Coco Melon
Hello, my name is Coco Melon. My animal id is #219061. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/21/2025.
Coco Melon is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Coco Melon has been observed to be hypersalivating, and spinning both in and out of kennel. She is noted to be highly dog reactive, she very intensely cage fights, spins excessively, and she attempts to reach the other dogs upon seeing them. Even while cage fighting she will spin at random intervals, as well as on his walks. Coco Melon was also observed attempting to nip a medical staff ankles as she was spinning. She has tolerated handling in the care centers and will occasionally respond to squeaker toys. Medically, Coco Melon has Hematuria.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am.

Summary:: 1/28/25: Coco Melon is spinning while barking when attempting to greet another dog at the gate.
Summary (6):: 1/28/25: Coco Melon is spinning in kennel when the handler approaches. Coco is not receptive to treats and continues to spin and bark as the handler attempts to leash them. Handler has difficulty lassoing Coco due to the spinning. Once Coco is out of kennel she begins pulling towards the other dogs while barking and spinning. Coco is taken to the yard for a dog dog interaction. When seeing other dog on leash Coco will fixate on them and pull towards them. This behavior is not easily redirectable. When returning to kennel Coco spins quickly, making it difficult to walk her on a clipped leash. When in kennel Coco continues to bark and spin and both directions. 1/25/24: Coco Melon is spinning and barking in her kennel upon handlers approach. She is offered treats - which she will sniff at but continue to spin in kennel. Treats are tossed, which disrupt the spinning momentarily - but Coco Melon continues spinning, occasionally backing up or moving forward in kennel. She is eventually leashed and brought out of her kennel. She immediately attempts to cage fight with neighboring dogs, all while still spinning at random intervals. Once outside the kennel room - she relieves herself on the floor - and continues walking (spinning intermittently throughout). She is brought into the interaction room at PAC where she meets a MOP who offers her deli meat. She initially sniffs and eats the deli meat slowly - eventually becoming more and more excited - wagging her tail and limiting her spinning - although she does continue to spin throughout the interaction. She is offered some other treats as well - which she takes gently from MOP. MOP attempts to pet her briefly - but she backs away and spins multiple times - MOP does not attempt petting again. She is eventually brought back into her kennel (she continues to spin while walking into the kennel room and attempts to cage fight with neighboring dogs). She needs to be slightly muscled into kennel. Once in her kennel, she continues to spin and bark. Interaction is ended.
Summary (7):: 1/24/25: Staff report that Coco Melon is highly dog reactive. When walking past other dogs, coco Melon spins continuously and attempts to get to the other dogs. 1/23/25: Coco Melon is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered treats and initially sniffs them but does not accept them. She is difficult to leash due to her continued spinning and backing away when attempting to leash. After multiple attempts she is leashed and taken to the street for her walk, when exiting kennel however she fixates very quickly on the dogs she passes and will pull towards them even after exiting the room. She spins constantly during her walk and does not stop at any point. She frequently runs into handlers legs when spinning and will lightly thrash attempting to spin when walking forward. She is brought back inside for an assessment, during which she continues spinning constantly, but tolerates collaring and petting. She spots a dog when heading back to kennel at the other end of the hallway and pulls towards them while vocalizing at them. She is quickly returned to kennel and interaction is ended. 1/22/25: Coco Melon was observed to be hypersalivating and spinning in kennel. 1/21/25 (LATE ENTRY): Coco Melon is observed to be attempting to nip at vet services staff members pants.

Summary:: Panting and tense, constantly spinning in circles
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Coco Melon so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/22/25: Coco Melon was observed to be hypersalivating and spinning in kennel.Spins in both directions and when distracted with squeaky toy will stop spinning
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to anxiety and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Coco Melon has been observed to persistently spin in kennel and out of kennel. We have no history on their behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Coco has been observed to fixate on other dogs, vocalize and pull towards them with a tense body. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Coco will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
