Yogi
Hello, my name is Yogi. My animal id is #85701. I am a desexed male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/8/2020.
Yogi is at risk for behavioral reasons. Yogi has deteriorated during his stay in the care center and has displayed a low threshold for arousal and is easily overstimulated. Yogi would be best suited for placement with an experienced adopter that can provide reward based training. Medically, Yogi seems healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...
A volunteer writes: Yogi looks like a choir boy in his kennel, so calm and well mannered, his beautiful and unique eyes gazing gently at me. Take him out to the ballgame is what Yogi has in mind! He is quite a player! He runs, jumps after the tennis balls, teases them between his paws and performs head shots. He is a young man, very puppy like who gets excited easily and needs, like a kid, to be taught limits-setting. Yogi is really eager to please, though, loves treats, caresses, sits readily on command and shows his good will by displaying the most winning smile and an ever wagging tail. Yogi is so willing to learn all that is needed to make a perfect pet and is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center for his new owner and teacher. Come and meet very soon this amazing pup!

Date of intake:: 1/8/2020
Summary:: Mounting counselor but easily re directed
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Yogi so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. At the care center, he displays a high level of energy. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 2/2/20: Wile Yogi remains social with handlers at the care center, his behavior has deteriorated over the course of his stay. He now intensely grabs the leash in his mouth when taken out. He can be refocused with treats, but as soon as he is done eating them he resumes jumping up and grabbing at the leash. He has also bark and whine when outside, displaying an increasing level of frustration.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children: At the care center, Yogi jumps up exuberantly on handlers, attempts to mount, and attempts to grab handlers' clothing in his mouth when aroused. We recommend an adult-only home. No dog parks: Due to some observed lunging and barking toward select dogs, a dog park environment is not recommended.

If he displays this behavior in a new home, see handout on Leash Manners. Social hyperarousal: Yogi quickly becomes aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing handlers' hands and clothing, and mounting. See handout on Arousal.
