At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Brooklyn

Brooklyn has been placed on the at-risk list due to ongoing behavioral concerns. She is not thriving in the care center environment and continues to exhibit distance-increasing behaviors. When staff enter the room, she begins hissing and persists until they exit. During direct interactions, she may hiss, swat, lunge, and spit. These behaviors have begun to cause stress among the other cats in the room. Given her elevated stress levels, it is in her best interest to transition from the kennel environment into a stable home setting. Brooklyn would do best with adopters who have experience helping fearful cats adjust and who are willing to provide her with the time and space she needs to feel secure. Medically, Brooklyn is overweight and has early-stage periodontitis but is otherwise in apparent good health.

Molly

Molly is at-risk due to behavioral concerns. Molly is not adjusting well to the care center environment. Molly is noted to frequently screeches, paces, jumps on kennel doors, pushes tray doors open, and pulls or destroys water bowls and buckets. Molly shows reactivity toward dogs passing her kennel, including vocalizing, pawing through barriers, fixating, and pulling hard toward neighboring kennels when removed. In a more calm setting, she is noted to have a loose and wiggly body as she runs around with heavy panting. She would jump on the handlers for treats and toys. Medically Molly has allergies(undetermined), alopecia, and dermatitis - unspecified.

Nizmo

Nizmo is at risk due to behavior concerns. He consistently exhibits distance-increasing behaviors, such as growling, hissing, and swatting, when approached, and his threshold for escalation has decreased over time. He has remained in his den during his stay and does not come out when staff are present. It is in his best interest to move him out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. Nizmo would do best with an experienced adopter who is familiar with fearful cats and will give him the time and space needed to decompress and transition to a stable home environment. Medically, he appears healthy.

Seven

Seven is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Seven arrived as an owner surrender due to housing instability. Seven's previous owner notes he is friendly and outgoing. Upon arrival Seven was noted to be social with staff, he was soft bodied and allowed all tasks for a medical exam. During his handling assessment Seven was again noted to be highly social, approaching handlers, and allow all contact. Seven has been leash biting consistently since the beginning of his stay and has recently been noted to be anxious on walks. Seven has also been noted to be anxious during walks. Staff have also reported Seven has begun to frequently circle around handlers during walks both inside the building and when out on sidewalk. When being returned to kennel, Seven has been consistently grabbing hold and pulling his leash into kennel, he was able redirected with high value treats only. Due to increased intensity for safety concerns we are limiting handling. Medically, Seven is noted to have a fractured tooth, dental disease, and is on treatment for CIRDC.

Constantine

Constantine is on the at-risk list due to behavior.He is a potentially under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful cat adjust to strangers and new environments.

Taino

Taino is at risk for behavior reasons. In Taino's previous home, he had gotten loose and approached a stranger dog biting the dog quickly resulting in no broken skin. Owner reports Taino is friendly and outgoing with strangers, children, and will growl/bark at dogs. In the care center, Taino has been friendly and playful with staff and volunteers. He is reactive to other dogs and has displayed a low threshold for arousal. Interactive toys that make noise, shake, and/or move are very difficult to remove from him. With his kennel reactivity he had an incident were he redirected on the handler and snapped towards their hand while being walked past the kennels. Medically, he has dental disease but is otherwise healthy.

Kelpie

Kelpie is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Kelpie has been observed to lunge and vocalize towards other dogs in the kennel room. She was also observed to lunge and vocalize towards other people while on the street, however has been noted to become more social with time. Recently Kelpie has been consistently biting the leash when handlers are attempting to remove her from kennel but is redirectable with high value treats. When out with staff, Kelpie is highly social, allows all contact with loose body, and is treat motivated. Medically, Kelpie is apparently healthy.

Pointer

Pointer is at risk due to behavioral reasons. In the home Pointer scratched the resident child on the eyelid while jumping up on them. While in care Pointer has also been observed to jump up on handlers persistently and at times mouth them with hard pressure. Pointer is also observed to be reluctant to walk while on leash. With staff Pointer has been highly social, allows all contact with a loose body, and is highly treat motivated. Medically, Pointer is apparently healthy.

Diamond Princess

Diamond Princess is at risk due to behavioral and medical concerns. Diamond Princess arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender after an attempted bite incident in the home. Diamond Princess's previous owner reported that when Diamond Princess was laying down, a person was attempting to step around her and suddenly attempted to bite her. No contact was made. No other bites or attempted bites were reported. During her stay, Diamond Princess is easily handled by staff. She has been reported to be social with staff, treat receptive, and allows contact. Medically, Diamond Princess has mammary tumors that should be removed and biopsied, and she has a chronic upper respiratory issue that has not responded to antibiotic therapy. Moreover, she has chronic ear issues that have made her ear canals very narrow. This condition may difficult to treat medically and may require surgical intervention.

Baloo

Baloo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. His previous owner states that Baloo has a multiple bite history. Baloo has bitten dogs twice, and has redirected onto their previous owner twice. When he first arrived, Baloo was observed to be tense and fearful. With time and a slow approach, Baloo more readily approaches staff, walks well on leash, and is treat receptive. Their previous owner also states that Baloo will lunge towards strangers and dogs; but is also social and affectionate with familiar people. Medically, Baloo is apparently healthy.

Vulcan

Vulcan is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Vulcan arrived at the Care Center as a stray. It was reported that Vulcan needed to be control poled into a crate from transport due to growling at officers when approached. During a handling assessment Vulcan was reported to be fearful during contact; becoming tense and whale eyed. She has also been reported to be fearful during walks when loud noises are heard. Vulcan has also been observed to be kennel and on-leash reactive; turning toward kennels, fixating, and pulling toward dogs she sees when on-leash. With select staff, Vulcan has been social, solicited contact, and is treat receptive. Medically, Vulcan is noted to have Dermatitis (unspecified) and Otitis Externa.

Papo Korn

Papo Korn is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During his stay in the care center Papo has been observed to be fearful and defensive. Noted to snap at the muzzle during his medical exam. During his first handling assessment, Papo Korn was also very defensive when handlers attempted to place a collar on him. With time, Papo Korn has warmed up to handlers and showed significant improvement in handling and sociability during his most recent assessment. Papo Korn is also highly treat motivated. Medically, Papo Korn has a heart murmur, otitis externa, periodontal disease and is currently on treatment for CIRDC.

Betty Boy

Betty Boy is at risk due to behavioral concerns in the care center environment. Betty Boy exhibits high arousal and reactivity, particularly when leaving his kennel and will begin to kennel fight/ pull towards other dogs hard barking and lunging. He is noted to leash bite when coming out of kennel. In calmer settling Betty Boy displays a loose body and socializes with handlers, leaning into contact. During training sessions, he is able to work on the 123 game and take a breath. Medically Betty Boy has some lameness in his left hind and Otitis Externa.

Fox

Fox is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Fox displays high fear and avoidance of handling, avoids leashing, seeks distance from handlers, and shows whale eye and tension when approached, and was not able to complete a full handling assessment. He also seeks exits and jumps off kennel walls during his time in the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Fox will greet some handlers at times with a loose/wiggly body. Medically, Fox is apparently healthy.

Hockey

Hockey is at risk due to behavioral reasons. His previous owner states that he will bark and growl when startled. In his previous home he bit someone when they attempted to put a leash on him. Hockey's teeth grazed their hand, causing broken skin. While in care Hockey has been observed to be selectively dog reactive. During one instance Hockey was pushing off the wall attempting to get closer to the other dogs in the kennel room. With handlers Hockey has been observed to have a soft body while being pet, and is treat receptive. Medically, Hockey is healthy.

Honeycomb

Honeycomb is on the at risk list for medical reasons. Honeycomb is a sweet dog who has had intermittent to persistent diarrhea in shelter. He has continued to test positive for giardia despite multiple treatments. His diarrhea has not been responsive to treatments available in shelter. He is becoming more stressed in kennel and continues to reinfect himself by smearing feces. Behaviorally, Honeycomb has allowed all medical handling.

Stella

Stella is at risk due to behavioral concerns in the care center environment. Stella displays reactivity. She is reported to lunge toward bicyclist, hard stare and pull toward dogs, kennel fight when exiting and re-entering rooms, and vocalize while pulling with a tense body. Stella will engage during training sessions and will lean into contact with a loose body with a familiar handler. Medically Stella has Otitis Externa, pyoderma, and is overweight.

Taffy

Taffy is at risk due to behavioral concerns in the care center environment. Taffy has shown history of growling, snapping, and lunging in the kennel, particularly during leashing attempts, handler changes, and when items in her space are moved or removed. She has shown concerning behavior around resources in the kennel, including lunging when a food tray or bedding was moved around, and has fixated while low growling. In a more calm setting, Taffy will seek attetion from familiar handlers and will lean into petting with a soft body wanting continuous touch. Medically, Taffy is Apparently Healthy.

Juno is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Juno has one bite in her history towards another dog. This bite was a bite and hold; the victim needed to get stitches and vet care. It is also reported that Juno will hard bark and growl at strangers, cats, and dogs while on leash. While in care Juno has been observed to be anxious. Noted to pant and pace around the room while handlers attempt to interact. In her previous home, Juno is reported to love car rides, affectionate, and protective of the family. Medically, Juno has dental disease but is otherwise healthy.

Benny is at risk due to behavioral concerns in the care center environment. Benny frequently jumps, vocalizes, fixates on other dogs and his reflection on the kennel door, and lunges toward perceived triggers, often becoming difficult to redirect. He is noted grab at handlers treat pouch, requiring multiple handlers to double-leash. In a calmer setting, he will engage with enrichment items such as a snuffle mat full of treats and a cheese lick mat. He would approach the handler with a loose and wiggly body. Medically, Benny has mild anemia, a cruciate ligament rupture, dermatitis, and some lameness in his hind limbs.
