Animal Profile

Hero

Hello, my name is Hero. My animal id is #216204. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/8/2024.

Hero is at risk due due to behavior concerns. Hero is known to show high reactivity toward other dogs and difficulty managing arousal in high-stimulus environments. He frequently lunges, barks, jumps, and pulls hard on the leash when near other dogs or passing kennels, attempting to grab other dogs' paws. While attempts to redirect him with treats or training games are sometimes effective. On one occasion each time a dog passes, Hero lunges forward, jumping high into the air with enough force to fall onto his back. The handler shortens the lead, attempting to redirect him, but Hero head whips toward the handler before turning back to watch the other dog. Medically, Hero is underweight.

I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I am not one to sit still and will love interactive playtime in my new home! I am eager to learn and would love to keep learning cues and tricks with you! I am really treat motivated. You can use treats to teach me new things! A volunteer writes: Tall and handsome, sweet and social, fun and playful - there's so much to love about Hero! My favorite thing, though, is how he softly wiggles all 60-pounds of himself into my legs, happily lapping up all the pets and back-rubs and butt-scratches I shower on him. (He's been very social with other volunteers and staff, too). When I give him cheek-rubs, he's just as adorable - gently rolling his huge head around in my hands, making sure I get every last spot. Coming in as a stray, I'm not sure if Hero was taught any cues; but to my delight I find he knows "sit" and "shake/give paw" - smart boy! (He's also had great housebreaking habits at the shelter with regular walks). He also loves toys...often carrying his new plushy back to his bed and stretching out with it before getting down to the fun work of trying to pull it apart. Though Hero is very people-friendly, he hasn't shown the same love for dogs, so he should be the only pet in the home and avoid dog parks for now. This big, sweet pup is sure to charm you as he's done for so many of us!

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Mild Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: None Potential Challenges: Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Highly social Call over: Approaches with coaxing Sociability comments: Treat motivated, neutral body, engages with handlers, mouthy with moderate to hard pressure when given treats Handling Soft handling: Accepts contact Exuberant handling: Accepts contact Handling comments: Neutral body, allows petting, slight lip lick Arousal Jog: Follows loose Arousal comments: Knock: Approaches loose Knock comments: Toy: Ignores Toy comments:

Summary:: Due to Hero entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 01/03/25: When off leash at the Care Center Hero is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Hero approaches hard pulling and drooling. Hero displays prey bows after scenting the greeter female. Hero's flagging tail grows into a knot. Due to Hero's reactivity the interaction was ended and a face to face greet was not conducted.

Summary (5):: 01/24/25 (Trainer Note): Hero is sitting in kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He allows the handler to attach a drag leash. He engages readily in the various enrichment items, orienting between each though he is only able to pause and breathe intermittently between items. Handler gives him a toy and he begins to run around the room, throwing it and playing with it. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 01/23/25 (staff report): It is reported that while exiting the kennel room for his walk, Hero lunges toward another dog's feet that are sticking out from under the kennel door. Handler shortens their lead and Hero lunges again towards the other dog in kennel. Once out of the room, Hero pulls extremely hard and will lunge at other dogs as they pass on their walk. Hero is taken to a play yard and kept on slip lead. Each time a dog passes, Hero lunges forward, jumping up high in the air with enough force that he falls onto his back. Handler shortens their lead, attempting to redirect him, and he head whips toward handler before turning back to watch the other dog. Handler uses treats to redirect him but as soon as he eats the treats, he is hypervigilant again. Hero is ushered back into the building and returns to kennel safely. 1/13/25 (KSV): Hero was awake and sitting up when handler entered kennel room. He began wagging his tail with a wiggly frame as they approached. He appeared to have eaten his medication and most of his meal, and was up and moving around the kennel. Handler offered some cheese which Hero ate and began offering a sit for without being asked. Hero took treats quickly hand fed. After a short time Hero began coughing so handler left the room to let him rest. 1/4/25 (Trainer Note): Hero is laying down on his bed as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Hero allows the handler to attach a drag leash and explores the room with a soft body and wagging tail. He engages with the enrichment items independently, then engages with the handler in between items. Handler pulls him off to the side and conditions the marker, the 123 game, and Take a Breath. Hero responds well and participates readily. Handler then engages him back in the enrichment items and asks for orienting and breath in between items. Hero responds readily. He is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 1/3/25: Hero is lying down on his bed as handler approaches his kennel. He then approaches the door as the handler was unlocking it. He was able to be leashed and taken to the play yard for play group. He pulled hard on lead on the way there. He started to stand up on his hind legs and low bark at dogs we passed by. He pulled hard to greet the other dog in play group and would hard stare at the dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulled hard on the way back to his kennel, and hard barked at another dog outside. He was able to enter his kennel with no issues. 12/24/24 Hero is standing neutral at the front of his kennel whining as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls hard to go on a walk outside. Another handler is in front of Hero walking a dog and Hero pulls hard in their direction, barking high-pitched and whining. The handler turns Hero around to walk in the other direction, but Hero keeps looking back at the dog while whining. Once the other dog and handler are far enough away, the handler takes Hero in that direction, and he pulls hard while watching the other dog and whining. The handler uses a squeaker, successfully distracting Hero and getting his attention. When the other handler and dog are out of sight, Hero is able to walk a little slower and calmer. When crossing the street, Hero spots a non-shelter dog being walked and again tries to pull towards them while whining. The handler walks him away and gets his attention with treats before Hero offers a sit. The handler distracts redirects him with treats until the other dog is gone. On the way back to the shelter, Hero pulls hard and continues to display his dog reactivity anytime he spots another dog being walk, pulling hard towards them, whining and high-pitched barking. Hero is safely returned to his kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 12/17/24: Hero greets the handler standing at the front of her kennel door with a loose and wiggly frame. Hero is easily leashed and escorted to the play yards. Hero spends his time scenting and exploring the yard. Hero begins offering sits and staring at the handler. The handler begins rewarding Hero for sitting, looking at the handler and building duration. When the handler toss treats in the air Hero will immediately jump up and catch them in the air. Hero is food motivated and takes treats softy. Hero is escorted back to her pen where she is unleashed and secured without any issues. 12/15 (Rep Note): Hero was noted to be reactive towards dogs bill jumping and darting throughout the walk while whining. 12/9/24: Hero was standing the door to the front of his kennel as handlers approached. He was able to be leashed with ease and walked to the behavior room for his assessment. He was zig zagging his legs a lot on the way there. He was unsure of everything while in the room. He really loves treats/food and was searching everywhere to find some on the ground and from the handlers. Please see behavior assessment for more details. He pulled on the way back to his kennel, and walked in with no issues. AC 12/9/24 Hero is standing loose at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walked to the play yards. Hero pulls moderately in the halls and outside, panting heavily. In the yard, Hero greets other handlers with a loose and wiggly body, open mouth, and wagging tail. He takes treats from the handler and occasionally jumps on them with force to silicate attention. After play group, Hero is easily leashed and pulls walking back to his kennel. The handler calls his name to interrupt his pulling, and he responds by slowing down and making eye contact with the handler. He is safely returned to his kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- We recommend Hero is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home- We recommend Hero is the only pet in the home due to the dog reactivity he has shown in care. Recommend no dog parks- Due to Hero dog reactivity we recommend no dog parks

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/ Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Hero is a bit mouthy during his assessment. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Hero puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways. Low threshold for arousal/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Hero is reported to jump and dart towards dogs on the walk. Hero is reported to also begin to kennel fight and attempt to grab dogs feet.To address Hero's barrier frustration and low threshold for arousal, the training plan will focus on desensitization and positive reinforcement. Adopters should start by maintaining a safe distance from other dogs, rewarding Hero with treats and praise for calm behavior. Please see the handout on Low threshold for arousal/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
