Animal Profile

Darla Doll

Hello, my name is Darla Doll. My animal id is #216065. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/5/2024.

Darla Doll is on the at-risk due to behavior concerns. Darla Doll has been deteriorating in the care center despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Darla Doll has began to leash bite intensely, not being able to be refocused with treats or toys and has leash bit with a staff member resulting in the leash to be almost chewed through. Darla is social with staff but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Darla Doll is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. A volunteer writes: I remember my first time seeing Darla Doll because this is not a face you easily forget. She sat in a pop up crate in our overflow room and a staff member walked by singing her praises. Because she was brand new, we didn't get to take her out that day, and all week I looked forward to meeting her for real the next weekend. Darla must have known my expectations were high, because this girl put on a SHOW for us. Army crawling on the sidewalk as we dressed her in a little Hannukah themed sweater, then sticking that cute butt in the air for scritches. She propped her squat little body on my lap, and played with her stuffed bone. Darla was found by NYPD and reported by them to be very fearful. Though social at the shelter, she is looking for an experienced home to give her butt scritches and manage any fear she may have. Darla Doll is at Queens ACC.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: The NYPD reported that Darla Doll was being 'aggressive' when being removed from the home, but did not go into detail on what behavior she was displaying. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Darla Doll would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Darla Doll is a bit anxious in her crate. We recommend long walks and puzzle toys to help alleviate his anxiety. See handout on Generalized Anxiety. Leash-biting- Darla Doll is reported to leash bite while in the playyard.
