Animal Profile

Yogurt

Hello, my name is Yogurt . My animal id is #216264. I am a male tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/8/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- hoarding situation.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Yogurt is on the at-risk list due to behavior and medical concerns. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, he has a URI and is not eating.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. A volunteer writes: Yogurt is very admirably trying his best, but the shelter is big and waiting for your forever family isn't always easy. After a bright and hopeful start, he has seemed to resign himself to his cozy den having decided that maybe doesn't need to share all of his lovely headbutts and nuzzles after all. Yogurt tried really hard to keep an open mind about the Care Center when he first came in, but, as many of us know, it can be wearing to keep putting yourself out there. He came to us from a home with many other cats and though Yogurt initially felt a little worried about all the big sounds and movements in Adoptions, he'd come out from the safety of his den for pets when it was quiet. When we visit dear Yogurt now, he declares that he doesn't want pets or any visitors at all. We know there's a very special kitty inside who is just hoping to meet the right family.

He hissed and lip licked when I bent down and looked in his kennel. As I slipped a tray with squeeze-up through the kennel, he hissed again and spat. 12/17/24 FB26 Hissing by the front and lunges when spoken softly to. After he slowly walks off and hops onto the den watching from a distance with an intense stare. Left alone to reduce stress. 12/23/24 FB47 Yogurt Was in the loaf position on top of the den, appeared subdued, eyes closing, but not appearing to be sleepy and maybe under the weather. Reported to medical.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Due to fearfulness, no young children under 13 years old.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 12/11/24: Upon approach Yogurt was crouched in his den with wide eyes and whiskers pressed against his face. He scooted towards the back of his den after scanning the room for an exit, then licked his lips. Although he sniffed treats, he was too fearful of the noises and movements in the room to be coaxed out. Once contact was made, he head-bunted the assessor's hand, leaned into cheek rubs and raised his hips during back strokes. When the room was still, he ventured out of his den and body leaned against the assessor purring. He was tense during pick up, but remained calm when held for about 30 seconds. 12/15/24: In the past few days from his initial evaluation, Yogurt suddenly declined in behavior. Yogurt was crouched down hiding in his den with his head and ears forward, focused on the assessor through the front door of the den with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. He lunges forward, striking the den door, hisses, and begins growling. When spoken to and opening the door, he steps back and wraps his tail tight around his body. He sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool and is frozen and continues growling when petting his head, cheeks, and body. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. When placing the den cover at the end of the interaction, he lunges and swats at the den front door again. Yogurt is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not appreciate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
