He is now at times displaying signs of frustration and over stimulation during cage cleanings and during some interactions. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, over stimulation, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Pantha interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Although Pantha is showing level 2 behavior here in our care center, due to a multiple scratch & bite history the behavior team is recommending he goes to a single-pet, adult only home with experienced cat parents. The behavior team believes that Pantha has the chance to thrive with the right cat parents and ideally in a quiet, low-traffic home with daily mental and physical stimulation provided. A volunteer writes: Pantha is a handsome tuxedo cat who does not play well with children. He can be fearful when meeting strangers, but may warm up with time. He can be prone to becoming overstimulated, so that is something his future parents will need to be on the lookout for. In the shelter, Pantha has been described as social, sweet, affectionate and people oriented. He can be unsure of his surroundings. He needs experienced cat parents who will treat him gently. Because of his history of playing roughly with kids, he needs to go to a home which does not include young children. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/21/21 At front of kennel upon approach, ears forward and face relaxed. He rubs against the kennel door, then allows petting along his head and body after the kennel door opens while leaning in, raising his tail, eating his treats and looking at me with soft eyes. Did well! 7/15/21 Standing in front of kennel, rubbing against kennel door and reaching out towards me with soft paws. He allows petting along his head and body while continuing to lean in, tail remaining high as he head-butts my hand. Doing well! 8/31/21 Crouched in front of kennel, ears forward and feet and tail tucked. His pupils are dilated. He stands up as I open the kennel door, then allows petting along his head and back with the scratcher tool while leaning in, raising his tail and remaining slightly tensed. He turns to watch the scratcher tool but does not escalate further. Appears social but unsure - needs some time to adjust. 9/2/21 Lying in front of kennel, ears forward, body neutral and pupils dilated. He stands up to greet me as the kennel door opens, then allows petting along his head and body while leaning in and raising his tail. He's a bit tense and focused on the environment but he continues to enjoy petting for the remainder of the session. He begins to lick my hand and I give him some treats before ending the session. Licking can sometimes be a sign of affection, or can sometimes lead to nipping and biting in cats that become overstimulated. 9/3/21 Comes to the front excitably when approached. Rubs against his kennel as I open it. Accepts petting. Does seem to whip his head often but does not overstimulate. 9/5/21 Crouched in front of kennel upon approach, ears forward and face neutral. His pupils are dilated. He stands up to greet me as I open the kennel door, then allows petting along his head and back while leaning in and raising his tail. He remains very slightly tensed and watches my hand occasionally but does not escalate further. He appears to be a big, social and playful boy. 9/7/21 Pantha was sitting by his door, calm and curious as I approached. He gets up and comes forward to interact when unlocking his kennel. Accepts and leans in for all petting. Will become fixated on jumping out of kennel. 3/24/22 Returned I believe, but has no notes so it's unclear if there was a behavioral concern at this time. Pantha did well during his interaction and approached the kennel with his ears forward and eyes alert. He allowed petting with the scratcher tool while leaning in with enthusiastically and raising his tail. He ate all treats offered and played with the toys given. Pantha is a high energy cat who needs a lot of stimulation. An ACS reported that he was fine during cleaning but suddenly lunged at one point and this can be due to his high prey drive and need for space and play. Pantha may also have the potential to become overstimulated. GANN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Affectionate,Playful,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Very high energy level,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information. 2/25/26 It should be noted that since the beginning of February (this month) Pantha has been displaying a significant departure in his normal behaviors in shelter that seem to have stemmed from an incident during cleaning where a wasn't letting staff clean a specific side of his cage (unknown details as to how he was preventing) and the litter cubby was closed quickly and forcibly, with the potential for his tail to have been caught or to have startled him. Since this incident, Pantha has occilated between his normal friendly and social behavior to becoming reactive to staff passing by his cage or cleaning his cage. The day of the incident, he began to yowl and vocalize loudly and possibly lunge at the front of the cage afterwards and a cover was placed to attempt to settle him. These events lead up to the scratch incident that occurred in shelter on 2/17/26: An Animal Care staff member was cleaning Pantha's condo and when reaching in over his head to remove the food trays, Pantha reacted and scratched the ACS staff member on the right arm above the wrist drawing blood. The incident resulted in 2 to 3 scratches.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to his previous scratch/ bite incidents in his previous homes, as well as his potential for overstimulation, Pantha would do best in an adult-only home. He has previously lived with a dog/puppy and swatted at the other animal.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Pantha was at the front of his kennel rubbing against his door when approached. He leans in for petting through his kennel bars and purrs. When opening his door, he tenses up slightly and scopes out the room. He lip licks and he watches the cats and the focuses on the door. He would purr, lean in, knead and allow all petting on his head and body. His tail does sway, but shows no other signs of overstimulation or agitation. He would attempt to climb out twice and was easily lifted back in. When picked up, Pantha was calm. Patha displayed similar behaviors to his previous eval. He comes to the front of the kennel to greet the assessor. He leans in for gentle and rough petting, with his tail slightly swaying after a few minutes. He remains calm, allows pick up and is very gentle. 2/25/26 Upon meeting with Pantha, he is sitting in his bed towards the back of the cage with a neutral face and body, ears forward. He walks towards the front of the cage with his tail raised and sniffs the hand offered. He accepts and leans into all pets along his head and cheeks, as well as along his back without issue. He allows the assessor to lift him up and place him back down. The recent scratch incident in the shelter has occurred within a wider pattern of sudden behavior change.
